Surviving hyperinflation in Venezuela

Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/YouTubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN Imagine living in a country where prices double every few weeks and a monthly salary of three million Bolívares isn’t enough to buy meat for one family meal. That’s the situation in Venezuela where the government is knocking five zeroes off the refurbished Bolívar in a desperate attempt to control hyperinflation. The Bolívar Soberano (Sovereign Bolívar), is anchored to the cryptocurrency, the Petro, which was launched earlier this year. In May 2018, Nicolas Maduro was re-elected president in a vote deemed by the EU and the US to be unfair. He promised to focus on boosting the economy, but Venezuelans are yet to see their lives improve. Families who only a few years ago went on holiday to Miami can no longer afford decent food and basic medication. France 24 reporter Claire Paccalin has been in Caracas finding out how Venezuelans are trying to adapt and survive from day to day. Video: The Foreign Legion, another French exception

21:10
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN Shrouded in mystery and prestige, the French Foreign Legion is just as feared by its enemies as it is envied by its allies. The legionnaires come from across the world, prepared to fight for a country that is not even their own. In the Legion, they learn to fight in extreme conditions, live together and work as a team. But who are these soldiers and what motivates them? While embedded with the 13th Half-Brigade of the Foreign Legion in Mali, our reporters found out. “The Legion is our home” is the motto of the Foreign Legion, the legendary elite branch of the French Army. Africans, Americans, Asians, Europeans, anyone between 17 and 40 years old can sign up to fight for France. The Legion was formed in 1831 and, to this day, inspires fascination. From the very start, it earned a reputation for being an army made up of wanted criminals. Today though, the Legion says entry is forbidden to anyone linked to violent crimes, sexual assault or drug-trafficking. However, the Legion still gives a chance to those who want to leave their pasts behind, earn a living and serve in an army with one of the best reputations in the world. Only one in five hopefuls makes it through the notoriously tough selection tests and once they’re in, the Legionnaires have to agree to a strict set of rules if they are to stay in. They’re punished if they fail to learn French and misunderstand orders. Claire Paccalin and Fanny Allard followed the 13th Half-Brigade of the Foreign Legion at their French base and during a counter-terrorism operation in Mali. They spent six days camping out in the desert near the border with Niger to find out how the Legion works and what motivates these men to fight for a country that is not their own. Maxime, an 18-year-old Belgian, told them why he quit a carpentry apprenticeship to join the Legion. They spoke to Brandon, an American who drives his comrades crazy by playing country music at the barracks. Then there's Sergeant Giacomo, who started out camera-shy but later opened up about being a Legionnaire. http://www.france24.com/en/reporters Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

Paris arrondissements: Smashing the snail

Subscribe to France 24 now : http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN FRENCH CONNECTIONS – Thurs. 18.02.16: This week, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo caused quite a stir. She presented City Council with a controversial plan to change the capital’s administrative organisation. Currently, Paris has 20 arrondissements, or administrative districts, which spiral out of the centre like a snail’s shell. Hidalgo wants to smash the snail. She wants to merge the first four arrondissements, Paris’s smallest and least populated, into one super arrondissement. The mayor says this will make Paris more democratic and efficient. Critics on the right accuse her of political and electoral manipulation. They say Hidalgo is trying to secure long-term Socialist domination by reducing the number of arrondissement mayors from centrist or conservative parties and turning Paris into a giant "bobo" paradise.  Visit our website : http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel : http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter : https://twitter.com/France24_en

But in reality, the stereotype of lazy French workers attached to their 35-hour week is an exaggeration. Introduced in 2000 to boost job creation, the 35-hour working week remains a deeply divisive issue here in France. The right wing and business representatives say it’s the root cause of France’s economic woes. Defenders say it’s improved the well-being of workers and productivity. In this special edition of the show, we focus on that crash and the slow climb back to normal. We look back at the economic crisis with Adam Tooze, the author of "Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World". September 15 marks the ten-year anniversary of what became known as "Lehman Weekend", when US investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed in the thick of the 2008 subprime mortgage meltdown. It was the biggest bankruptcy in US history, leading up to the world's worst economic crisis since the 1930s Great Depression. After the peak of the 2008 financial crisis, millions of people lost their jobs and many also lost their homes. More than three million foreclosures took place in the US, and many more around the world. http://www.france24.com/en/taxonomy/emission/18023 Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Akufo-Addo said African nations have a "responsibility" to help create opportunities for their citizens at home. "We have a responsibility to our young people… to create the conditions that will make sure that they see opportunity in their own countries of birth and origin", Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo told FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman. "I don’t think anybody will cross the Sahara and go to these rickety boats in the Mediterranean because they want to. They feel a certain compulsion to do so because at home, the opportunities that they’re looking for are not there", he added. http://www.france24.com/en/taxonomy/emission/18004 Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

Video: Millions of single Chinese men desperately seeking a wife

26:08
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN In China, the one-child policy has wreaked havoc. By encouraging the birth of boys rather than girls, an imbalance of the sexes has emerged. China now counts far more men than women. Millions of these men, now of marriageable age, are desperately seeking a wife - and they will do anything to try to find one, even if it means buying one abroad or even kidnapping a woman. Marjolaine Grappe and Christophe Barreyre tell us more in this documentary. The Chinese call them "Guang gun", "dead branches" which will never bear fruit. In short, men condemned to a life without a wife, without children, and without the hope of one day starting a family. In China, there are already millions of these bachelors in search of a soulmate and their ranks are swelling. Ten years ago, there was talk of the "curse of being born a girl". As a result of the one-child policy – in force until 2015 - millions of little girls were killed before they were born or just afterwards. Sometimes they were abandoned shortly after their birth. Most families preferred to give birth to a boy, so that he could carry on the family line. ►► Also watch our report: "China's second child flop" It turned out to be a demographic time bomb. Today, the “curse” has backfired on these boys, who are now men. According to forecasts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, one in five men will be unable to find a wife by 2020. China will have a surplus of 30 to 40 million men under the age of 19. That’s the equivalent of the entire population of young men in the United States. Trafficking of women In some regions, "single villages" have emerged. The few women who were there have left the area to look for a rich husband in town. So men who want a chance to get married have to move to other regions. Millions of young men flock to the south of the country and work day and night in the factories of the Pearl Delta, "the workshop of the world", while hoping to find a soulmate. But even here, women are in short supply. In desperation, some Chinese men prefer to run away or buy a woman abroad, often from Burma, Vietnam or Indonesia... Others give up. For some, anything goes, even if it means enlisting the help of traffickers and kidnapping a woman. We went to meet single men who are crushed by the mathematical impossibility of finding a spouse and prepared to do anything not to end up alone. They agreed to speak to us and to take us to the heart of this unlikely trafficking operation. A report by Marjolaine Grappe and Christophe Barreyre / Orientxpress Production.
