You can support The Professor just by checking out their store through this link: http://www.cardkingdom.com/TCC Draft is quite possibly the most popular way to play Magic the Gathering. If you want to go down to your local store and play Friday Night Magic, it is highly likely that the format will be draft. In Draft, players draft cards and build a deck from those cards, that is, you pick one card from a booster pack and then pass the rest of the pack to your neighbor. Your other neighbor does the same, passing you the rest of their pack. Ultimately, you and a your group of 8 players open and draft from 3 booster packs each, the end goal being the construction a 40 card deck. Since draft is so extremely popular, and also very lucrative, the current process of designing Magic The Gathering sets tends to create cards with draft as the priority of form and function. So what is draft and how does it work? If you are drafting at Friday Night Magic at your local game store, then you are very likely drafting from the most recent set. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the cards. Yes, there are a lot of them, and no, I am not suggesting that you memorize them, but it is a good idea to take a moment to at least read over the set list. Tolarian Community College do you have to buy the packs for fnm
Evan (1 year ago)
When we have open a booster, do we have to take the lands off the pack ?
Davide Ranieri (1 year ago)
Δημητρης Βαγκοπουλος How much can you spend? Try and go on a mono colored deck since those don't need the infamously expensive fetchlands and shocklands, which are usually a lot of the price of a deck. I've been able to build a competitive UTron for about 250$. If you like control and can get to this price, I'd strongly recommend it.

My first draft was horrible I didn't like it, I didn't know I was going to give my cards( my money) to a random person. Never doing drafts I don't mind if its a friend next to me though. I would not mind

3:43 - Red text - What does he mean players should not pass land and token cards? So when you open a booster pack all lands and tokens stay with you, you choose a card, and then pass what’s left on to the next player?
Nicolas Tomaz (1 month ago)
Hey prof, I really like your videos, and as I had an atypical day where I had nothing to do at work, I just uploaded brazilian portuguese subtitles to this video. I'll try to do so for other ones as well, for I wish more of my brazilian friends could watch your videos.

Going to a website to read all the cards in a set rather than discovering them when you open the pack seems to me like the wrong way to live one's life.

Very informative for a beginner.

Helpful. I gave away all of my cards 10, years ago, after playing since 1993-1994. I had only ever played casually with friends, so I'm trying to learn about different game formats before starting to play again.

Not trying to be a negative nacy but I think as foretold doesn't belong in the dirt category. I believe I belongs in the bomb category. It allows you to cast a spell with converted Mana cost equal to the number of time counters on it. Once per turn. And that's each players turn. Escpially helpful in playing emperor. And if playing a blue control deck or even a blue red control burn.
Jay Sillynx (3 months ago)
mick mages I believe this is more in the context of Sealed/Draft. As Foretold is a cool card and there's decks built around it, however it is most likely not helping you a lot if you run it as a one-of in a draft deck.
Jack Bissell (4 months ago)
This helped me, Thanks Prof!

Solid video. Good for players like me that are new to draft.
Mr Ginger (4 months ago)
Another good strategy for the dirt part of the draft might be a counter pick, example, pulling a card that disrupts or destroys artifacts if you will be heavily using artifacts and etc.. denial of advantage against you kind of thing

"you must then construct a deck of 40 cards including basic lands" "basic lands are not passed" so how the hell are you meant to get basic lands in your deck if they arent passed?!
Michael Vincent Cubillas (5 months ago)
Create a deck with creatures and spell then ask your lgs for lands depending on what mana color your creatures and spells :)

Thank you for this advice! I ended up 3rd on my first dominaria draft! Where the rares get picked by the end of the game as price. I ended up taking Teferi, Hero of Dominaria (I'm on third place) because Karn (for 1st place), Lawbringer (second place) are all the expensive rares in this draft. Thanks TCC for giving us new players very good advice, keep doing what you're good at!

Is anyone here for the upcoming magic 25 packs
FlawlessRhythm (9 months ago)
Did you seriously say As Foretold is dirt??? If you're drafting blue removal, As Foretold is the most powerful card in that set for it. Especially not being at legendary. The odds are miniscule that you'll get to draft two but I've been in a MM draft where a girl picked 2 goyfs. The first pack it was the rare, her third pack it was the foil. Still though, As Foretold is a draft bomb. Playing creatures/instant removal for free...
edgardo ayala (8 months ago)
FlawlessRythym i know that this isnt a question that is about what you said but... When i draft a deck i can keep the deck for me? Like , i own the deck

As foretold is really good, and I would consider it the sixth catagory of just really good or useful, such as planewalkers. Just because it isn’t a BREAD card doesn’t mean it isn’t incredibly over powered.

Cyber Rittengrem (1 year ago)
Do you keep the draft cards?
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
Yes. In any doubt, ask the store beforehand.
Pugdroid (1 year ago)
so you bring your own land??
Pugdroid (1 year ago)
do I take my drafted deck home after I draft??? Please help I am a complete noob
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
Yes, you could. But then, what would be the point of drafting? You already paid for the event (for a price that you might as well used to buy your own boosters packs). Besides, the most valuable cards are usually good, so you can use them to build your deck. But it also means that you'll probably won't get too many valuable cards from the other players (they'll use them for their deck). Finally, at the end of drafting, you get to keep 45 cards (plus any drafted basic lands and tokens). An 8 people draft has 24 rares, so even if you get all the rares, you still have to choose 21 non-rare cards to help you to create your deck (a competent draft deck is usually made out of 24 cards + 16 basic lands).
Pugdroid (1 year ago)
wait couldnt you just take the most valuable cards form the packs and not even care about winning the draft??
Pugdroid (1 year ago)
ok thanks
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
In any doubt, ask the store beforehand.
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
Yes, you do. About the lands, either bring yours or ask the store to borrow some lands for the event (in the worst case, buying your own pack of basic lands costs about $1 or $2)
Jonguar (1 year ago)
Are crabs a good example of dirt? They are usually overpriced (manawise) for their power and toughness, and don't usually have any abilities.
liam Wright (1 year ago)
What, Haze of Pollen can't be removal? Lose no creature, tap all theirs, waste their combat and leave them open...
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
It still is pretty lackluster as removal. Avoiding combat damage one turn usually doesn't remove a bomb, the card doesn't tap creatures by itself, and it doesn't stop creatures from untapping on your opponent's next turn.
liam Wright (1 year ago)
CaitSeth true, but that's why I like to keep it. Low cost protection if you need it, get rid of it and find something better if you don't.
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
OK, I tried Haze of Pollen in a draft last FNM (mainly because I messed up my draft). Unless you have a bomb ready for next turn or you need to protect your bomb from combat damage, you'll be delaying the inevitable. It has better use as a fuel for creatures that get bonuses for cycling cards (but there are better cards with the same cycling cost).
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
After their attack phase, they still can summon more creatures. Good players usually don't tap all their creatures when they see that their opponent can attack the next turn, unless they have other means of defense (like more creatures). Haze of Pollen is highly situational and it doesn't guarantee it would even turn the tide in your favor.
Flames Gaming (1 year ago)
little confused , when you have a pack , you take a land and token and keep that and choose 1 card among rest of the cards and then you pass the other cards ? is it the true way ? or something else

TheRealSpellstar (1 year ago)
how is embalmer's tools a dirt card if you're playing embalm?
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
It's neither a bomb, evasion or aggro; and pretty ineffective as potential removal (if your opponent is playing embalm too, the card's second ability does the opposite of removal while leaving you open too). At best it goes on the sideboard.
Dizazel (1 year ago)
as foretold wouldnt be dirt, it lets you pay for anything with three mana turn after turn, it just requires the game to go on
CaitSeith (1 year ago)
You won't be able to do that until your 6th turn at best (and that's if you are lucky enough to play the artifact in your 3rd one) . By that time, you pretty much have your hand empty. It's better to have something that gives you free mana, because As Foretold can't be used for abilities that require mana (and lots of cards can use abilities with mana cost while being in the battlefield or even the graveyard).
Evan (1 year ago)
When we have open a booster, do we have to take the lands off the pack ?
yes, you keep the basic land and token cards for yourself.
Los Jukes (1 year ago)
As foretold is actually a pretty good card imo
