Liberia Tourism, West Africa - Unravel Travel TV

02:40
Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Cote d'Ivoire to its east. It covers an area of 111,369 km sq and is home to about 3.7 million people. Liberia is a country with historical ties to the United States. It was founded by freed black slaves during the pre-Civil War antebellum era of the nineteenth century. The capital, Monrovia, was named after James Monroe. Liberia's flag closely resembles the American flag, reflecting the historical ties of Liberia to the United States. History Anthropological research shows the region of Liberia was inhabited at least as far back as the 12th century, perhaps earlier. Between 1461 and the late 17th century, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders had contacts and trading posts in Liberia. The Portuguese had named the area Costa da Pimenta, later translated as Grain Coast, because of the abundance of grains of melegueta pepper. In 1822, the American Colonization Society which was the primary vehicle for returning black Americans to greater freedom in Africa established Liberia as a place to send people who were formerly enslaved. This movement of black people by the A.C.S. had broad support nationwide among white people in America. While the institution of slavery in America grew, reaching almost four million slaves by the mid-1800s, a growing population in the U.S. chose to emigrate to Liberia as well. African-Americans gradually migrated to the colony and became known as Americo-Liberians, from whom many present day Liberians trace their ancestry. On July 26, 1847, Americo-Liberian settlers declared independence for the Republic of Liberia. Liberia retained its independence during the Scramble for Africa but lost its claim to extensive territories that were annexed by Britain and France. Economic development was hindered by the decline of markets for Liberian goods in the late 19th century and by indebtedness on a series of loans, payments on which drained the economy. On April 12, 1980, a successful military coup was staged by a group of noncommissioned army officers led by Master Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe. The soldiers were a mixture of the various ethnic groups that claimed marginalization at the hands of the minority Americo-Liberian settlers. In late 1989, the First Liberian Civil War began and the country was in a state of war to varying degrees until 2003. Liberia is recovering from a devastating civil war that ended with a ceasefire in August 2003. While the country is now on the mend, it has not yet redeveloped the necessary infrastructure to sustain a large increase in tourism, with little for the average visitor outside Monrovia. Towns like Buchanan, Ganta etc are little more than a collection of shanty houses with no decent hotels or food. Monrovia, in general, is calmer than the more far-flung areas although the situation countrywide is improving with the presence of UN Peacekeepers. Fear should not stop you enjoying your visit but act with caution. Travel outside Monrovia is very difficult and not advisable on your own. Climate The equatorial climate is hot year-round with heavy rainfall from May to October with a short interlude in mid-July to August. During the winter months of November to March dry dust-laden harmattan winds blow inland causing many problems for residents. VICE correspondent Jordan Redaelli travels to Freetown, Sierra Leone, to learn about an indigenous drink called poyo. Poyo is said to hold mystical properties, bestowing money, power and fierce erections to those who drink it. Later, he hits the beach to mix up a poyo-infused cocktail. Overlanding West Africa: Aminah Boarding Ferry In Guinea

00:41
As we journeyed from Guinea Bissau to Sierra Leone we spent nearly 10 days traversing the Guinean Highlands, a beautiful mountainous region known as the Fouta Djalon. In wet season some of the roads can be very tricky. Along this stretch you have to use this rickety old ferry. The crew use a ratchet and winch system to pull the ferry over the river, great fun! (This video was taken by a passenger on our Dakar to Freetown trip called Will Betts, UK)

Overlanding West Africa: Trek To A Vine Bridge In Guinea

00:36
This video shows a vine bridge we visit in Guinea's Forest region. It's a beautiful trek, involving one hour of hiking through thick forest. This particular bridge is still used to this day by the locals for transporting produce through the forest. It is one of the very few examples left of the incredibly engineered "pont de llanas's" as most have fallen into disrepair. With all the new roads being built in the region the locals no longer rely upon the bridges for getting around the region. Jamie Noel, who made this video, is a professional film maker and was a passenger on our Accra, Ghana to Freetown, Sierra Leone trip in January 2013. Visit www.overlandingwestafrica.com/accratofreetown for more information and details of this particular trip we run through West Africa: Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Ghana For more on Jamies work, visit his Vimeo channel here: www.vimeo.com/afearofbuttons
Baboon Wars | South Africa

Broadcast: 6 February 2011 on Sunday Night, Seven Network, Australia. Tim travels to Cape Town in South Africa to cover a neighbourhood dispute of a different kind. On one side, the baboon residents who have been there for a million years ... on the other, their human neighbours who are moving in. It all started when people began building on prime land belonging to the local baboons and naturally the primates took it very personally responding with a crime wave of carjackings, muggings and home invasions. This is the real-life version of planet of the apes! Botswana Vacation Travel Video Guide

51:35
Travel video about destination Botswana. Botswana is the largest natural paradise in southern Africa. Limited tourism, a combination of untouched wilderness and the comfort and luxury of a handful of safari camps, makes this Africa’s model country. Our journey begins in nearby Zimbabwe that is located close to Botswana’s northern frontier at Victoria Falls that is undoubtedly one of the most impressive natural wonders in the world. Eighty kilometres west and we have crossed the Botswana border and arrive in the first large city in the north of the country, Kasane, that is located on the Chobe River and marks the country’s frontier with Namibia. In addition to growing tourism the fishing industry is also important to Kasane’s economy. The river contains an abundance of fish and so the local fishermen are provided with a good income to support their families. Since 1915 Ma-Un has been Botswana’s main city and until the beginning of the 1990s was only accessible via dusty gravel roads, a border town on the edge of a vast wilderness. The state run Moremi National Park that extends for around a hundred thousand hectares is the largest nature reserve in the Okavango Delta. It is located on Chief’s Island, the largest island in the region. In recent years further private wildlife reserves have been established that are well worth a visit and are also strictly controlled and protected natural habitats. Amid the African wilderness we arrive at a luxurious lodge that is not only the ideal starting point for many safaris but also provides a good degree of relaxation after an exhausting day out. Suddenly two members of the San Tribe approach the lodge. These ‘Bushmen’ will accompany us on our journey into the Kalahari Desert that is also their home. Elephant herds on the Chobe River, the vast wilderness of the Kalahari and the mystique of the Okavango Delta help to make Botswana one of the last great paradises on Earth! -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Tanzania Vacation Travel Video Guide

51:34
Travel video about destination Tanzania. Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and is located slightly south of the Equator. Its large variety of nature is overwhelming and includes the Serengeti and Selous Nature Reserves, the snow-covered Kilimanjaro and the spice island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. It is a country of superlatives that originated in 1964 as a result of the union of two independent countries, Tanganika and Zanzibar. On the slopes of Meru and Kilimanjaro, coffee, maize, bananas and vegetables are grown and then offered for sale at various markets. Due to its fertile volcanic soil the entire region has been used for agriculture since the middle of the nineteenth century by both the Arusha Massai and Meru tribes. The Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and its green forests are a perfect playground for the countless monkeys that live there. Around twenty million years ago its landscape was created due to volcanic activity and wonderful craters were formed as well as impressive volcanic cones. The swampy forest on the slopes of the Rift Valley features more than thirty different varieties of tree, an impressive area that offers distant views across fascinating and untouched nature and for the many wealthy tourists who spend their money in the region there are various special locations that provide excellent accommodation. The origins of the Selous Game Reserve date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Later, under British rule, they were united into a large protected area. Tanzania is a natural paradise that is still known by only a few. An exotic country and one that is still waiting to be explored! -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Hawaii (USA) Vacation Travel Video Guide

51:34
✱ 4.944 Hotels in Hawaii - Lowest Price Guarantee ► https://booki.ng/2tlEKtD Travel video about destination Hawaii. The Hawaiian Islands are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and form the 50th state of the USA. In the south east of the island of O’Ahu, Honolulu is a modern town and the starting point for most journeys. It also contains the Iolani Palace - once the residence of King David Kalakana -a magnificent Victorian structure in the centre of Honolulu and the only royal palace in the United States. In Pearl Harbour, a museum commemorates the events of the seventh of December 1941 when most of the American Pacific fleet was destroyed by the Japanese. The valley of Nuuanu Pali is of great importance in Hawaiian history. It was here that a deciding battle took place, when King Kamehameh came from Maui and triumphantly drove the troops of the chief of Oahu into the mountains, the result of which formed the political union of the Hawaiian Islands. In winter, the world’s best surfers collect on Sunset Beach, attracted by spectacular waves, some of which reach as high as the tallest church steeples. On the island of Kaua’i, the Wailua is Hawaii’s only navigable river and it flows through some of the exciting locations which were used for Jurassic Park, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Blue Hawaii. Two volcanoes dominate the extraordinary island of Maui, which also features sandy beaches, green pastures, dense jungle and a bleak lunar-like landscape. On Waimea Beach in 1778, the English sea captain, James Cook, was the first European to set foot on Hawaiian territory. The Waimea Canyon was referred to by Mark Twain as ‘The Grand Canyon of the Pacific’, a massive gorge which has been carved out of the volcanic landscape by the Waimea River. From a Victorian style station there is the narrow-gauge Sugar Cane Train which travels through the once prolific sugar plantations of Kaanapali. Haleakale is the world’s largest dormant volcano with a crater as large as Manhattan. But nowhere else in the world can volcanoes be studied as safely as on Big Island in the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park The Hawaiian Islands…priceless pearls in the Pacific Ocean. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Darjeeling, India - Travel Guide and Attractions

03:48
Check out my Darjeeling travel guide here - http://migrationology.com/2013/05/darjeeling-travel-guide-things-you-need-to-know/ | Have Facebook? https://www.facebook.com/migrationology Darjeeling, India, is located in the very Northern part of the West Bengal state. Coming from Kolkata, it's hard to believe that Darjeeling is actually in the same state, it's such a vastly different place. In order to get to Darjeeling, India, it's easiest to take the train to the nearest station which is located at New Jalpaiguri (known just as NJP by the train code). There's little to do in NJP, but from right outside the train station you can then board to a shared jeep and for 200 Rupees, you can take the jeep straight to Darjeeling. The jeep normally takes about 4 hours to reach the town and they will often stop for a few bathroom and snack breaks. The ride to Darjeeling is very windy and very uphill into the mountains, so if you get sick easily, be sure to take motion sickness medication. You will have some amazing views on the road! Darjeeling, India, is an old hill station that offers beautiful views of the Himalayas. It's a small town and unlike other huge Indian cities, it's much quieter, peaceful, and it's a very nice place to just explore on foot (though not all the attractions are accessible on foot). So after arriving in Darjeeling, I first set off to explore the Chowrasta Square, which is a non-vehicle area with shops restaurants and cafes. There are also many trails leading from the square to other parts of the town. I explored a few of the footpaths leading in various directions to discover Buddhist Tibetan temples and other residential areas. Probably the most famous thing about Darjeeling, India, is its production of tea; It's one of the most famous places in the world for tea. The climate, elevation, and rich Himalayan soil make it prime growing conditions. Surrounding Darjeeling you'll have a chance to see rolling tea fields and if you have time you can even visit a tea farm such as Happy Valley. Don't forget to buy plenty of tea in Darjeeling before you depart. At the top of the main hill in Darjeeling is the Mahakal Temple, one of the most famous Hindu / Buddhist temples in the city. The temple is fully decorated by Tibetan colorful flags and there are lots and lots of monkeys, that can at times be aggressive. You can also walk around the area and explore the cave. Just be careful of the scammers in this area that try to ask you for donations. Another one of the most famous attractions in Darjeeling, India, is the Darjeeling Himalayan railroad which is better known as the Toy Train. It's an old locomotive train that runs of burning coal. You can go to the railroad station and purchase tickets daily for the joy ride, which is a 1.5 hour circuit that takes you on a leisurely ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom, the highest elevation railroad station in all of India. The railroad is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center is a center for Tibetan refugees where you'll find handicrafts and other things to purchase. When I went it was quite quiet and there actually wasn't much to do there. Other really popular attractions in Darjeeling, India, include the Himalayan Zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which are located on the same compound and accessed with the same entrance ticket fee. The zoo was interesting and included a snow leopard and lots of red pandas. The mountaineering institute is a museum that houses many artifacts from Himalayan mountain climbing expeditions. While many choose to wake up and go to Tiger Hill for the sunrise of the beautiful Himalayan mountain range, I was so cold that I didn't wake up and just stayed on the balcony of my hotel to view the gorgeous sunrise over the mountains. Darjeeling, India, is a beautiful little town and you'll have a great and relaxing time when you travel there! Egypt Vacation Travel Video Guide

51:32
Travel video about destination Egypt. Egypt is a land of monumental temples, gigantic pyramids, the River Nile and the mysterious Sphinx: 5000 years of history.Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell. Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us.
