Roy Lichtenstein's "Sleeping Girl" sold for nearly $45 million US Dollars, setting a new record for the pop artist at Sotheby's auction of postwar and contemporary art. The 1964 canvas, executed in the artist's signature comic-book style, made its high estimate of $40 million US Dollars which did not include commission. Tobias Meyer, auctioneer and worldwide head of contemporary art for Sotheby's responded to the exciting sale: "What we are particularly excited about of course are the three top lots, four top lots, one, the world record price for a Lichtenstein painting of $44,882,500 (USD); and also the biggest prices for a single panel by Francis Bacon at the same price of $44,882,500 (USD). We are thrilled about the "Double Elvis" at $37 million (USD). So all our three top lots made it $30-40 million (USD) sought in this global market. You could see that we had global bidding on all the lots especially on the Lichtenstein you saw how many bidders were pursuing such a beautiful icon that we were very proud of,Just over 80% of the 57 lots on offer found buyers, and three works sold for more than $35 million US Dollars each, including Andy Warhol's "Double Elvis" which fetched $37 Million.

This film offers comprehensive documentation on a major public sculpture by the Pop master, Roy Lichtenstein. Just as he drew inspiration from cartoons and advertising to produce some of the most indelible images in contemporary painting, Lichtenstein became intrigued by a brushstroke he saw in a cartoon as a "symbol" of painting. "It's a way of describing my thoughts as quickly as possible." -- Roy Lichtenstein This film was produced on the occasion of an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It provides a useful overview to the work of this seminal Pop artist, and it also gets behind the sometimes impenetrably slick surfaces of Lichtenstein's canvases and prints, to show how such works have their genesis. Curator Nicholas Cullinan introduces Tate Modern's Edvard Munch exhibition, and explains how the artist's fascination with new technologies influenced his paintings Few modern artists are better known and yet less understood than Edvard Munch. He is often seen as a 19th-century Symbolist painter but this exhibition shows how he engaged with modernity and was inspired by the everyday life outside of his studio such as street scenes and incidents reported in the media. He was also influenced by the technological developments in cinema and photography at the time, referenced by his use of prominent foregrounds and strong diagonals. This technique creates the illusion of figures walking towards the viewer, a trick seen in many of Munch's most innovative work. Underpinning Munch's work is his preoccupation with psychological themes, exploring states of anxiety, isolation and fear -- states which, as this exhibition shows, Munch continued to explore right up to the end of his life.

SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/FashionTVSUB http://www.FashionTV.com/videos LONDON - When the first Acne cinched look hit the catwalk on opening model Kinga Rajzak, we wondered if the collection was going to take on an Eastern motif. After all, her coat looked like a kimono and the belt was wide in that Japanese style. Still, the outfit was solid colored and the calf-length skirt looked like it was made out of a shiny leather. The Fall/Winter 2012-2013 collection at London Fashion Week was inspired by art. Designer Johnny Johansson was mainly inspired by Andre Kertesz's distorted nudes from the 30s, but it was hard to tell from the dark colors in this collection, mainly red and black, against the oversize jackets. He also referenced the strong and powerful warrior woman, a common theme among London designers including Vivienne Westwood. We're guessing this is where those thick belts fit in, though we're not sure if the Geisha-style woman was ever thought of as powerful. Johansson obviously thinks so. He also talked of Hans Bellmer's dolls created to protest fascism. Thus, the Acne silhouette was obviously strong in that utilitarian sense, but particularly in terms of the art that came out of a fascist era. I thought that Roy Lichtenstein's paintings would be interesting to see brought to life by motion. The animation was made using Adobe After Effects. The song is "Stardust" by John Coltrane.

Jessica Lichtenstein Play Exhibition: November 17 - December 15, 2011 "People are drawn to certain of the pieces--both men and women. The piece becomes a sort of Rorschach Test--and what people see are themselves, their fantasies, their aspirations and in the words of Shakespeare, the girls hold 'a mirror up to nature'." Fascinated by the mass-production and fetishization of hyper-sexualized Japanese figurines, Lichtenstein manipulates the presentation and context of mass-produced anime dolls in order to imbue them with new associations and richer meanings. Originally lifeless figurines packaged alongside hundreds of identical toys, the dolls emerge from their boxes and are placed in real-world situations by the artist, from shopping, cooking or gardening, to looking at art or enjoying a cocktail. Each girl is given specifically Western accoutrements: designer shoes and bags, bottles of champagne, shelves of nail polishes, expensive Italian luggage, and chess pieces. Elaborating on her last exhibition, Lichtenstein moves a step further to create imagined landscapes, and expands her media to include graphic design, 3D text sculptures, light boxes and fabric. The artist strives for the presentation of her work to echo her ideas -- art should ultimately entertain. Lichtenstein reveals her playful nature with complex pieces that divulge their depth only with a closer look -- a cherry tree image on a light box is actually a composite of X-rated sirens. The viewer is asked to re-examine the nature of enticement -- are the accompanying phrases and speech bubbles amatory or garish? Each vignette in Lichtenstein's installations is a slate upon which the viewer may consider his or her own notions of sexuality. Following her last exhibition at gallery nine5, Lichtenstein received much attention from international press. The artist's work is already in some of the homes of the most important pop-art collectors, and held in private collections in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, New York, Palm Beach, Beverly Hills, Nice, London, Paris and Madrid. Most recently, Lichtenstein participated in and sold out her work at the SCOPE New York Art Show.

From the middle of the 18th century the history of art has changed dramatically. Instead of the excessivly pompous Rococo style, simplicity, geometry and symmetry featured in Neoclassicism. It found its role-models in Greco-Roman antiquity and its philosophical foundation in the Age of Enlightenment from the same era. Like these, Neoclassicism also has its roots in Germany and above all in France. Two key buildings, which are eternalised in the new Tiffany Art edition, are located in its political and cultural centre Paris. The obverse shows the Panthéon, which Jacques-Germain Soufflot (1713--1780) erected as the abbey church Sainte-Geneviève, by order of the king from 1764 onwards. Shortly after completion it was secularised by the leaders of the French Revolution in 1791 and was declared the French National Hall of Fame. The reverse represents another national symbol - the Arc de Triomphe. Shortly after the Battle of Austerlitz it was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, designed by the architect Jean-François Chalgrin (1739-1811) and completed by Jean-Nicolas Huyot und Guillaume Abel Blouet in 1836.
