Pop Art draws upon the style and imagery of advertising and popular culture to challenge our preconceptions about the nature of art itself. This film features Roy Lichtenstein, one of the great pop artists of our time, discussing his work, his artistic process, and the sources of his inspiration. In the short film about the exhibition "Roy Lichtenstein: A Retrospective," Dorothy Lichtenstein, the artist's widow and president of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, and Harry Cooper, curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art, talk about the iconic artist's signature dots, the wide range of subject matter explored in his art, and the impact of his body of work on contemporary art. The landmark retrospective exhibition is on view at the Gallery through January 13, 2013. "It's a way of describing my thoughts as quickly as possible." -- Roy Lichtenstein This film was produced on the occasion of an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It provides a useful overview to the work of this seminal Pop artist, and it also gets behind the sometimes impenetrably slick surfaces of Lichtenstein's canvases and prints, to show how such works have their genesis. This is a video I made for an Intermediate Video: Animation class with Darrin Martin at UC Davis during Winter quarter of 2012. The assignment was to animate the work of a famous artist. I thought that Roy Lichtenstein's paintings would be interesting to see brought to life by motion. The animation was made using Adobe After Effects. The song is "Stardust" by John Coltrane.

Roy Lichtenstein's "Sleeping Girl" sold for nearly $45 million US Dollars, setting a new record for the pop artist at Sotheby's auction of postwar and contemporary art. The 1964 canvas, executed in the artist's signature comic-book style, made its high estimate of $40 million US Dollars which did not include commission. Tobias Meyer, auctioneer and worldwide head of contemporary art for Sotheby's responded to the exciting sale: "What we are particularly excited about of course are the three top lots, four top lots, one, the world record price for a Lichtenstein painting of $44,882,500 (USD); and also the biggest prices for a single panel by Francis Bacon at the same price of $44,882,500 (USD). We are thrilled about the "Double Elvis" at $37 million (USD). So all our three top lots made it $30-40 million (USD) sought in this global market. You could see that we had global bidding on all the lots especially on the Lichtenstein you saw how many bidders were pursuing such a beautiful icon that we were very proud of,Just over 80% of the 57 lots on offer found buyers, and three works sold for more than $35 million US Dollars each, including Andy Warhol's "Double Elvis" which fetched $37 Million.

This film offers comprehensive documentation on a major public sculpture by the Pop master, Roy Lichtenstein. Just as he drew inspiration from cartoons and advertising to produce some of the most indelible images in contemporary painting, Lichtenstein became intrigued by a brushstroke he saw in a cartoon as a "symbol" of painting. SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/FashionTVSUB http://www.FashionTV.com/videos LONDON - When the first Acne cinched look hit the catwalk on opening model Kinga Rajzak, we wondered if the collection was going to take on an Eastern motif. After all, her coat looked like a kimono and the belt was wide in that Japanese style. Still, the outfit was solid colored and the calf-length skirt looked like it was made out of a shiny leather. The Fall/Winter 2012-2013 collection at London Fashion Week was inspired by art. Designer Johnny Johansson was mainly inspired by Andre Kertesz's distorted nudes from the 30s, but it was hard to tell from the dark colors in this collection, mainly red and black, against the oversize jackets. He also referenced the strong and powerful warrior woman, a common theme among London designers including Vivienne Westwood. We're guessing this is where those thick belts fit in, though we're not sure if the Geisha-style woman was ever thought of as powerful. Johansson obviously thinks so. He also talked of Hans Bellmer's dolls created to protest fascism. Thus, the Acne silhouette was obviously strong in that utilitarian sense, but particularly in terms of the art that came out of a fascist era. FERNAND LEGER BEYELER, KELLER & BUTTNER Book Number: 70681 Product format: Paperback Fernand Léger is central to the history of modern art. Emerging from World War I obsessed with mechanical objects and machinery, he changed his style from the Cubism of Picasso and Braque to the formalism of an innovative vision of the city, demonstrated in this 2008 exhibition catalogue by works such as "Le Pont" (The Bridge, 1923) with its strong red and black verticals and stylised river suggested by a checkerboard pattern. Compositions with figures from this period also demonstrate a massive simplicity of form, for instance "La femme au compotier" (Woman with a fruit dish) which apart from its harmonious composition shows Léger as a skilled colourist. Exile in the US during World War II led to a new dynamic emphasis in the "Plongeurs" (Divers) series, and Pop Art, through the influence of Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein and Ellsworth Kelly, became a major source of inspiration, for example in the 1946 burst of energy entitled "Adieu New York". The circus was a preoccupation of his later years, and the study of the acrobat "La grande Julie" (1945) deserves its pride of place on the cover of this volume. Essays on Léger's work accompany the text, including an interview with Lichtenstein and a compendium of comments by Ellsworth Kelly and other American artists. The final section reproduces works by Léger side by side with comparable canvases by other artists. A superb revaluation of Léger's importance and an overwhelming visual feast. 135 full-page reproductions, list of exhibits, detailed chronology. 208pp, large softback. Published price: £35 Bibliophile price: £15.00
