Working 24 Hours Straight at Waffle House | Bon Appetit

08:29
Bon Appetit's Andrew Knowlton works a 24-hour shift at Waffle House. The first Waffle House diner opened in Atlanta, Georgia in 1955. Today, the chain restaurant has more than 1,700 locations in 25 states, mostly in the South. Waffle House is known for being open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Knowlton's full day on the job starts a little before 7 AM. All Waffle House employees must be either clean-shaven or wear a beard guard, so Knowlton decides to shave the beard. Once Knowlton has his uniform, his on-the-job training an orientation begins. He gets to work making bacon, eggs, waffles, Texas toast, and hash browns. During his down time, Knowlton sits down with Waffle House co-founder, Tom Forkner to learn more about the eatery's history. One of the daily tasks at Waffle House for employees is mixing waffle batter using a power drill attached to a whisk. From there, Knowlton powers through the lunch shift into the evening hour dinner rush and well into late night. As early morning approaches again, Knowlton has lost all track of time but has gained appreciation and admiration for all Waffle House employees. Hugh Hefner's Son Tells Us What It Was Like Growing Up In The Playboy Mansion

04:43
While most people associate the Playboy Mansion with scantily clad playmates and sex-fueled debauchery, it served as the childhood home for Hugh Hefner's sons. Now 23, Hefner's youngest son, Cooper, recounts his childhood spent in what many consider to be a sort of adult fantasyland. For Cooper, it was quite the opposite: a child's wonderland fueled by Indiana Jones-inspired adventures in the Grotto, a zoo full of exotic animals, and epic games of hide-and-seek played in the mansion's private forest of redwood trees. Cooper shared his experiences growing up inside the mansion, and invited Business Insider along on a private tour of the grounds. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI Video On Facebook: http://on.fb.me/1bkB8qg Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. The Amazon’s Boiling River Kills Anything That Enters

02:34
When Andrés Ruzo was a boy, his grandfather would tell him tales of a mythical city of gold deep in the heart of the Peruvian jungle. Though never believing the stories to be true, the legend of the lost city stuck with him into adulthood. Years later, as a geothermal scientist, Ruzo decided to investigate. To his surprise, he discovered an incredulous river deep in the Amazon, with water hot enough to kill a human. Historically a place of pilgrimage for shamans and sorcerers, the river now faces increasing threats from poachers, loggers and squatters. Now, Ruzo is working hard to protect it. 10 Terrifying Places Science Still Can't Explain

13:01
How to Learn More about the Earth. The scientific community has made great strides in discovering a lot about the planet we call home. Yet there’s still so much we don’t know! In this video, we’ll tell you about 10 of the most mysterious and bewildering places on Earth that even scientists can’t explain! Magnetic Hill, Skeleton Lake, Boiling River and a Dancing Forest. Plus, some mysterious waters where ships disappear. TIMESTAMPS Skeleton Lake 0:56 The Hessdalen Lights 1:53 Lake Anjikuni 2:41 The Devil's Sea 3:43 The Lake Michigan Triangle 4:44 Magnetic Hill 6:11 The Devil's Kettle 6:57 The Patomskiy Crater 7:57 The Boiling River 9:55 The Dancing Forest 11:16 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -Every year when the snow and frozen water melt, Roopkund Lake in the Himalayas reveals 300 skeletons dumped in it. -The Hessdalen Lights occasionally turn yellowish or reddish, and nobody knows what makes them change color. -Canadian fur trapper Joe Labelle came to a village located on the shore of Lake Anjikuni to find it completely deserted. -Some folks call the Devil's Sea the Pacific Bermuda Triangle since ships and planes tend to disappear there with the same regularity as its North Atlantic counterpart. -The Lake Michigan Triangle has been gaining its notorious reputation since 1891 when a ship disappeared in its waters, along with its crew of seven sailors. -If you turn off the engine of your car and leave it in neutral on the Magnetic Hill, your vehicle will start climbing ahead, possibly at a speed of 12 miles per hour. -About a mile before the river empties into Lake Superior, a rocky outcrop splits it in two. And while the eastern flow drops 50 feet down and keeps flowing into the lake, the western part travels 10 feet down into a giant hole... and vanishes. -Located in Siberia, the Patomskiy Crater is described as a mound with a perfectly circular shape. It’s as big as a 25-story building, sits right in the middle of a wooded area with its top chopped off, and presents quite a sight. -The Boling River really is steaming hot. At a temperature of 187°F, it’s not exactly boiling, but it’s pretty close. -Located on the thin Curonian Spit that divides the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon is one of the strangest places on Earth. The pine trees in this forest have shockingly unusual shapes: they twist in spirals and circles along the ground. You can check out the OnePlus 6T: https://www.oneplus.com In today's video, we're bringing you for the ULTIMATE Chinese Noodle Tour, bringing you to 5 MAJOR Chinese cities to eat the best Chinese Street Food and the BEST Chinese noodles in the world!! Dan Dan noodles, hand pulled noodles, Hong Kong rice noodles, beef noodle soup, and more, it's all in this video!!! Make sure to follow The Food Ranger behind the scenes here: ►https://www.instagram.com/thefoodranger ►Make sure to Subscribe to The Food Ranger here: http://bit.ly/2cCy2ub In this food video travel vlog, I'm (Trevor James, The Food Ranger), bringing you to eat some of the most UNIQUE Chinese noodles! We're starting the noodle tour in Beijing, China, and enjoying a huge bowl of Beijing Zhajiangmian AKA Beijing Zhajiang noodles, one of the most fragrant and satisfying noodle chews you'll ever experience. AND, we're complimenting that bowl of Beijing noodles with a delicious bowl of pork organ stew, an intense organ aroma stew with chopped intestines and lungs. Delicious! After traveling to Beijing to eat noodles, we're flying direct into Lanzhou, the home of the world famous muslim Chinese street food. Here, the local Hui chinese cook up some of the best Halal Chinese food in the world, and have a UNIQUE specialty that is worth flying for, the Lanzhou lamian, AKA Lanzhou ramen AKA lanzhou beef noodle soup! WOW! This is one of the BEST noodle dishes you'll ever taste! And watching the extremely tasty Lanzhou noodles being hand pulled is one of the most satisfying things to watch too! The beef noodle soup is made with beef fat and bone and also lots of local radish which gives it an incredibly complex and satisfying aroma to slurp on!! And you can order up as many slices of beef to put on top of your lanzhou noodles as well! After traveling to Lanzhou, we're flying in to Chengdu to eat Sichuan food and of course, the one and only Sichuan Dan Dan noodles!!! Dan dan noodles or Dandan mian as they are called here in China are one of the most incredibly aromatic and "Xiang" bowls of noodles you'll ever experience. The spicy chili oil and the intense pork aroma with a slight earthy kick from pickled mustard greens is truly unlike anything in the whole world. You have to fly here to eat these! They are absolutely incredible! AND, we're topping off the noodles with a nice plump bowl of Hongyouchaoshou AKA Chinese hot chili oil wontons! They burst in your mouth with flavour and chili oil! WOWWW!!! In Chengdu, Sichuan cuisine is at the top of it's game, super flavourful and intense with Sichuan chili and peppercorn, and I definitely recommend flying in to eat it! After Chengdu dan dan noodles, we're taking a direct flight to Shanghai to eat my personal favourite bowl of noodles in the city, and a bowl that is worth flying in direct to China to eat for, the majiang mian AKA sesame butter noodles. The noodles are full of chili oil and sesame butter mixed together, so you have this EXTREMELY satisfying nutty and spicy combo over top of springy al dente noodles, and, you can top it off with some nice spicy pork chunks! It doesn't get any better than that!! Another BIG WOW!!! After shanghai, we're finishing this food travel video by flying in direct to Hong Kong, another world famous food destination, to eat some cantonese cuisine and some southern Chinese noodles, the ganchaoniuhe, AKA stir fried chinese rice noodles with tender slices of beef! We're visiting a local daipaidong AKA Chinese street food alley stall that is packed with hungry locals who all love eating tons of delicious Cantonese cuisine and seafood! Why Bluefin Tuna Is So Expensive | So Expensive

A tuna once sold for $1.8 million, but you can get cans of tuna fish for less than $2 at the grocery store. So, what's the difference? Bluefin tuna can be very expensive depending on where you buy it and which part of the fish you are eating. We spoke with the chef at Shoji in New York, Derek Wilcox, to find out why the fish is so expensive. ------------------------------------------------------ #BluefinTuna #Fish #BusinessInsider Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more. The Rise And Fall Of Hooters Air

06:03
You might not remember it, but at one point Hooters had an airline. Hooters Air launched in 2003, but closed about three years later. The company cited a number of reasons for the airline's failure, including a $40 million loss. But in the short time that Hooters Air existed, it made a major economic impact on one city in particular — Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — that's where the airline was headquartered, and where it brought thousands of tourists every week. We talked to people who worked for Hooters Air — flight attendants and one pilot (who asked to remain anonymous). They told us what it was really like to work for the airline (which featured two Hooters Girls on every flight) and dispelled some common misperceptions about what it was like to fly it. Hooters declined to comment for this story. -------------------------------------------------- Follow Business Insider on Twitter: https://twitter.com/businessinsider Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. Why Koi Fish Are So Expensive | So Expensive

05:04
Koi fish are colorful patterned common carp that are now celebrated in annual koi shows and kept in ponds all over the world. Some are worth millions. ------------------------------------------------------ #Koi #Fish #BusinessInsider Following is a transcript of the video: Anything strike you as special about this fish here? Well, it's worth 1.8 million dollars. It won grand champion at the All Japan Koi Show in 2017, and is the most expensive koi fish ever sold. Koi may just look like an oversized goldfish, but they're not even remotely related. Koi are actually a type of carp, and today they're some of the most expensive pet fish in the world. But why? Koi were originally raised in Japan in the 1700s when rice farmers first began breeding them for their distinct colors and patterns, similar to how we breed dogs for their specific traits. And just like prized dog breeds, Japanese people take koi breeding very seriously. There are regular competitions to name the top koi. Judges and buyers pay attention to how healthy its skin looks, its size and body shape, and how gracefully the fish moves in the water. But the most important trait of all is the koi's coloring. The best koi have a good balance of colors and patterns according to their variety. For example, there are koi with light blue spots, ones with large red patches on their backs, or all-metallic gold. But the most winning fish often just boil down to these three varieties. They're often the most valuable. They dominate the shows, winning nearly every major category each year. And the better-looking the fish, the more a buyer is willing to pay. Yvo: Yeah, it depends. You can buy some small and cheap koi fish for a couple of bucks, but also, yeah, it can get up really, really high to thousands, ten thousands of dollars. Narrator: That's Yvo de Wal. He's a koi hobbyist and seller in the Netherlands, and he heads up the YouTube channel Koi Partner. Each year he visits Japan to shop for koi. Yvo: The breeders are located there, and they have experience with their bloodlines for many, many generations. Narrator: You see, bloodlines are just as prized in koi as they are in dogs because some of these koi are the result of decades of selective breeding. I mean, just take a look at the koi's wild relative, the common carp. Its dark colors would be considered unattractive for a koi, but it's perfect protection against predators in the wild. So how do you get from this to this? Well, it's actually similar to how we got from this to this, except koi breeders mainly select for size and color and ignore... Fluffiness. Koi have six types of color cells in their skin. Their cells can be red, yellow, black, white, blue, or metallic. Now in order to get a beautiful, reddish-orange pattern like the one on this 1.8 million dollar fish, you need to select for fish that have a white body and lots of red cells that concentrate in large patches. Red and white are important colors in Japanese culture, representing joy and purity. But having the right colors is only part of it. A koi's color cells sit at different depths in the skin, some right near the surface and some deeper in, which ultimately determines how bright the fish appears. The brighter the fish, the bigger the price tag. Today there are about 120 varieties. To compare, there are about 200 breeds of dogs. But when it comes down to it, breeding koi is a lot harder. A single koi can give birth to hundreds of thousands of baby fish at a time. Yvo: I think we are talking about millions and millions of fish per breeder. Narrator: So breeders must choose wisely. One breeder, for example, reports that he starts with 3 million fish and selects 15,000 to raise over the first year. From that he chooses 1,000 to continue to raise the second year. Yvo: Yeah, it's a really hard job for the breeders. Narrator: But in the end, all that hard work is worth it. The breeder of this grand champion waited until she was nine years old to sell her at auction. And by bringing in a world record of 1.8 million, the breeder got not only a huge return on investment but a priceless reputation boost in the koi community. ------------------------------------------------------ Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more. The Man Clearing 9,000 Tons of Trash From Mumbai’s Beaches

Over three years ago, Versova beach in Mumbai was little more than a dumping ground for garbage and waste. After witnessing the devastating impact the refuse was having on the ocean, Afroz Shah decided to take matters into his own hands. What started off as a single man’s mission to clean up his favorite childhood beach turned into the world’s largest beach cleanup initiative. As of today, Shah and hundreds of volunteers have cleaned up over nine million kilograms of plastic and waste, with hopes to expand their initiative to other beaches in the future. Phillips Academy in Andover is the best high school in America

03:32
We visited Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts to see what makes it the best high school in America. The school is often confused with Phillips Exeter. There are 1,154 students on Andover's campus. Tuition for students living on campus is $53,900. Tuition for day students is $41,900. Andover has a "need-blind" admissions policy which means they accept students based on merit, not wealth. There are 44 states and 44 countries represented in the current student body. Following is a transcript of the video. Jenny Elliott: Folks who are not so close to Andover or who haven’t experienced something like this will say, “you were sent to boarding school.” And, a sense of agency for kids to feel like, “I wasn’t sent anywhere. I wasn’t sent by my parents. I chose to go to boarding school.” David Tsai: I’m a senior from Natick, Massachusetts. I have attended Andover for four years. And it is a distinct pleasure of mine to bring all of you around on what I believe is the best school in the world. The most important thing you learn on this campus is how every single faculty member and every single student, when they are walking on, these are called the paths, they’re smiling. They’re clearly enjoying themselves at this school. I believe that the boarding experience is so much more beneficial to the student because they get to live on their own and they get to experience high school as most people experience their college years. John Palfrey: What we’re trying to accomplish here is to be absolutely excellent in the classic ways of academics, of sports, of arts, of community engagement — all of those things — while also really focusing on the young person in their wholeness and to make sure that we encourage kids to have wellness as central to their experience. To make sure they’re getting sleep, to make sure that they’re eating well, to make sure they’re exercising. All of those things I think go together with this idea of excellence. And I think that that combination of things is working really well right now. Elliott: We don’t post grade point averages. We try to take some very specific steps not to elevate competition in those ways. We do a lot of collaborative work in classes, we do a lot of collaborative work on teams, we do a lot of collaborative work outside — and we do, in terms of our leadership positions for students, there are many positions where there’s actually co-presidents or there are co-leaders to send a clear message to our kids — collaboration is a skill that you’re going to need to develop well in order to be able to move forward here with success. Tsai: Mental health here is one of the most important things on campus because the only way for you to show your affection for someone, to love someone else, to build connections and build bonds, is to firstly love yourself. Palfrey: The most distinctive thing about Andover’s program is the need-blind admissions policy in our 11th year. How can you have a morally responsible high school with a $1 billion endowment? It’s when you actually do admit kids solely on the basis of their admission criteria that have nothing to do with wealth. Tsai: I am so happy that I made the decision to come here because there is so clearly a universal commitment to being loved and to love that you don’t find at any other school. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. We spent the day with a local family, who live in clay houses they built, on a rice farm which provides food for the family. Any additional rice they have, they sell to make a living. The family of 25 invited us to join them for a family feast of goose. One goose feeds the entire family, and we were fortunate enough to be able to experience this family meal. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 💬COME SAY HI: INSTAGRAM » http://bit.ly/BestEverInstagram (@besteverfoodreviewshow) FACEBOOK » http://bit.ly/BEFRSFacebook 💗SUPPORT OUR MISSION: Patreon is a platform that allows people to support creators on a recurring basis. It's our first night in Japan ever and we're staying at a CAPSULE HOTEL! The futuristic design gave me galaxy vibes. It felt like we were inside a spaceship floating among the stars. The pods turned out to be more spacious than expected. I did not get claustrophobic, but everyone's level of comfort varies in enclosed spaces. How about the rest of the experience? Making Primitive Smreka: a fermented Bosnian drink

06:44
While collecting juniper berries in the Mojave desert I came to realize how useful this tree is. I also learned that a popular Bosnian drink called Smreka is made by fermenting the berries (which are actually cones) in water. I love fermentation so I decided to try it. I added approximately 1 cup of raw whole unwashed berries to my gourd (pumpo) and then approximately 2 quarts of water (make sure the water is safe to drink). I put a loose cork on the gourd so gases can still escape and then I'll let it ferment until the next full moon (about 1 month). I shake it about once a day and that is it. Simple, two ingredients and let nature do the rest. I will make another video when I taste it and link to that video at the end of this one. 1 cup juniper berries 2 quarts water 1 month of fermentation Follow me on Facebook.com/chadzuber Follow me on Instagram @zuberchad Camera: Nikon D7200 Audio: Zoom H4N Editing: Final Cut Pro X Location: Mojave Desert and the Hut Music credit: Drums of the Deep by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1400021 Artist: http://incompetech.com/

Why This NYC Apartment Costs $28.5 Million

06:50
We set out to find out why this apartment is $28.5 million and learn about the history of New York's real estate market along the way. The reality TV star and top NYC broker Ryan Serhant delves into the details of the super-rich real-estate and who the buyer could be. Following is a transcript of the video: Narrator: A couple months ago, I was scrolling through YouTube and saw this video of an apartment on Billionaires' Row in New York City. It's on the 41st floor of this ultra-luxurious tower called On e57. Sitting right off West 57th Street with views of Central Park, it's listed at a whopping $28.5 million. It's hard to comprehend why it's so expensive and if there's even a market for it. So I reached out to the realtor, Ryan Serhant, hoping he could help me unpack the world of Billionaires' Row. You may recognize Ryan from Bravo's "Million Dollar Listing." And he invited me uptown to check out On e57 for myself. Ready, we're going there. One57 towers almost a thousand feet above West 57th Street. But before the building opened in 2014, this wasn't really a residential street. It was known for Carnegie Hall, tourists, and delis. But One57 put West 57th Street on the map, breaking records for listing prices and coining the street Billionaires' Row. The first 27 floors of One57 are reserved for the five-star Park Hyatt hotel, but the next 48 are residential. Walking in, I was actually pretty surprised by how homey it felt. Yeah, the lobby was classy, but there was this familiar and casual buzz of people just living their normal lives, and that was really nice. We took the elevator to the 41st floor and met Ryan at apartment 41D. Ryan Serhant: Hello. Welcome to One57. Narrator: Right away, it's gorgeous. 12-foot ceilings, exquisite decor, and that new building smell. But it's those views that obviously add to the price tag. Serhant: This unit that we're in right now, 41D, is a duplex. It's got five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, and it has an outdoor covered garden. Narrator: Apparently, that outdoor garden, or the solarium, is a rare architectural feature. Serhant: The building kinda curves as it goes up. It keeps stepping back, you create these rooms. So you can sit here, you can get a tan, for the 41st floor on Billionaires' Row. It's totally crazy. Narrator: Just off the solarium, there's a private terrace, and it's one of just two apartments in the building with an outdoor space. After the views and solarium, the duplex layout of the apartment keeps the price tag ticking up. The second floor has four bedrooms, including the master suite, with arguably better views than the floor below. The en suite master bathroom is made completely of marble, imported from Italy, of course. You've got a walk-in shower, free-standing tub, and two toilets, you know, just in case. Back downstairs, the massive eat-in kitchen had a couple hidden features. Serhant: Like this looks like it might be cabinetry, but it blends in. These are actually your bar stools. Narrator: Around every corner, there was some new design element. A fluffy chair, a perfectly sized rug, that optimized the space. It made for this relaxed, luxurious vibe. And, of course, none of that was by accident. Serhant: And even if the buyer has $30 million to spend, you'd be amazed at how unimaginative they can be. So, we have to show them. And everyone we've shown this apartment to would take it fully furnished, 'cause they just love it. Narrator: Buyers can choose to keep all of the staged furnishings, and thank goodness, the price tag includes the furniture. But what's a billion-dollar building without amenities to match? On the 31st floor, residents get a giant amenities space all to themselves. There's a billiards room, screening room, gym, and a pool, with music piped in from Carnegie Hall across the street. But the never-ending climbing wall was definitely my personal favorite. This isn't what I anticipated doing today. Since its construction, One57 has pushed up real estate prices across the neighborhood. From 57th Street to 59th Street between Park Avenue and Broadway, median sale prices rose 64.3% from 2010 to 2018. ------------------------------------------------------ #RealEstate #NYC #BusinessInsider Business Insider tells you all you need to know about business, finance, tech, retail, and more. Watch a Train Run Through Thailand’s Most Dangerous Market

02:03
In Samut Songkhram, about an hour outside Bangkok, is Maeklong Railway Market, one of the largest produce and seafood markets in Thailand. But beyond the selection of fresh fruit and fish, the market has become infamous for one thing—the train that runs directly through it. In 1905, the Maeklong Railway built a commuter train line through the center of the popular market. But rather than move, the vendors adapted to the new conditions, working around the train that passes through eight times a day, seven days a week. His Burger is UNBELIEVABLE (Best in Bangkok)

04:11
What if I told you that you could eat the BEST BURGER IN BANGKOK, and pay whatever you want? If you love it, pay $15 or $20. If you hate it, pay $0. This is the story of a young man named Taiki, who spends 6 hours every day making 4 burgers for a very exclusive list of people to eat. Yes, he spends more than 1 hour to hand-craft each burger from scratch - every little detail to perfection! Taiki was introduced to burgers when he was living in Washington State a few summers ago. When he returned to Bangkok, he realized there weren't any good burger joints in town -- so he built up the courage to do it all himself. This is one of my favorite videos I've ever made. I have a pretty good feeling that his future restaurant of Homeburg will be famous someday very soon. This video is only the start!! Side note to this video, I met Taiki because his kitchen just happens to be in the same building of my co-working space where I eat lunch everyday. I always see him working his a** off every day cooking burgers, so I approached him only to discover his inspiring story. What a guy! Takanakuy: Fistfighting in the Andes

19:42
Once a year around Christmas in the Peruvian Andes, the whole town gets together to dance, drink and beat the hell out of each other. Christmas festivities vary widely around the world, and are widely a steaming crock of boring shit. Ooh, Swedish girls wear a crown of candles the night before Chistmas? Please tell me more about this scintillating national cust-snzzzZZZZZZZZZ. In the Peruvian Andes, folks know how to celebrate the season right. What they do is, they put on a colorful ski-mask, dress up like Mad Max mountain bikers, tie a dead eagle to their heads, and get drunk and dance for about a week straight. Then, come Christmas morning, they all gather together in the middle of town and beat the baby bejesus out of each other. Now we're talking, right? The festival is called Takanakuy and its equal parts sporting event, indigenous display of hypermasculine defiance in the face of all the lilywhite metropolitan sissies in Lima, and makeshift judicial system. The province of Chumbivilcas, where Takanakuy takes place, has about three cops total and is a stomach-wrecking 10-hour drive through the mountains to the nearest courthouse. So if you've got a beef with a neighbor or someone's taken your girl or sheep, you don't go crying about it to some judge. You bury it away until Christmas, then get yourself all beered up and exact some Andean justice with your fists and feet. Guys, girls, little kids, old drunk men in high-waisted pants; everybody in town fights at Takanakuy. This year we decided to forego the annual family snoozefest and head into the mountains of Peru to test our mettle against the some of the hardiest people from one of the harshest environments in the Americas. We hope you like it, since it broke our mothers' hearts.
