It’s not the rural markets, but us who are sleeping – Adi Godrej Why Rural has become all important: India’s rural population of 742 million is larger than the total population of the US and the European Union put together. The popular notion that ‘Rural’ means only ‘agriculture’ no longer holds true. Though around 70% of India is still ‘rural’, bullock carts have given way to tractors and harvesters, mud huts have converted to concrete houses and 75% of the new factories in the last decade have come up in rural areas/small towns. The urban push to rural India has spurred the shift in employment pattern from agriculture to the more organized manufacturing or trading sector. The contribution of agriculture to rural GDP has fallen from about half, a decade back, to only one-fourth now. Infrastructure development has, on the one hand, led to better access to rural produce and on the other enabled transfer of urban best practices to rural areas. The key drivers can be identified as rapid strides in the rural roads programme, cell phone penetration and rural electrification. For India Inc, wealth lies in the hinterland. The previous decade saw one of the largest "Bharat" reach-out plans by FMCG companies, this decade it will be the turn of all such Companies/entities with a consumer interface — be it automobile makers, telecom firms, healthcare service providers or banking and finance companies. Rural India accounts for around 50 per cent of India’s gross domestic product (GDP) and houses nearly 70% of the country’s population. Rural market throws up opportunities as a result of a unique combination of growing incomes and rising aspirations of around 850 million consumers living in 6,50,000 villages of India. Some hard facts which reiterate our conviction about the potential of rural India are - Hindustan Unilever (HUL) is generating 40% of its total business from rural markets, Maruti’s rural contribution stands at 31% which was 8-9% five years back. And Coca-Cola gets around 30% of their turnover from the countryside. 70% of DTH subscribers are from villages and small towns in India. Surprisingly, only 2-3% of DTH subscribes come from major metros like Delhi and Mumbai. The mobile penetration in rural India at the end of 2013 stands at 41%. The glitter and glamour of cities have always been an allurement for rural youth. Non availability of opportunities in the rural areas coupled with lack of urban amenities like transport, communication connectivity, entertainment opportunities, consumer goods etc. have pushed migration to the cities causing severe ecological imbalances. Governance is an issue all across India, and rural India is no exception. Issues like women empowerment, child labor, religious intolerance, caste politics etc are adding to the challenges of rural areas. Many non-profit organizations and corporate have pitched in and partnered with the government to alleviate the situation. Lot needs to be done before we can see visible and significant change. Most Indian and MNC businesses have traditionally focused on servicing the big cities, with their higher concentration of affluent people. The cost to reach the 5100 towns and over 6 lac villages is prohibitive. Therefore it is important to understand how best to segment it, define ‘My Target Rural India’ and shape businesses for it. More so at a time when government is stepping aside, in favor of more efficient private players and when Internet and mobile phones now available, make hitherto unviable markets become very viable indeed. Any macro-level strategy for these markets should focus on availability, accessibility and affordability. Focused attention needs to be paid to market research that goes on to reduce the uncertainly in dealing with these markets. More specifically, in relation to rural areas, demand is seen to a very highly price elastic. Net profit of India’s largest fast-moving consumer goods manufacturer rose 19.2 percent from the year-ago period to Rs 1,529 crore, according to the company’s exchange filing. That’s in line with the Rs 1,540 crore estimated by analysts tracked by Bloomberg. Revenue rose 11 percent to Rs 9,487 crore, missing the estimated Rs 9,669 crore. Sales volumes rose 12 percent year-on-year, also in line with estimates. This was the third consecutive quarter of double-digit sales growth for HUL, which owns popular brands such as Ponds, Surf XL, Kwality Wall’s, Vaseline, Lux, Lakme, CloseUp, etc. The company expects a gradual improvement in demand and said it will continue to focus on innovations and market development. “Crude volatility and currency-led inflation are key risks going ahead,” Sanjiv Mehta, chairman and managing director at HUL, was quoted as saying in the press release accompanying the earnings filing. On the operational front, HUL’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation rose 21 percent to Rs 2,251 crore while the operating margin expanded to 23.7 percent from 21.9 percent last year. Homecare revenue rose 3 percent year-on-year to Rs 3,146 crore Double-digit sales volume growth seen in homecare segment led by key brands such as Vim, Wheel and Surf Beauty and personal care revenue up 1 percent to Rs 4,407 crore. Sales in this segment also grew in double digits led by skin care, hair care and cosmetics Food revenue up 8 percent to Rs 1,785 crore. The quarter also saw the integration of HUL’s food and refreshment divisions.
