Top 10 Places to visit along the Carretera Austral, Chile

Tourism in this area is not as pronounced as it is in other parts of the country, as regular bus routes, accommodations and detailed info is hard to find. But in this seclusion lies the attraction and a special charm. During my last trip I met very few travelers from Europe and North America. The locals welcomed me warmly and most attractions were not crowded. After traveling this route twice via hitchhiking I thought it is about time that I put together a handy Carretera Austral guide which highlights the main sights along this 1200km long road. The video shows you my favorite places to visit from north to south, starting in Puerto Montt and finishing in Villa O’Higgins. To do the Ruta 7 properly I recommend about 2 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral: - Fjords, Hornopiren, Pumalin Park, Chaiten - Queulat National Park, Queulat Glacier, Puyuhuapi - Rio Futaleufu, Futaleufu - Cerro Castillo, Villa Cerro Castillo - Marble Caves & Lago General Carrera, Puerto Rio Tranquilo - Exploradores Glacier, Puerto Rio Tranquilo - Rio Baker, Cochrane - Caleta Tortel - Villa O'Higgins - O’Higgins Glacier ---About the Patagonia Expedition--- The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Travel Patagonia by Drone in 4k (Best of the Patagonia Expedition)

02:48
For me Patagonia is one of the most beautiful travel destinations on earth, to showcase this I created a montage of the best drone footage from my recent trip. My Guide for Chile: http://www.back-packer.org/chile-travel-guide/ My Guide for Argentina: http://www.back-packer.org/chile-travel-guide/ EQUIPMENT USED DJI Phantom 3 Pro http://amzn.to/28Q2MQV Carbon Propellers http://amzn.to/2bHPY0I Remote Sunshade http://amzn.to/2bHQtrI Extra Batteries http://amzn.to/2crBRm1 Charging Hub http://amzn.to/2bJWKEU Manfrotto Drone Backpack http://amzn.to/290RJWO Waterproof Memory Card Case http://amzn.to/1FFWLCb Durable HDD http://amzn.to/2bC8j5a Over the course of 2 months I traveled Chilean as well as Argentine Patagonia from north to south to produce a documentary series called "The Patagonia Expedition" together with my friend Kristin Addis. The trip started in Bariloche (Argentina) and went via the Carretera Austral (Chile) down south to El Chaltén (Argentina) and finally to Torres del Paine (Chile). It wasn't easy to travel with all the camera gear beside the other equipment we needed, especially considering all the camping stuff (tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment etc) but I wanted to capture the beauty of traveling through Patagonia the best way possible. Throughout the trip we got in touch with locals, stayed longer in one spot to really get to know the place and did all kinds of tough outdoor activities. Due to my former travels I already knew most of the places, got in touch with local friends and tourism businesses to help us create these videos. Not to mention the physical preparations which enabled us do all this activities under those partially tough conditions. We are very grateful for all those experiences, new friendships and cooperations with locals as well as park rangers! DRONE LAWS IN PATAGONIA Please consider that all shots were filmed considering the drone laws in Argentina and Chile at the time we filmed there. Moreover we got special permissions by park rangers in some of the locations such as National Parks or filmed on private property with the permission of the owner (e.g. Torres del Paine). Furthermore I'd like to point out that I took several weeks of practice in training spaces in Europe to ensure safe flights in Patagonia with my drone, especially due to the harsh weather and wind conditions. In order to protect nature and wildlife in this sensitive part of the world I highly recommend to follow these rules as well if you plan to do something similar. Please check with the local laws before you fly, don't fly in National Parks without special permission, please check the weather conditions before you fly and take your time to calibrate your drone before each flight. DRONE & PATAGONIAN WEATHER Consider the extreme weather conditions and come prepared with special equipment as listed above such as a good drone backpack, special propellers, waterproof housing for sd cards and a durable HDD. FILMING LOCATIONS Following I list all the places we visited during our Patagonia Travel: - Bariloche & Villa La Angostura - Chaiten - Puyuhuapi - Villa Santa Lucia - Cerro Castillo - Puyuhuapi - Puerto Rio Tranquilo - Laguna San Rafael National Park & Eploradores Glacier - Queulat National Park / Parque Nacional Queulat - Queulat Glacier / ventisquero queulat (colgante) - Villa O'Higgins - Lago O'Higgins & Bernado O'Higgins National Park - O'Higgins Glacier - Candelario Mansilla - El Chalten & Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre - Los Glaciares National Park - Torres del Paine - Region Los Lagos - Region de Aysén - Provincia Rio Negro - Provincia Santa Cruz - Region Magellanes y Antartica Chilena ABOUT THE PATAGONIA EXPEDITION The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. And yes - there is much more to do but I challenged myself to highlight the most popular things to do in Buenos Aires ;) --- Top 10 Things to do in Buenos Aires, Argentina --- 1) free walking tour (innercity & main sights) I discovered Demasiado tours through Couchsurfing and recommendations from friends I met at different CouchSurfing meetings in Buenos Aires. more info: Demasiado Tours, (http://www.facebook.com/DemasiadoTours) 2) Recoleta neighborhood & cemetery This "barrio" is one of the fancy onces, close to the city center -- great architecture, nice parks and one of the most popular cemeteries in town with impressive graves of notable people like "Evita". I did a free tour here as well to get a quick overview before walking around on my own. more info: Recoleta free walking tour - Buena Onda Free Tour (http://buenaondafreetour.blogspot.com.ar/) La Recoleta Cemetery - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Recoleta_Cemetery 3) Buenos Aires Street Art Tours Matt became a good friend of mine and runs unique graffiti toursfollow providing loads of information about the murals, the artists and the Street Art Scene in general -- a great way for people who are new to Street Art to dive into this interesting culture! more info: Buenos Aires Street Art Tours (#3): BA Street Art Tours, (http://buenosairesstreetart.com/) - also a great Blog about Streetart and Graffiti in general! 4) Ice Cream, Helado, Gelato -- mmmh! The amount of people who immigrated from Italy to Buenos Aires and Argentina in general is very high -- therefore you can find loads of great Ice Cream Parlours here. Beside the big chains like "Freddo" you should go for some family owned businesses -- ask the locals as they know best where to go! more info: Top 5 Ice Cream Parlours (#4): http://www.argentinaindependent.com/life-style/food-drink/top-5-ice-cream-parlours/ 5) Discover Buenos Aires by Bike Time to do something active: grab a bike and cycle around the city (like I did in Berlin)! Since 2 years the city provides a decent network of bicycle routes & most of the hostels offer a bike rental service. This is a great way to get to know Puerto Madero as there is no Subte (Metro) station close to it. more info: Biking in Buenos Aires (#5): article by BBC http://www.bbc.com/travel/feature/20110906-biking-in-buenos-aires-picks-up-speed 6) Parks After all these activities it's time for a break! Luckily you can find a decent amount of green areas all around the city. My favourite one has been "Bosques de Palermo" more info: Top 5 Buenos Aires Parks (#6): http://www.argentinaindependent.com/life-style/thecity/top-5-buenos-aires-parks/ 7) Tango Tango was born in San Telmo and there is an option to watch it for free at the sundays open-air market. 8) San Telmo Market / Sunday fair The best day to visit the oldest barrio of Buenos Aires, San Telmo, is possibly on Sundays where you can stroll along the antique-market. Though it is very touristy it is a good place to get some nice souvenirs. more info: San Telmo (#8): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Telmo,_Buenos_Aires 9) Steak & Malbec Wine There is no visit to Argentina without having a great steak sided by some of the best wines you can find! Beside having an Asado with friends, the restaurant "Las Cabras" is a very good and budget friendly option which is quite popular by locals, too! more info: Steak Restaurant (#9): "Las Cabras" - cheap, tasty and popular amongst locals (https://plus.google.com/117924893443756325463/about?gl=de&hl=en) 10) Party & Nightlife Buenos Aires is exhausting as you can party there every night ;) Around the neighborhood Palermo you can find a high density of Bars and Clubs. === Music: Aries 4Rce BeatZ (http://www.youtube.com/aries4rce)

Come with us as we explore the center of Reykjavik with its many sights, the nightlife, the blue lagoon and the best sights along the golden circle! Even though we finished our trip this won’t be the last episode - in the upcoming episode we talk about everything you need to know about traveling Iceland yourself! Traveling Icelands Ring Road is the perfect way to get to know the country on and off the tourist paths. Therefore we took about 2 weeks to get to know Iceland properly by exploring waterfalls, canyons, hot springs, glacier caves, black beaches and of course the stunning coastlines all around the island finishing off in Reykjavik with the countries biggest music festival called „Iceland Airwaves“ We’ll show you which places to visit & our favorite things to do in Iceland in the upcoming videos and how to plan & organize your very own road trip in Iceland. Surrounded by lakes and situated close to the Andes you can go for big variety of activities. While it is one of the largest ski ressorts in South America in winter it turns into a hikers paradise in summer. Rather than hanging out in the city itself we used it as a base to drive around the 7 lakes, hike & camp to the Tronador and climbed our way up to Frey, Cerro Campanario and Catedral. With this we can give you a bigger picture of the area and you can easily use this video as a Bariloche Guide for your own trip! This part of the trip was executed within 1,5 weeks by using the local buses and a well planned itinerary after we flew in from Buenos Aries - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in Bariloche: - Chocolateria Rapa Nui - Cerro Campanario - San Martin de los Andes - Circuito de los 7 Lagos - Villa La Angostura - Center of Bariloche - Villa Catedral - Cerro Catedral - Refugio Frey - Refugio Otto Meiling - Cerro Tronador - Pampa Linda - Glaciar Castaño Overo I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 8 weeks with you. Road Trip & Things to do in Lapland, Finland

08:59
In search for the best winter spots Kristin & I went on a road trip through Lapland in Finland and checked out all the things to do in Lapland and it was magical! More info: http://www.bemytravelmuse.com/things-to-do-in-lapland/ I know it took a while to finish editing this video as I had to struggle with the 4k video data I got from my new toy: the drone. I'm now able to shoot lovely aerial footage to give you an even broader picture of the destination. Our trip to finnish Lapland started in Rovaniemi with the visit of the Santa Claus village where we said hi to Santa himself and had some fun tubing and drinking at the ice bar in Snowman World. Snowmobiling was a great way to start our second day & I would say it's one of the must dos in Lapland for sure! Next stop was the area of Ylläs where we spent most of our time: ice sculpturing, snowshoeing, skiing, dog sledding, a reindeer safari, sauna and northern light sightings made this trip to once in a lifetime winter experience! --- equipment used to produce this video --- Cam1:Sony A7 II http://amzn.to/1Gfj8MU Cam2: Sony NEX 5 http://amzn.to/1FrMMxB Cam3: GoPro http://amzn.to/1GZdh1q Amazon Tripod http://amzn.to/1Of2HpJ Joby Gorillapod http://amzn.to/1CMyE0b Opteka SteadyCam http://amzn.to/1JCHAeb Zoom H2n Audio Recorder http://amzn.to/1FFVSt4 SDHC Memory Card http://amzn.to/1ygZzWD Waterproof Memory Card Case http://amzn.to/1FFWLCb Backpack Osprey Farpoint 40 http://amzn.to/1ceMOlo This road trip was executed in only a week with a rental car and a well planned itinerary - following I list all the places we visited & things to do in Lapland (Finland): - Santa Claus Village, Rovaniemi - Snowman World, Rovaniemi (part of Santa Claus Village) - Snowmobile Tour with Lapland Safaris, Rovaniemi - Snow Village, Kittilä (igloo, ice sculpturing) - Ylläs Ski Resort, Ylläsjärvi & Äkäslompolo - Aurora Estate, Ylläs - Safartica Reindeer Safari, Kitillä - Snowshoeing, Äkäslompolo - Huskie Safari with Rami's Huskies, Kittilä - Sauna Gondola, Ylläs (Ylläsjärvi) === Made possible by Tourism Boards of: http://www.visitfinland.com http://www.visitrovaniemi.fi http://www.yllas.fi Hotels: Rovaniemi - Sokos Hotel Vaakuna Ylläs - Aurora Estate Tour Operators: Lapland Safaris Rami's Huskies Safartica Locations: Snowman World Snow Village, Kittilä Sauna Gondola, Ylläs --- my travel equipment --- insurance http://www.back-packer.org/worldnomads_versicherung packing list http://www.back-packer.org/patagonia-packing-list-trekking/ Online Language Course http://www.back-packer.org/babbel_eng === My personal recommendations for Hotels & Hostels: http://www.back-packer.org/best-hostels-and-hotels/ === Music: http://www.Epidemicsound.com Follow me: http://www.back-packer.org http://www.twitter.com/BackPackerSteve http://www.facebook.com/BackPackerBlog

From there we headed for the main things to do in Alicante and walked through the old town in the Santa Cruz neighborhood. The Santa Barbara castle is definitely the highlight of every trip to Alicante, from here you have an amazing view - a great spot to enjoy the sunset from before a delicious Tapas feast. This is why you can visit quite a few monumental sights here. We took 2 days to try the local cuisine and explore the best things to do in Isfahan such as roaming the world's second largest square, smoke shisha or visit the big mosques. Due to it's centralized structure and the numerous parks Isfahan is a great city to explore for tourists - all major attractions can be found in and around the huge Naqsh-e Jahan Square. We reached out to the local Couchsurfing community to get in touch with locales who could give us tips beyond the typical tourist sites - it didn't take long until Shayan reached out and offered us to show us his Esfahan. This way we got to see places and eat at restaurants we normally wouldn't have found ourselves. In this video We give a few recommendations of places to visit in Isfahan and typical persian dishes you should try when visiting. 10 Best Beaches in Sri Lanka - East/South/West Coast (Tropical Escape #2)

If you want to go to the south and west coast of Sri Lanka the best time to visit is from December to April. For the east coast the time between April and August is best. We start our journey in Beruwala and Bentota, this very long sand beach is without any doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka and only a 2h drive from the capital. The next stops are the beaches of Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna close to Galle. Further down south you can find Mirissa, a relaxed little town which is a popular starting point for whale watching, too. Afterwards it’s time to spot some wildlife in the Yala National Park which has also a beach...but swimming is not allowed, so we’ll go for a leopard safari instead. The east coast of Sri Lanka is still fairly unknown, therefore I decided to show you this part of the island more in-depth starting with Arugam Bay, a popular surf spot. Pasikudah is a longer drive to the north which is totally worth it - the locals even state it is the most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka! Our last stop is Trincomalee in the north east of the country with its wide beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli. A short boat ride off the main land you should visit Pigeon island which has not only a beautiful beach but an incredible maritime life…so make sure to bring some snorkeling gear! This part of the trip was executed within 2weeks by using buses, trains, cars and a domestic flight (Trincomalee-Colombo) - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do on the coast of Sri Lanka: - Beruwala - Bentota - Hikkaduwa - Unawatuna - Mirissa - Yala & Yala National Park - Arugam Bay - Batticaloa & Kattankudy - Kumana National Park - Kudumbigala sanctuary - Pasikuda - Trincomalee - Uppuveli - Nilaveli - Pigeon Island ---About the Tropical Escape--- Sri Lanka is an island country in South East Asia which has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. For me it was the second time doing the full circuit trek after I did the circuit back in 2013. The Torres del Paine circuit is also called the „O“ due to the shape of the trail - it also represents the extension of the „W“ trek which is most famous hiking route in Chile. Before heading into the park we prepared in Puerto Natales where we bought all supplies needed and planned out our trip and route. We took the early bus into the park and left all the stuff we didn’t need for the trek at the Hotel Las Torres where we were supposed to stay after the finish of the trek. Before and after the season most hostels/hotels and restaurants are closed. - Hiking to Cerro Tore & Laguna Torre - This is an easy day hike where you don't have to be an experience hiker -- take some sunscreen, water and food. After around 3h you'll be at the Laguna Torre. - Hiking to Monte Fitz Roy & Laguna Torre - The most beautiful trail gets you close to the Monte Fitz Roy, the destination is called "Laguna de los Tres". You should start at dawn in El Chalten to avoid the day tourists from Calafate. Be prepared as the trail is pretty tough at the end! - Circuit Trail to Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre (multi day) - Due to the well marked hiking trails you can easily connect both treks to a multi-day itinerary with camping. The present city name, however, is derived from Yazdegerd I, a Sassanid ruler of Persia. Because of generations of adaptations to its desert surroundings, Yazd has a unique Persian architecture and is one of the largest cities built almost entirely out of adobe. Luckily the weather was with us and we got lucky to see the Northern Lights right in front of our house - instead of sleeping we spent several hours in front of our house in total awe. On our second day in the north we drove to Myvatn, Dettifoss and then all the way down to Bragdavellir where we moved into our next Apartment to explore sights in the east like the Hengifoss waterfall. In the next episode we will show you the most popular sights in the south, including glaciers, waterfalls, impressive canyons but also some lesser known spots. Border Crossing & Things to do in El Chaltén, Argentina (Patagonia Expedition #05)

The ruta 7 is a paradise for adventure seekers as it is a mostly unpaved road which brings you to the lesser known parts of Patagonia in the stunning Los Lagos and Aysen Region. Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. After finishing this adventure in the last episode we wanted to get to El Chaltén in Argentina with a visit to the O’Higgins Glacier and an overnight stay at the Farm Candelario Mancilla. To do the border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chaltén one first needs to take a boat to cross the O’Higgins lake and get to Candelario Mancilla on the other side. We opted in for the additional boat excursion to see the O’Higgins Glacier and have some whisky with ice from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. The next stretch we needed to hike for 22km to Laguna del Desierto where we took another boat to cross over to the southern shore where we spend the night camping before hitchhiking the remaining 37km to El Chaltén. El Chaltén is the trekking capital of Argentina and one of the best spots for hiking and climbing in Patagonia. From the several hiking options in this area we chose the popular hike to Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre first before hiking to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres on another dayhike. This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using altogether 2 boat, 1 bus and one car - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in el Chalten: - O'Higgins Glacier / Bernardo O’Higgins National Park - Southern Patagonian Ice Field - Candelario Mancilla - Villa O'Higgins - O’Higgins Lake / Lago O’Higgins or Lago San Martin - Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre - Monte Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres / laguna sucia - Lago del Desierto - El Chalten Boat company at Lago O’Higgins (transfer Candelario Mancilla & O’Higgins Glacier): http://www.robinsoncrusoe.com I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episode we will hike the Huemul Circuit in El Chalten, Argentina and meet impressive characters along the way. The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
