The Real "Ma" and "Pa": 20 Rare and Amazing Vintage Photographs That Show What The People From ‘Little House On The Prairie’ Really Looked Like: The Little House on the Prairie books series is a children’s literature classic that’s not only entertaining, but provides a unique snapshot of life in the Midwestern United States at a time when that area was rapidly changing. Little House on the Prairie has a special place in the hearts of Americans and many others around the world. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s stories, based on her real-life experience of growing up amid the hardships of the Midwest during the late 19th century, have struck a chord with generations of readers and viewers. Though the book series and the popular TV show based on it are fictional, they draw heavily on author Laura Ingalls Wilder’s real life and family. Take a look at these rare photos of the people behind the timeless stories... 1. 1860: The Real "Ma" and "Pa" Charles and Caroline Ingalls, the original "Ma" and "Pa" from Little House on the Prairie, on their wedding day on February 1, 1860. Charles was born in 1836 and spent the majority of his youth in the tallgrass prairie of Campton Township, just west of Elgin, Illinois. He met and quickly married a 21-year old Caroline Lake Quiner, who was working as a schoolteacher at the time, and they made a home in Pepin County, Wisconsin. They had their first daughter, Mary Amelia, in January, 1865, followed by the birth of Laura in February, 1867. Despite being a high-spirited, outgoing man, Charles wasn't much for people, and he had an insatiable wanderlust. In 1869, before Laura was two years old, he packed up the family and moved to Missouri, then to a town near what is now Independence, Kansas, where their third daughter, Carrie, would be born in 1870. 2. Carrie, Mary, and Laura Ingalls, ca. 1882 From left to right: Carrie, Mary, and Laura Ingalls around 1882. Mary had lost her sight three years earlier. The young family would soon realize that the Kansas land wasn't open to settlers, so over the next few years, they spent time in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. Grace Pearl was born in May, 1877, and the family was struggling to make ends meet. In 1879, Charles accepted a job as a clerk and bookkeeper with the railroad in Dakota Territory, which sparked the move to the town of De Smet in 1880. The following winter's terrible storms and conditions would be the basis for the novel, The Long Winter. 3. Laura in De Smet, 1884 Laura in 1884 at age 17 Laura quickly got involved with life in the newly-formed (and growing) town of De Smet. She attended school, made friends, and obtained her teaching certificate, which enabled her to begin teaching in 1882, a full two months before her 16th birthday! At the same time, she began courting Almanzo Wilder, a young homesteader whom she called "Manly". Though 10 years her senior, Almanzo fell deeply in love with Laura and would drive her back and forth between De Smet and the town where se was teaching 12 miles away. They married in 1885 and settled on the Wilder's claim and began their life as farmers. 4. Laura and Almanzo, ca. 1885-86 Laura and Almanzo in their first year of marriage, likely 1885 or 1886. 5. The Ingalls Family in 1891 From left to right: Caroline ("Ma"), Carrie, Laura, Charles ("Pa"), Grace, and Mary. The family took 1890 and 1891 to rest and recover, and the photos from a studio session in 1891 shows that Laura was of good health and vitality at the end of her rest. 6. Laura in 1891 This early 1891 portrait of Laura captures that she had returned to good health. Almanzo still was struggling, but Laura helped them continue work, and they kept their ears to the ground for new opportunities. 7. Portrait of Laura and Almanzo, 1891 In October, 1891, Laura, Almanzo, and a young Rose traveled to Florida in hopes that the warm weather would be better for Almanzo's health and farming. You can tell from the photo above that Laura certainly didn't love it; indeed, she could barely tolerate the humidity and weather, and the family moved back to De Smet, South Dakota in August 1892. 8. Laura, ca. 1898 A young Laura Ingalls Wilder on the porch of her rented home in Mansfield, Missouri around 1898. After a short time back in De Smet after the disastrous trip to Florida, the family quickly made way to Mansfield, Missouri by covered wagon. Almanzo put a $100 down payment to buy 40 acres of hilly, rocky land that Laura would name "Rocky Ridge Farm". This farm would eventually be expanded and serve as the couple's home for the rest of their lives. Labels: 1800s, 1900s, 1910s, culture, famous people, life, portraits.

These Colorized Historical Photos Make The Past Seem VERY Real. Marina Amaral is fascinated with history; one way she is bringing the past back to life is with the use of Photoshop. Amaral restores old photos originally shot in black and white and gives them color. The artist researches the time, fashion, and even seeks professional experts in order for the images to look and feel as authentic as possible. Marina feels the new color updates changes our relationship to events. “It is a complex process able to transport us to anywhere. When we look at the photo in color, we can easily have the feeling that we are living that moment again,” explains Amaral. 1. A portrait of American actress and Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly. 2. A continuación hábitos que matan nuestras neuronas y las razones: 1. No Desayunar.

15 Only Surviving Photos Of Veterans of the Napoleonic Wars: In 1815, Napoléon Bonaparte and his Grande Armée were finally defeated during the Battle of Waterloo. Even after Napoléon’s death in 1821, the warriors who fought with him continued to revere him and pay their respects every 5th of May — the anniversary of his death. It was during one of these occasions that these photographs were taken, possibly in 1858, when these men were well into their 70s and 80s. These are their only surviving images. 1. 26 Beautiful Portraits of Native American Teen Girls From Between the 1870s and 1890s: The Native American Indians are an important part of the culture of the United States. While their people have lived on this land for thousands of years, today their numbers are dwindling. Once, the Native Americans lived on this continent with little discourse and disruption. They were well fed, content, and established. In fact, the men and women usually were placed in typical roles. Each of these beautiful portraits of Native American girls were taken from between the 1870s and 1890s. The images have been well preserved and it gives us a tiny window into the past where we can admire these women, their unique style, and show respect for their lives. Although Native American women often had different roles than the men they were greatly respected. They often had the same sorts of rights at the men in their tribe which is incredible for the time period. In some groups, women were the ones who owned the home and property inside. While it was typical for a chief to be male there were some tribes that would have the women select who he would be. Labels: 1800s, culture, girls, portraits, teenager

Awesome Portrait Photos of Rock Stars of the 1960s and 1970s at Home With Their Parents: They had fame, reams of money and fans willing to do wild, unmentionable things just to breathe the same air — but in its September 24, 1971 issue, LIFE magazine illustrated a different side of the lives of rock stars. Like other mere mortals, they often came from humble backgrounds, with moms and dads who bragged about them, fussed over them, called them on their nonsense and worried about them every single day. Assigned to take portraits of the artists at home with their sweetly square folks, photographer John Olson traveled from the suburbs of London to Brooklyn to the Bay Area, capturing in his work the love that bridged any cultural and generational divides that existed between his subjects. Here's a gallery of Rock legends -- Clapton, Zappa, Elton John, Grace Slick and more -- and their totally square, totally sweet parents. 1. Frank Zappa in his Los Angeles home with his dad, Francis, his mom, Rosemarie, and his cat in 1970. 2. The Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick poses with her mother, Virginia Wing, in the living room of the home where she grew up in Palo Alto, California in 1970. 3. In one of the photos that ultimately ran in LIFE (photographer John Olson went back to Palo Alto for a re-shoot), new mom Grace dangles her daughter China by the feet in 1971. 4. In 1970 Rose Clapp shows off her tea service and Eric Clapton, her rock-god guitarist grandson, Surrey, England. 5. The former Reggie Dwight, later known as Elton John, laughs with his mom Sheila Fairebrother and her husband Fred (whom he affectionately called "Derf," Fred spelled backwards) in their suburban London apartment in 1970. 6. David Crosby with his father, 1970. 7. Ginger Baker and his mum, 1970. 8. Ginger Baker, the Cream and Blind Faith drummer, flashes a rare smile with his mother Ruby Streatfield inside her rowhouse in Bexley, outside London, in 1970. 9. Joe Cocker with his mother, 1970. 10. Grace steps outside with her mom and little China in 1971. 11. Richie Havens with his parents, Brooklyn in 1970. 12. The Jackson 5 with their parents standing by, 13-year-old dynamo Michael (front left) and his brothers Jackie, Marlon, Tito and Jermaine straddle their motorbikes by the pool, 1970. 13. Scottish folk musician Donovan and his parents, Donald and Winifred Leitch, England in 1970. Labels: 1970s, culture, famous people, life, music, portraits

Photography provides a snapshot of what has happened in history. It captures events that have shaped the world we live in. Some of the images seize a moment of pure joy such as the end of World War II to proof that during Christmas Eve on December 24, 1914 German and English soldiers called for an unofficial truce until after Christmas Day. Some photographs also show the anguish of people during challenging times. The despair of Marilyn Lovell, wife Apollo 13’s commander Jim Lovell and a little girl holding her doll after a London bombing in 1940, are all too visceral reminders of the human condition. No matter what the subject is being photographed, images provide a glimpse into a time and place we may know little about, but they evoke powerful emotions within us as we all laugh, cry, and connect together. Furthermore, it is in photographs that we have the ability to gain immortality.

18 Candid Photographs of Freddie Mercury With His Boyfriend Jim Hutton in the Late 1980s: Freddie Mercury met Jim Hutton at a club in 1984 when he offered to buy Jim a drink, and he politely turned him down. Jim didn’t recognize Freddie but a few months later while at a restaurant his friend told him: “Hey, Freddie Mercury is behind you.” Jim this time accepted Mercury’s drink and the two talked for a while, but nothing happened for another year. About eighteen months later, the two happened to meet again at the same club. Freddie once again bought Jim a drink and this time they got together. Jim ended up moving in the Garden Lodge with Freddie about two years later. When Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987, he offered Jim an exit on their relationship. He told Jim he would understand if he left. In a Freddie Mercury documentary, Jim recalls telling him, “I love you, Freddie - I’m not going anywhere.” And he didn’t; Jim stayed with Freddie until he died. He nursed him, cared for him, and was there when he took his last breath. Upon his death, Freddie left Jim £500,000 as well as a plot of land at Rutland Terrace, Carlow where he built a house. Jim Hutton died in 2010 from a form of lung cancer. He had then been living with HIV for over 20 years. Labels: 1980s, famous people, life, love, portraits

OLD PHOTOS OF STUDIO 54, Decadence Never Looked So Fabulous.
It's a legendary nightclub with as much intrigue surrounding it as the late seventies itself: It was a time when art, culture, music, and nightlife came together in a perfect storm of (often) drug-fueled disco dancing and depravity. Owned by entrepreneur Steve Rubell, the club had a reputation for getting down and dirty, all the while hosting some of the era's most famous faces. Crowds linger outside the entrance to Studio 54, which was at one point Manhattan's most popular nightclub. Andy Warhol and his crew frequented Studio 54 in its heyday. Designer Diane von Furstenberg appears on the floor looking ravishing. Actor and comedian Robin Williams dances with his wife, Valerie Velardin in 1979. Dame Rollerena, drag queen who skated the streets of New York, doing her thing at Studio 54. Singer Bette Midler greets The Temptations, who were at Studio 54 to celebrate their new recording contract. Dancer Rudolf Nureyev initiates nine-year-old Ricky Schroder, a brand new movie star, into the Studio 54 dance club. An unidentified woman whispers in the ear of British rock star Elton John. A general view of the dance floor as club patrons forget their worries and dance the night away. A typically attired busboy at Studio 54 in New York, clearing drinks on his head. Purple-caped dancers hitting the floor, sometime in 1977. Singing star Diana Ross and comedian Richard Pryor cutting a rug at the club. Calvin Klein, Brooke Shields and Steve Rubell pictured at a Calvin Klein party hosted by the club in 1978. Bianca Jagger and companion hit the Studio 54 dance floor in 1977. Farrah Fawcett dancing with Richard Barrie, president of Faberge. Jack Ford, son of former President Gerald Ford, sharing secrets with Alice Cooper in a dark corner of the club. American actors Sylvester Stallone and actress Joyce Ingalls getting cozy at Studio 54 in 1978. Muhammad Ali getting all the attention at the club in 1978. Young actress Tatum O’Neal getting a little lift from dancer Sterling Saint Jacque on the dance floor of Studio 54. Fashion designer Valentino dressed as a ringmaster and hanging with Brazilian model Dalma in 1978. Rock star Elton John is shown and actress Stockard Channing at New York’s Studio 54, celebrating the release of Channing's movie, Grease. John F. Kennedy Jr. trying to avoid photographers when leaving Studio 54 in 1978. In 1978, the IRS seized the books of Studio 54, and the owners were charged with tax evasion. It was the beginning of the end for the legendary club.

20 Rare Vintage Photos of Christmas from the Victorian Era: It's hard to imagine now, but at the beginning of the 19th century Christmas was hardly celebrated. Many businesses did not even consider it a holiday. However by the end of the century it had become the biggest annual celebration and took on the form that we recognize today. The transformation happened quickly, and came from all sectors of society. Many attribute the change to Queen Victoria, and it was her marriage to the German-born Prince Albert that introduced some of the most prominent aspects of Christmas. In 1848 the Illustrated London News published a drawing of the royal family celebrating around a decorated Christmas tree, a tradition that was reminiscent of Prince Albert's childhood in Germany. Soon every home in Britain had a tree bedecked with candles, sweets, fruit, homemade decorations and small gifts. 1. A family’s Christmas, 1897. 2. The Night Before Christmas, 1898. 3. Faces of Century: These Photos of People When They Were Young and At 100 Will Leave You Amazed! So many things change when a person ages. Wrinkles, changing hairlines, graying hair, the list goes on... But one thing that always stays the same is a person's identity. For his photo project called Faces of Century, photographer Jan Langer captured over a dozen Czech centenarians and compared their pictures of when they were young, and when they were over 100 years old. “How these people see their life after such a period? The majority of those I approached agree that with advancing age life is faster; until, at last, the life will pass in a moment,” Langer says. “Time is shrinking, as are the faces of the elders. I wondered what changes and what remains on a human face and in a human mind in such a long time, and in such a short while in relative terms. I wondered how much loneliness of the old age weighs, and what memories stay in 100-year-old mind.” This set of comparative photos (of archive portraits from the family album and contemporary portraits from the present time) explores the similarities and the differences in appearance and in physiognomy. The characteristics of personality change throughout life but it seems as if individual nature remains rooted in the abyss of time. 1. Marie Burešová, 23 Years Old (Wedding), 101 Years Old. 2. Each of us are the centers of our own universe. However, if you take a minute and consider the fact that millions of people came before you, and millions of people will come after you, suddenly, your universe is enormous, and you might actually feel quite small. Don't think about it too much - it might freak you out. History forces people to examine themselves in that way, and that's what makes it so interesting. These 37 historical photographs are certainly compelling, but what we're grateful for is the fact that they encourage us to think about our lives in a totally different way - all of our little pictures are all part of one enormous picture **- #29 might still influence you today.

Rare Photographs Vol. 51 (39 photos): Human history is truly a swinging pendulum of ups and downs. The centuries have been sprinkled with both terrible, bleak events, and beautiful hopeful moments. Since the invention of the photograph, those events and moments have been recorded for us, allowing us a window into a time that we never actually got to see for ourselves. #historyofart #HistoryNerd #historyinpictures #historylover #historybuff #HistoryInTheMaking #historychannel #historyvikings #HistoryLesson #historygeek #historymemes #historytv18 #historytv18india #historymade #HistoryMuseum #HistoryMakers #history4u #historychannelindia #historytour #historylovers #HIStoryEra #historybooks #historybook #historyteacher #HistoryMaker #historyplace #historyearned #historyphoto #historyhunters #historyworldwar2 #historyclass #historychannelvikings #historytime #HistoryPorn #historyofarchitecture #historygram #historyoffashion #HistoryPics #historyofmedicine #historyiscool #historyart #historyofindia #historybuilding #historycity #historyofwhoo #historyandpics #historyphotographed #historyrocks #historycar #historyofcinema #vintage #vintagestyle #vintagefashion #vintageshop #vintageclothing #vintagecar #vintagedecor #vintagelove #vintageinspired #vintagehome #VintageCars #VintageFurniture #VintageWedding #vintagejewelry #vintageforsale #vintagewatch #vintagedress #vintagelife #vintagefinds #vintagestore #vintagelook #vintagebag #vintagetoys #vintagephoto #vintagegirl #vintagelover #vintageclothes #vintagehair #vintagebike #vintagephotography #vintagemotorcycle #vintagechristmas #vintagewatches #VintageShopping #vintagerolex #vintagecamera #vintagedesign #vintagebooks #vintagesale #vintagetshirt #vintageguitar #vintageart #vintagelens #vintagetee #vintagemarket #vintagekitchen #vintagebride #vintageracing #VintageShirt #vintagefabric

Regressão a Vidas Passadas - Brian Weiss (Português)

Here Are The Highly Surprising Rules That Pirates Actually Used To Live By: By and large, the modern person doesn’t live a very thrilling life. They go to work, they go home, they sleep the weekend away, and then they start the whole cycle all over again on Monday. But things weren’t always that way. Back in as early as the 16th century, pirates roamed the high seas, robbing and plundering with zestful abandon. For a pirate, every single day was an adventure and every day could be their last. Having an adventurous life didn’t mean that they were lawless, however. Pirates lived by a very serious code and when you see what they wouldn’t stand for, you’ll be super surprised. 1. Rank has its privileges: Any time a group of pirates returned from plundering some scallawags, all of the loot (or booty, if you will) was collected and counted. Once a total was recorded it would be divided and distributed to the men. The size of their portion was directly determined by the rank they held on the vessel. 2. One man, one vote: Every man regardless of their rank on the ship, got a vote of “affairs of the moment” and that included the appointment of the ship’s officers. Once the votes were counted, that was that. That didn’t mean the ship was a democracy when it came to punishment, though. The captain determined that sort of thing. 3. Food and drink for all: When you’re at sea, rations of food and water are critical. That’s why, according to the pirate code, any and all food and water were divided up equally between the men. This also went for any alcohol they found, because if there was one thing they valued more than staying alive, it was staying drunk. 4. Theft is punishable by death or marooning: Once a ship had been successfully plundered, the men were allowed to take any and all personal items they liked from the ship. However, anything like gold or jewelry had to go into the common pot. Get caught slipping something shiny in your pocket and prepare to pay the price. 5. No fighting allowed: Fighting among pirates was strictly forbidden while you were on the ship. Violate this, and get 40 lashes courtesy of the captain. Most disputes between pirates were settled once they got to shore where swords and guns were fair play. 6. Keep your arms ready: Just because you weren’t allowed to fight with each other on board, that didn’t mean that there was no fighting in a pirate’s life. Thanks to their frequent attacks on unsuspecting vessels, every pirate was expected to have a cleaned and loaded pistol at the ready in addition to a well-sharpened blade. 7. Workmen’s compensation: If you lost a limb while doing your pirate duty you would be compensated with 800 pieces of “eight.” At the time, a piece of eight was worth 1/8th of a dollar. That makes $100 for losing a leg or an arm. Accounting for inflation, that is about $2,954.77, so… still not a lot for the loss of a body part. 8. No sex on board: It didn’t matter if women or men were your partners of choice, you were not allowed to sneak people onto the ship for the purposes of engaging in coitus. If you were caught doing so, your punishment would be left up to the Captain. 9. Everybody fights: While fighting with other crew members was frowned upon, when the pirates went into battle, everyone fought. If you didn’t and were deemed cowardly, the crew voted on your punishment, which ranged from losing your share of the next pot of treasure to death. 10. No gambling: While we often think of pirates as being passionate gamblers, none was allowed on the ship itself. Any and all games of cards and dice were reserved for the times when they got off the boat and had a chance to spend the money they had worked so hard to earn.

Vintage Bad Girl Mugshots from between the 1940s and 1960s: From murderers, thieves and hookers, these are the faces of the many who were captured on camera at the lowest points of their lives. And while many people would say mugshots of the past hold a certain curiosity, one man confesses what started as an initial fascination turned into an obsession. Mark Michaelson has collected more than 10,000 photographs of men and women of all races and ages, taken after their run-ins with the law. The New York-based art director and graphic designer said he has always been drawn to 'Wanted' posters, but noted when he came across his first mugshot, 'it was love at first sight,' according to Collectors Weekly.
