Elderly Bears Take First Steps of Freedom | PETA Animal Rescues

01:34
Four old bears are finally happy after decades of privation. The bears were each living alone in small, filthy, barren cages at a defunct Pennsylvania roadside zoo named Big Bear Farm Zoo. They hadn't set foot out of these cages in at least 20 years. But now, Bruno, Fifi, Pocahontas, and Marsha will have 15 acres of prairie grasses to roam, a swimming hole, hills to climb, and the veterinary care they need. Rather than being confined individually to tiny cages in which they were going mad—swaying and turning in circles in the small space—the bears will live in social groups and be allowed to choose how they spend their time. Instead of small, dilapidated, wooden doghouses, they will each have their own underground den! Rescued Bear's Shocking Transformation | PETA Animal Rescues

Subscribe: https://bit.ly/2Qu3mOO 🔔Turn on ALL push notifications 🔔 More than 30 years ago, a bear cub named Fifi arrived at a Pennsylvania roadside zoo. For years, she and other bears were forced to perform confusing tricks, like standing on their hind legs. After the roadside zoo closed its doors more than 20 years ago, Fifi languished in a tiny, rusted cage that contained nothing more than a dilapidated doghouse for shelter. Fifi was thin, her coat was dull and dirty, and she suffered from painful, untreated arthritis. Every step was a struggle. In July 2015, PETA and The Wild Animal Sanctuary rescued her. She was transported to the Colorado facility, where she finally had the care and the vast habitat that she deserved. After just five months at the sanctuary, Fifi's body finally matches her big and beautiful personality. She is healthy, her coat is full, and her legs are getting stronger every day. And this year, for the first time in her long life, Fifi is hibernating in her new, comfy den. Rescued Bears Freak Out Over New Home

01:29
After the Ohio Department of Agriculture obtained several bears from backyard cages and roadside zoos, it needed to find them good homes. Some were underweight, some were obese, and some suffered from intestinal parasites or broken teeth. So PETA teamed up with The Wild Animal Sanctuary to transport the bears to the beautiful Colorado sanctuary, where they finally took their first steps into their brand-new lives. Two of the bears had been pregnant when they were obtained by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, and their cubs couldn't get enough of their new home. Captive bear cubs are often taken from their mothers shortly after birth, but these mother bears will get to raise their own young, likely for the very first time. After they get their bearings, they will all be released into vast naturalistic habitats, where they'll finally have the space to live like real bears for the first time ever. More Than 80 Rabbits Rescued From Backyard Breeder | PETA Animal Rescues

01:57
PETA discovered that a rabbit-breeding operation in Riverside County, California, had tried to sell off all its bunnies on the Internet. The breeders had been selling rabbits for fur, meat, and reptile food, and now they no longer wanted the business. As is often the case with animals used by breeders, the rabbits were living outside in filthy feces-filled cages. Sitting on the wire cage bottoms caused sores and wounds to develop on their feet, and flies were swarming around them. One of the breeders admitted that the cages had not been cleaned in a year! The vulnerable rabbits had no escape from the filth, no grass, and no semblance of a real life. PETA hopped to, working to get all the bunnies out of there. We moved quickly, as one of the bunnies was already lying dead inside a cage. Our friends at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA agreed to provide the animals with urgently needed veterinary care. The rabbits were suffering from various medical problems, including dental issues, overgrown claws, skin sores, hair loss, and respiratory problems. The rabbits are up for adoption at San Diego Humane Society, which hopes to find them loving homes where they will finally be someone's friends, not food or fur. Firefighter Rescues Unconscious Dog—See His Fire Cam Footage!

02:46
What does it take to save a dog's life? A Virginia firefighter searches through a burnt home until he finds a dog named Roxy lying unconscious behind a sofa. He immediately scoops her up and takes her outside, where the rest of the team helps resuscitate her with oxygen masks. Thanks to the fire department's efforts, Roxy—along with her "sister," Daisy—was safely evacuated from the home and examined by a veterinarian. They continue to recover. A few days after their rescue, PETA presented Abingdon Volunteer Fire & Rescue with a Compassionate Fire Department Award—and the video shows the firefighters reunited with the dogs. Joe the Chimpanzee's Epic Rescue | PETA Animal Rescues

02:12
Joe was imprisoned in this squalid cage at this decrepit roadside zoo for 17 years. When he was young, he was taught to perform tricks by notorious Hollywood animal trainer Steve Martin, who has a long history of dumping chimpanzees in roadside zoos when they grow up and get too strong to be controlled. And that’s what happened to Joe. He was dumped at The Mobile Zoo, where he was confined to a tiny, rusted cage, isolated and alone. PETA has been working to free Joe for years, and in 2016, we succeeded. Joe was finally released and, with the help of Save the Chimps sanctuary, we were able to take him to his wonderful new home. At the sanctuary, he will have the opportunity to learn to be part of a family and finally has enough space to climb and explore like a real chimpanzee. Rescued Dog Sees New Home for the First Time | PETA Animal Rescues

02:40
Cora spent years chained in a backyard, but thanks to PETA, she'll never be neglected again. PETA's fieldworkers first met Cora when she was just 6 months old, chained outside 24/7. We persuaded her family to let us get her spayed, and we checked on her year after year to make sure that she had food, water, and adequate shelter, including fresh straw bedding in the winter, and to give her treats and some much-needed affection. But one day, the family disappeared and Cora was gone. Months later, in December 2014, a PETA fieldworker was checking on dogs at an unrelated address, when she found five dogs chained up outside—and one of them was Cora! While the fieldworker was giving the dogs food, water, and straw bedding, she discovered that the chain wrapped around Cora's neck was so tight that it had become embedded in her skin. After that, PETA was finally able to obtain custody of Cora and get her the care she needed. She spent several months in foster care at the home of the PETA fieldworker who rescued her, and then we were able to find her a loving home, where she'll never have to see another chain again. Rescue of Iris the Chimpanzee | PETA Animal Rescues

A 32-year-old chimpanzee named Iris was being held all alone in a tiny, barren, and dark cell at a roadside zoo called Chestatee Wildlife Preserve & Zoo in Georgia. Iris often smeared her own feces on the walls of the cell and spent almost all her time huddled under a dirty blanket. But in March 2015, a generous PETA member helped us free Iris from this hellhole. Following negotiations, Iris was quickly sent on her way to the beautiful Save the Chimps sanctuary in Florida! Iris is thriving at Save the Chimps and was introduced to her next-door neighbor, Abdul, within days of arriving at the sanctuary. Britches' Story: Eyes Sewn Shut | Baby Monkey Abused for Animal Testing

02:15
Britches was an infant monkey at the University of California–Riverside who was torn from his mother shortly after birth, had his eyes sewn shut, and had an electronic sonar device attached to him that let out a constant screeching sound. In 1985, activists rescued hundreds of animals being used in cruel experiments at the university, including cats, rabbits, and mice—and, of course, Britches. He was found alone in a barren metal cage, clutching a crude laboratory contraption that was intended to serve as a surrogate mother. With his sight restored and with the care and compassion of his rescuers, Britches grew healthier, inquisitive, and even playful—he no longer had neurotic episodes, and his trauma was fading. Once Britches was deemed ready, he was transferred to a sanctuary and was soon adopted by a real monkey mother. 2 cups wheat gluten 5 Tbsp. nutritional yeast 3 tsp. onion powder 2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. poultry seasoning 5 Tbsp. tahini 1/2 + 1/3 cup hot sauce 6 cups vegetable broth 2–3 cups white flour 1 tsp. garlic powder 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/4 tsp. chipotle powder 3/4 tsp. white pepper 1/4 tsp. paprika Egg replacer equivalent of 3 eggs (Namaste brand works well) 1 Tbsp. yellow mustard Vegetable oil, for frying In a large mixing bowl, add the wheat gluten, nutritional yeast, 2 teaspoonfuls of onion powder, 1 teaspoonful of salt, and the poultry seasoning and mix together until well combined. In a separate bowl, whisk together the tahini, 1/2 cup hot sauce, and 1 cup vegetable broth. Add the wet mixture to the dry mixture and stir until a thick dough forms, then knead with your hands for 2 to 4 minutes. It should be somewhat elastic. You may need to add more wheat gluten if it's too wet. Divide into 10 equal pieces and shape into patties. Pour the remaining vegetable broth, enough to just cover the patties, into a large pot and bring to a boil. Add the patties and boil for 45 minutes to 1 hour, then drain. Set aside to cool or run under cold water until cool enough to work with. In a medium-size bowl, add the remaining onion powder, remaining salt, flour, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, chipotle powder, white pepper, and paprika and mix until well combined. In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining hot sauce, vegan egg replacer, and mustard. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot over medium-high heat. Coat one patty in the flour mixture, then dip in the "egg" mixture. Let the excess liquid drip off before placing back in the flour mixture. Gently roll in the flour mixture until evenly coated. Repeat with the remaining patties. Place 2 to 4 patties in the oil. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Place on a paper towel–lined plate. Repeat with the remaining patties. 370,000 Reasons to Spay and Neuter | An Animated Short

01:44
Should you really spay or neuter your cat or dog? What difference does one animal make? A lot, actually: One female cat and her offspring can pave the way to the births of 370,000 cats in just seven years! Spaying and neutering is the single best thing that you can do to help solve the dog and cat overpopulation crisis. Spaying and neutering procedures are routine and affordable and can prevent hundreds of thousands of animals from being born into a world that tragically has no place for them. "Fixed" animals also live longer and are far less likely to develop (or are immune from) certain types of cancer and other diseases, and neutered males are less likely to run off. Communities spend millions of dollars coping with the dog and cat overpopulation crisis. The one-time cost of spaying or neutering is far lower than the expense involved in rounding up strays, feeding and housing abandoned animals, and euthanizing those for whom homes can't be found. To find a low-cost spay/neuter clinic near you, call 1-800-248-SPAY, and for help getting spay and neuter ordinances enacted in your community, check out PETA's free guide to passing animal-friendly legislation: http://www.peta.org/action/activism-guide/passing-legislation/. Sevierville, TN Bear Rescue

04:14
Thanks to Sam Simon's generosity, PETA has rescued two Himalayan black bears who were illegally imported into Tennessee by the owner of Three Bears General Store, a tourist trap in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, that confines bears to decrepit concrete pits. PETA submitted a complaint to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency after learning that the bears were being confined to concrete and chain-link cages in a residential backyard. The agency investigated and charged the owner with illegally importing the bears into the state and struck a plea deal that secured the surrender of the two bears for retirement to a sanctuary and sought PETA's help rehoming the bears. Three Bears' owner claimed that he had acquired the bears, a male and a female, in order to breed them and stated that he would take any cubs away from their mother as soon as possible after birth. Because the female bear may be pregnant, PETA arranged for the bears to be moved from Tennessee to Colorado as soon as possible so that she will have the opportunity to give birth in a cozy den. Meanwhile, PETA continues to advocate in behalf of the remaining bears at Three Bears General Store and hopes to help send them to a sanctuary as well. Rescued Bears Are Thriving One Year Later

01:39
It's been a year since two bears named Ben and Bogey were rescued from Tregembo Animal Park in North Carolina and moved to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado—and they have been thriving in their new sanctuary home. Ben once suffered from untreated facial lesions that left him with scarring on both corneas, and suffered from painful arthritis that prevented him from entering his pool. Now, Ben receives expert veterinary treatment and has been able to splash and play in a pond and explore and forage in the grass. Bogey once paced incessantly, obsessively licked her paw, and bit at the bars of her cage—all signs of extreme psychological distress—but now, she no longer engages in any of these behaviors and she has been able to swim and even bob for apples at her leisure.
