46 ratings | 2436 views
Silver Springs is very special to Sea Hunt fans as 100 underwater scenes were filmed in its clear warm waters. Alec explains the springs history and many changes from when Lloyd Bridges stood on this spot for this very famous photo. Many tourists visited Silver Springs March 4 & 5, 2017, to see vintage double hose divers in authentic period scuba gear, recreate underwater scenes for guests during glass bottom boat rides. ***** Alec Peirce Scuba ***** SCUBA TECH TIPS playlists ▶︎ Series 6: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QPUG1sUYHrO9eSKQ4XG7b0B ▶︎ Series 5: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QM1kJF6re614D95obxUJLTe ▶︎ Series 4: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QPZUeotCLbh0ic7ygFwRYcj ▶︎ Series 1, 2 & 3: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QPtP2-4sINDYMP8yNJkFgzc VINTAGE SCUBA playlists ▶︎ Series 3: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QM6MUtwcT3jMO2tRfjAPh2H ▶︎ Series 2: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QOgU748Ss3eYf7BX3M-UPfx ▶︎ Series 1: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QP3E8OVncZtnoSa8fuZN6LX SEA HUNT REMEMBERED playlists ▶︎ Series 2: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QMZrI4i-_16Zr1NkqoZx48b ▶︎ Series 1: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEmTMig18QO-MiB19Ctkfe1DB59w9dly ▶︎ SEA HUNT COLLECTOR website: http://seahuntcollector.com

I am 71 years old. I grew up in Jacksonville FL. My parents used to take me to Silver Springs to swim in their beach area. When I was a high school senior, they had to close the beach because of alligators encroaching into the beach area. I had an annual pass to Silver Springs up until I moved west to Utah. After 14 years in Mormon-land I returned to Silver Springs to find out that the only attraction still open was the Glass Bottom Boats. It's too bad that the other attractions fell by the wayside.

that's what happens when our government takes up all of our parks and makes it where you can't do anything on them. you can't even swim in Silver Springs anymore. you can't fish there. you can't really do anything there because of the government and how the state thinks they own everything. I hate our government they are garbage

@Alec Peirce Scuba I respect you for this comment.

Silver Springs park was no longer a viable attraction in private hands. With all of the big attractions in Florida now, few people stopped at Silver Springs even though it has been there almost 100 years. It was at one time THE thing to see in Florida. Now few people even know about it. Since it was not making a profit, there was no money to spend on improvement and certainly none for protecting the park environment. Almost all of the many reasons to visit Silver Springs were gone except for the Glass Bottom Boat Rides, and that really is not so exciting to travelers today. While I agree that too many areas are taken over by the state and often have restricted access, in this case we now have a State Park, protected for people to enjoy permanently. Scuba diving has been banned at Silver Springs for many years. It is partly a liability issue but also partly to protect the underwater environment. It is a small underwater area and just a few divers a day would definitely affect it badly. You can kayak or canoe in the springs to enjoy the water, wildlife and forest. There are about 250 springs in Florida and many of them are available to divers. Many in fact, cater almost exclusively to divers. And generally those are a better dive site than Silver Springs not to mention they have dive facilities. At my age, from a time when we could do what we wanted, when we wanted, anywhere we wanted, it's irritating to see so many restrictions and rules. I scuba dive, ride a motorcycle, an ATV, a snowmobile and I hunt. ALL of these hobbies are at the top of the list of restricted activities today so I agree with you. But, I have accepted that there are way too many people now to allow unfettered access to everything. It would simply be no fun and not safe. And I also know that many people have no respect for others much less the environment. Add the two together and you have a problem. It would be a nightmare if we simply said, "Go ahead. Everybody do what you want". I don't know the answer. Another planet maybe!! Maybe you have an idea. But for now the government, in its hamfisted way, is at least trying. Thanks for watching. Alec

Alec - You're probably the best man to help me out with this! Sea Hunt was years before my time, but as a child I used to love watching old episodes of it. The episode that used to really terrify me was the Legend Of The Mermaid. Do you have any idea where the cave in the episode is, or was? Was it somewhere in Silver Springs?
Downlink (2 years ago)
Wonderful. Thank you!
Alec Peirce Scuba (2 years ago)
That was definitely the cave at Silver Springs. If you've looked at the video about the recent Sea Hunt event we had there you will see that cave. The cave is really the hole from where the spring water flows into the bowl and then downriver. You'll also recognize the bottom of the bowl with Sea Grass and lots of floating bits of algae. It looks almost the same to day as it did when 'Mike' was there. Interestingly, this year, Silver Springs also had a mermaid event to recall the days when mermaids were part foi the show at the Springs. Thanks for watching. Alec
A really nice video
Never a problem I always enjoy watching your vids!

Alec, have a mask I would love for you to look at, from the 70-80 I think. Not sure but have images. Can I email them to you? What email should I send it too if you don't mind?

Wasn't the lovely Jan Harrison the girl in the trunk?
Alec Peirce Scuba (2 years ago)
Yep! That's her. Lloyd was a ladies man and many episodes featured pretty girls of the day. Most are forgotten today but I have pictures of many of them. Jan was a popular girl and was in several Sea Hunt episodes. How did you know her? Alec

On a side note Alec, please feel free to share more fun stuff about what instructors told us NOT to do https://youtu.be/X1JgKd38yG0
Alec Peirce Scuba (2 years ago)
I agree Tom. It has to be fun first or what's the point? Diana, my incredible wife, has dived all over the world - every continent, all the hot spots, 4 times to South Africa (she loves sharks!) and lots of cold water wrecks. However, I took her to good ol' Key Largo several years ago to enjoy the diving of my youth. I worked in Key Largo in the early 70's. I thought she'd be unimpressed but we had a great time just enjoying ourselves. On one dive at Molasses, we didn't go deeper than 20' and just nosed around for 1 hour and 54 minutes!! Sucked our tanks dry; no safety stop; just slow and lazy on a hot, sunny, calm day. The way scuba diving should be. We still talk about that dive. I'm sure not advocating ignoring safety rules but, on they shouldn't impede your enjoyment in circumstances that are 100% safe. Take care. Alec
Tom Knudsen (2 years ago)
Exactly my point Alec, both fun and also perhaps we can learn something. Does not always need to be totally relevant. It is truly enjoyable too. I know safety is numero uno, but I feel as many divers do they over do it some times. Tiny things here and there. I.e. safety stops, while its a good practices to do, people forget that it is not essential on a shallow dive. Also many divers I talked to are petrified if the i.e. acend through it on an empty tank because their to light. Actually seen people almost panic because they think the are getting the bends. So rather to not demote the safety, kinda be more fun to ease into it while de-mystify some of the "instructor" do's and dont's. For example, many dive watches say 5 meter at 3 minutes or 20 feet at 3/5. While others are more conservatory and say 10feet at 3 minutes. I know my istructor said 5 meter at 3 min. Anyway looking forwarf to any new video, small or large. Great work by you and Kevin, so thank you both.
Alec Peirce Scuba (2 years ago)
OK Tom. I can do that. It's hardly relevant now but I'll tell you that my own instructor, a big-bellied, brush-cut ex-Navy man, stood up in front of my class in 1962 and said, "Don't any of you guys buy one of those single hose regulators. They'll kill ya' " Of course times change. Sounds weird now but at the time (I was only 12 years old) I was scared of my scuba instructor. As it happens, after several years of diving with the club regulators, Aqua-Lung Mistral, with double yellow hoses, I bought my first reg. It was an Aqua-Lung Aquamatic single hose. It worked pretty good. I still have it! I'll work on something. Alec

Do you have a Voit Porta-Sub?
Alec Peirce Scuba (2 years ago)
I do but it's not in good shape. I'd like to get another one and build a nice working model. One of our Sea Hunt group has a good one that works well. He has at Silver Springs this year. They used a car battery and many divers didn't know enough to open it after every dive and rinse and dry it out so they usually got ruined in a very short time. Let me know if you find one. Alec

One of these days I will make it down there for The Sea Hunt Forever weekend. Maybe we can dive together. Keep up the great videos Alec. Montana Mike
Alec Peirce Scuba (2 years ago)
That would be really neat Mike. You must let me know if you're on a trip somewhere. Di and I go regularly to Florida and often to CA as well. It would be fun to meet. Take care. Alec
Miguel Gerov (2 years ago)
Alec, thanks for another great video. Sorry I missed seen you this year. Hopefully I will see you next year.
Alec Peirce Scuba (2 years ago)
Hope so. I hope there's an event next year. We've had them about every 2 years but I know some of there organizers are getting tired. It's a lot of work. Thanks again Miguel. Alec
