How to travel safely in Africa on a tight budget

50 ratings | 6868 views
David is a veteran traveler with more than 30 countries under his belt. In today's interview I asked him about how to travel safely on a budget (including hitch hiking) in sub-Saharan Africa. David shares his personal experience, observations, tips and tricks accrued over three years serving as a US Peace Corps Volunteer (his opinions here are his own and do NOT represent the Peace Corps). Learn more about David's time in Africa and follow his travels on his blog at http://davidberger.net or see his youtube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/user/Joakhan. This is part of a series of interviews I did with David tapping into his knowledge and expertise on travel, particularly within sub-Saharan Africa. Don't miss his amazing interview response on racism, and join in for a good chuckle while watching his interview about exotic African foods. I’ve been to Tanzania they have a huge thief and mugger and pickpocket problem there but I stayed safe by only going to designated hotels and areas and I didn’t go out at night unless I was with the group I went with ! Travel in groups My best advice is don’t be flashy or show off too much fancy jewelry and phones etc. hide your valuables and tech where people won’t think to look. Avoid the public transportation It is a-bit more spendy but a lot safer if I were you hire a private company or safari company to drive you around ! Don’t take any transportation at night if possible you don’t know if there are thieves around or on the bus waiting to rob you !
