Breaking News - Wellington Albert has counselling after Kato Ottio's death

02:43
Wellington Albert is receiving counselling ahead of his move to Super League following the sudden death of his former team-mate Kato Ottio.Albert was due to fly to England with Ottio on Thursday to take up his contract with Widnes but is now set to delay his departure as he comes to terms with the tragic news that rocked the game of rugby league.Ottio, 23, who was signed by the Vikings after helping Papua New Guinea reach the quarter-finals of the 2017 World Cup, passed away at the Pacific International Hospital in Port Moresby in the early hours of Tuesday morning local time after collapsing due to a 'sudden health issue' during an eight-kilometre road run with his former PNG Hunters team-mates.'He called up and said he wanted to come and train with us,' Hunters and Kumuls coach Michael Marum told NRL.com.'He collapsed and was taken up to the hospital but they couldn't help him. Wellington didn't train but he went to the hospital. All the players were there. It was emotional.'Footage was posted in PNG of Marum and the Hunters players wearing their 2017 grand final T-shirts at a gathering outside Ottio's family house, from where his body was taken to a funeral home. The players were clearly distraught and Marum said many of them would need support, including Albert, who was due to share a house in Widnes with Ottio.'We will make sure Wellington is in the right mind before he leaves here,' Marum said. 'Currently his mind is not right so we are trying to give him assistance. Not only Wellington but the other players as well.'Widnes coach Denis Betts said he was yet to speak to Albert but the club would do whatever was necessary to support the former Penrith Panthers prop.Club officials had been furnishing the house Ottio and Albert were going to share when they learned of the sudden death of the Kumuls speedster, who played all four of his country's matches at the 2017 World Cup.'I am still in shock,' Betts told NRL.com. 'I spoke to him on Saturday and he was excited about coming to play for us.'It's hard to believe because we had just got bedding and other things like crockery today for the place where he and Wellington were going to live.'To get this news is devastating, and our thoughts are with his family.'Ottio made 32 appearances for the Hunters before signing for Canberra in 2016 and scored 29 tries in 23 matches for their feeder club, Mounties.Canberra coach Ricky Stuart said: 'Receiving the devastating news this morning knocked me for six. It was hard to believe given the age of Kato and how I remembered him here, I am really lost for words.'Kato was an important part of our club and very close mate to all our boys and staff.' Breaking News - Ronaldinho's son joins Cruzeiro... but tried to 'HIDE identity'

02:13
Ronaldinho's son attempted to hide his identity during his trial with Brazilian side Cruzerio. The Brazilian icon's son, Joao Mendes, is just 13 but has been making waves while progressing through the youth ranks. He trialled with Paris Saint-Germain, one of his father's many clubs, at their training base in the Brazilian capital Brasilia before trying out for Cruzeiro, whose senior side play in the top flight. But, according to Brazilian outlet Globoesporte, Mendes wanted to gain his place in the side through meritocracy, rather than the club's top brass selecting him due to his father's name. Globo, who appear to have blown Mendes' cover, claim the youngster 'charmed the scouts' during his trial there but owing to the fact he is just 13, he is too young to sign a contract. Mendes is the son Janaina Nattielle Mendes, a former dancer who was married to the Barcelona great in 2004, but their marriage only lasted for two years and ended in 2007. His mother, however, is reportedly the one who decides Joao's future. The Cruzeiro trainee certainly appears to have been passed on some of his father's otherworldly footballing talent. Indeed, it is a story to keep a close eye on. Breaking News - Terens Puhiri might be the fastest player in he world

03:00
Terens Puhiri started this week as an anonymous footballer plying his trade in the Indonesian First Division for Borneo FC, but that is set to change after footage of his latest goal went viral. The 21-year-old's strike against Mitra Kukar has been causing a stir on social media because of the dramatic pace he displays in the process.Starting well in his own half, Puhiri goes from a standing start to tapping to ball into the opposition's net in under ten seconds. It was enough evidence for many Twitter users to speculate whether he may be the fastest player in world football. Not only does he display incredible pace, Puhiri also shows composure to knock it past the last defender and even evades the goalkeeper's desperate attempt to bring him down before passing the ball into an empty net.Owing to a lack of technology in Indonesian football, we may never know exactly how fast Puhiri ran on his way to scoring Borneo's third goal of the evening, but video evidence suggests he may have beaten the Premier League's fastest ever player, Leroy Sane. The Manchester City player was clocked at a top speed of 35.48 kilometres per hour (22.05 mph) earlier this season, which was the fastest time ever recorded in England's top flight. To put that in perspective, at that sustained speed Sane would finish a 100 metre sprint in a smidgen over 10 seconds, a time only world-class sprinters can achieve. And let's not forget that his record was set on grass rather than an athletics track.Puhiri may have a long way to go before he is being compared to Sane in other aspects of his game, but there will no doubt be some scouts from European clubs making their way to Borneo FC as we speak. Breaking News - Pitch is laid at Tottenham's new stadium

02:41
Breaking News - Pitch is laid at Tottenham's new stadium #Tottenhams, #new, #stadium, #moves, #big, #step, #closer, #completion, #pitch, #laid Tottenham's new stadium has taken an enormous step towards completion with the delivery of the new pitch. The rolls of turf, which have been imported from Holland, arrived at the start of the week and are now being meticulously laid out as the new White Hart Lane arena begins to look more like home. Such is the club's attention to detail, members of the groundstaff have been based out in Holland for the past two months to ensure the surface arrived in pristine condition. The pitch is a hybrid of natural grass reinforced with polypropylene strands and is very similar to the playing surface at the old White Hart Lane. In an indication of the immense logistical operation involved, the turf is being transported to London in 23 refrigerated lorries over the next three days. Each roll of turf weighs 1.5 tonnes and has dimensions of 2.4m wide by 12m long. Specialised equipment is needed to unroll each strip of turf, with the club's webcams at the stadium showing work starting from the outside and then working into the centre. It will take up to four weeks for the turf to properly bed in and keeps Spurs on target to move into their new 62,062-capacity home for their Premier League fixture against Burnley on December 15. Earlier in the summer, three retractable trays were installed beneath the pitch. They will slide back underneath the stadium's south stand when NFL games are played on an artificial surface that has been placed underneath the grass. The last week of September saw the safe standing rails and seats installed into the home end of the stadium. Spurs were originally meant to move into the £850million stadium back in August but a series of delays pushed this back as they continued to play the bulk of their home fixtures at Wembley. They even had to play their third round Carabao Cup tie against Watford at Stadium MK last week. Spurs will be back at Wembley on Wednesday night when they host Barcelona in the Champions League. Breaking News - Crystal Palace reveal plans for Selhurst Park development

03:20
Crystal Palace have unveiled eye-catching plans for a £100million redevelopment of their Selhurst Park ground, increasing capacity to over 34,000 with a new five-storey stand with a glass facade. The south London club plan to transform their home since 1924 into a state-of-the-art arena within the next three years with the proposal set to be submitted to Croydon Council in January.Palace have enlisted stadium architects KSS, the firm behind the redevelopment of Anfield, Twickenham and Wimbledon, to make their plans a reality, with the cost estimated to fall between £75m and £100m.The centrepiece will be a new main stand, whose increased capacity from 5,400 to more than 13,500 will boost the overall capacity of the ground from its present 26,000 to more than 34,000.It will feature an all-glass exterior inspired by the design of the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition Hall, with a central vaulted arch featuring the club's eagle crest in gold. The roof of the new stand, which will also contain hospitality and entertainment facilities for more than 2,500 spectators, is intended to funnel noise down towards the Arthur Wait Stand opposite. The new stand will also contain a new club museum and accommodate an expansion of the pitch to make Selhurst Park compliant with UEFA regulations and able to stage tournament football.Palace chairman Steve Parish said: 'We need a stadium that reflects who we are, how far we have come and where we want to go - a stadium that South London can be proud of, a home worthy of our incredible support and unique atmosphere and this great Premier League we represent.'We have worked long and hard and looked at several options over the years, including returning to the original site of Crystal Palace, which wasn't viable.'While we can't go back to it, we can build a new one and today I am proud, in conjunction with our partners KSS, to introduce a new Selhurst Park with a new Crystal Palace for a new era.'We are creating a new home worthy of our Club, our supporters and our community, and a celebration of our 112 years in South London.'The club will submit their plans to Croydon Council in January and, assuming planning permission is granted, construction work would begin within 12 months and be completed within three years.Palace say the existing main stand will remain fully operational during that time, meaning attendances can remain the same.Palace are the latest London club to announce a major redevelopment of their stadium, with Tottenham's rebuild of White Hart Lane underway and Chelsea's transformation of Stamford Bridge due in the next few years. Breaking News - Liverpool chief reveals Anfield expansion plans

02:11
Liverpool still retain plans to develop the Anfield Road End and convert their home into a 60,000-seater stadium, according to chief executive Peter Moore. The Main Stand was developed in 2016 to add 10,000 seats to the club's home, but plans to further develop the ground have yet to take shape. But Moore insists the club have not given up hope of taking capacity beyond the current 54,074.He told Sky Sports:' As you know we have a permit for the Anfield Road end for September 2019 to add maybe another 6,000 seats which will bring us up to 60,000 here.'I also know from living here, for every Liverpool ticket there is 10 people who want to buy it.'We totally get what we need to do. We're going to do what we did with the Main Stand as an operating group, which is look at what we need to do in a measured manner.'Moore understands the need for Liverpool to keep pace with their Premier League rivals, with Tottenham set to move into their new 61,000 capacity stadium next season. At just under 55,000, Anfield's size still trails that of Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal. He added: 'We'll look at what investment the ownership needs to put in. We're a fan-first organisation, I can re-assure people we're going to look at this on top of everything else we are doing.'As you know, we're leaving Melwood, we're consolidating to Kirkby, and we're focusing on using our capital very wisely and yes, we're looking very closely at Anfield Road expansion.' Breaking News - Woman wins £574,278.41 from £1 football accumulator bet

03:13
A woman with little interest in football has managed to win £574,278.41 from a £1 accumulator bet.The unnamed 58-year-old housewife put together a 12-team football accumulator, which she only bets on because she is sick of having to deal with her husband and son watching football on television every weekend. Most of the teams selected on the betting slip were odds against outsiders. And one of the results only came in during the 92nd minute as Steve Cook scored for Bournemouth at Newcastle. There was no skill or knowledge involved in the selection process either. Her son read out the weekend's fixtures and the woman picked 12 teams from the sound of their name alone.Carli Faulkner, the employee from William Hill's Leysdown-on-Sea shop who paid out the bet, said she was delighted for the winner.Faulkner told The Metro: 'It is incredible that the lady got them all up. Usually customers laugh when they see a payout figure on the bottom of their slip like £574,000, but this just goes to show it can happen.'They will be having a cracking Christmas and I am delighted for them as it's real girl power landing a bet like that. My biggest ever payout before this was around £25,000.'William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: 'Apparently, the lady's husband had been doing the £1 weekend acca since he was 18, so 40 years of practice on football punting.'His wife started doing the same bet about six years ago, so she certainly had lady luck on her side as her hubby has never had a win anything like that.'It just goes to show if you can't beat them join them and the payout in this case is absolutely fantastic.'We wish them well.'In my 15 years in the business working for William Hill I have never encountered a bigger football win by a female punter for just a quid.' Breaking News - West Indies batsman Shai Hope was schooled in East Sussex

05:44
AutoNews- One Englishman was left beaming with pride when Shai Hope's devotion to crease occupation secured an historic Test match victory and a place in the first-class record books. For Hope's historic Headingley hundreds reminded Alan Wells, who had the most fleeting of associations with Test cricket himself in the mid-90s, of an early episode in their relationship at Bede's, an independent school nestled in the countryside of East Sussex. One that confirmed his pupil was at odds with both his 16 years and the Twenty20 generation into which he was born, as a devoted disciple of the art of batsmanship rather than a Bajan braggadocio. Beneath the Cantona collars lurked a serious talent.'His approach to practice was exemplary. I remember stopping him before he went into a net once and asking him what his objective was for that session. He told me it was the same as every other time he walked in. I said: "What's that?" His answer: "I never want to get out".'The high price the 23-year-old placed on his wicket at Leeds was integral to West Indies' win and, strikingly, the first occurrence of a player celebrating three figures twice in a match since first-class cricket was first played there in 1890. It was Hope's coming of age as an international player, a journey accelerated by his time as a sixth form boarder at Bede's.Since 2010, Wells, the school's director of cricket, has regularly headed out to Bridgetown to hand-pick a scholar for a programme jointly funded with the Barbados Cricket Association. Hope was his first draft.'What stood out about Shai? His passion for the game - it's in his blood with his brother Kyle and father Ian - his determination to improve, and after watching him practise I knew he would be willing to work really hard, to sacrifice a lot to fulfill his potential.'Bede's has a rich cricket pedigree. Their Under-15 team were crowned national champions this summer. Wells' eldest son Luke – the Sussex left-hander, who has struck 15 first-class hundreds – and Middlesex's England Lions spinner Ollie Rayner are former first XI captains.Despite being an outsider, Wells identified Hope to follow in their footsteps, and appointed him captain for both his years at the school.'He was a very mature cricketer, and a very natural leader because of his obvious determination to succeed through hard work. He was therefore a great role model for everyone that came into contact with him,' Wells said.'We will never forget him for the wonderful young man he was but also the lasting legacy he has left. In Sussex schools cricket people still talk about Shai and some of the innings he played against Eastbourne College and Ardingly College. The people that witnessed them have not forgotten.'Particularly one against Ardingly in which he struck 178 not out and took Abi Sakande, an England Under-19 at the time and now on the Sussex staff, apart.'Shai didn't think he was bowling fast enough at him, so he stood about two metres down the pitch so it would come on a bit quicker, and he just kept smacking him into the trees for six – it was just extraordinary,' Wells recalls. The fact that the pair remain in close contact is '100% a reflection on him as a character' according to Wells: 'He still sends me birthday wishes and Christmas greetings, stuff like that. I am so proud of him and his achievements.'Yesterday morning's text message reflected fatigue. Wells' response was to remind his former pupil of the offer made at the start of West Indies' tour – a ticket with his name on it for the series finale at Lords. -------------------------------------------------- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricket/article-4837842/West-Indies-batsman-Shai-Hope-schooled-East-Sussex.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - Nasser Hussain: Shai Hope gives England selectors a lesson

03:29
AutoNews- That is one of the great turnarounds in cricket – and, arguably, in any sport. To walk off the field at Edgbaston having lost 19 wickets in a day, then come here and chase down 322, is a phenomenal effort. I doff my cap to West Indies. And what about Shai Hope? He came into this game averaging 18 in Tests, so if he had been English he would have been dropped ages ago. But the two hundreds he made here are a reminder that if you stick with someone for long enough, you never know what might happen.Kraigg Brathwaite, too, showed a lot of composure and character. These are two calm and mature young men.Given the events at Edgbaston, where West Indies were a rabble, it reflects even better on their efforts.England may look at Hope in particular and realise they must continue with their policy of giving batsmen a decent run.For that reason, Tom Westley should get another chance at Lord’s to prove that he is good enough at this level.West Indies stuck with their youngsters despite the flak they were getting and it has produced one of the greatest wins in their history.Much was made of West Indies’ white-ball players, going off to the IPL and leaving the Caribbean behind but the reaction when the winning runs were scored showed that the red-ball game means a lot to these youngsters. It’s great to see.As for England, I had no problem at all with Joe Root’s declaration on the fourth evening. In fact, I think he got it spot on.Previous captains would probably have batted on, but everyone expected the pitch to deteriorate, and Root had the likes of Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad at his disposal — and Moeen Ali to bowl on a pitch we all thought might help him.Where England really lost this game was in scoring only 258 on the first day, and that stemmed from the inconsistency of their top order. It was always going to catch up with them at some point but nobody thought it would be now. Then, when they bowled, they were not full enough — which is a crime at Headingley. Perhaps they just took their eye off the ball a little.Lord’s suddenly becomes a huge game — which is brilliant for Test cricket. -------------------------------------------------- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/cricket/article-4834350/Nasser-Hussain-Shai-Hope-gives-England-selectors-lesson.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - All Blacks Piutau and Halai want to play for Tonga in 2019

04:47
All Blacks Charles Piutau and Frank Halai want to switch their allegiance to Tonga — and face England at the World Cup.The Pacific Islanders want World Rugby to loosen the eligibility rules to allow capped players to return to tier-two nations. An identical policy has been introduced in rugby league and the Mail on Sunday understands Ma'a Nonu and Victor Vito could also make themselves available for Samoa under the proposals.'If there's a way to do it, I want to give something back and play for Tonga at the 2019 World Cup,' Piutau told the Mail on Sunday.Tonga are in the same pool as England for the World Cup.'I have told the Tongan coach I would be on board if there's a way to do it,' Piutau continued.'If our sport followed the rugby league model, it would be a massive boost for the Pacific Islands and it would make the world stage competitive again.'There's a lot of wasted talent. The rugby league boys put Tonga back on the map and union should do the same thing.'Piutau, 26, will become the highest paid rugby union player in the world when he joins Bristol next season for £1million per year. His former team-mate Halai said he would follow suit.'Tier-two countries need a boost,' Halai said. 'I would switch to Tonga if I had the chance.'No Pacific Island team have reached a World Cup final and a policy change could result in a significant shift of power. It would make eligible a host of Europe-based Polynesians, including former junior All Black Nick Williams.'I would love to go back and play for my motherland, Samoa,' Williams told the Mail on Sunday. 'There are a couple of hundred Polynesians who would jump at the chance.'I played for the junior All Blacks over a decade ago and that's tied me down. I would love the rules to change.'Do people want a two-horse race between England and the All Blacks or do they want to see five or six teams competing? The big dogs need some competition.'Vito, the 33-cap All Black with Samoan ancestry, added: 'I made my bed with the All Blacks so I wouldn't want to take away the opportunity or development of a player who deserves it more, but I would love to play for Samoa.'Samoa are yet to qualify for the World Cup and are on the brink of bankruptcy. Former All Black Sam Tuitupou believes the change could rescue the nation from financial strife.'Samoa have been declared bankrupt so if Ma'a Nonu or Steven Luatua came on board, that would attract a bit of sponsorship,' said Tuitupou. 'If we don't have guys like Steven and Charles Piutau competing at the World Cup, then we can't say it's a showcase of the world's best talent.'Wycliff Palu, the 35-year-old, 58-cap Wallaby No 8, added: 'If I was a couple of years younger, I'd definitely have put my hand up. It would be good for rugby.' Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/article-5139769/All-Blacks-Piutau-Halai-want-play-Tonga-2019.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - Appie Nouri's brother shares positive news a year after cardiac arrest

02:58
Abdelhak Nouri is showing signs of improvement just over a year after he suffered brain damage following a cardiac arrest during a friendly for Ajax. The 21-year-old was playing against Werder Bremen in July, 2017, when he collapsed and received CPR on the pitch before being airlifted to hospital. Doctors were initially optimistic about Nouri's progress, but Ajax later confirmed that his diagnosis was career-ending. However, Nouri's brother, Abderrahim, has now shared a positive update on his sibling, who suffered 'serious and permanent' brain damage. He said: 'His neurological condition is better than a few months ago. 'Physically, it's hard, he does not move the body, just the head, but sometimes he gets out of bed to sit in his wheelchair. 'You can communicate with him.' Nouri suffered a cardiac arrest after coming on as a half-time substitute during the pre-season friendly in Austria. He was treated by emergency medical staff after falling to the turf without being touched with just over 15 minutes of the game remaining. Justin Kluivert, Nouri's former team-mate at Ajax, picked the No 34 shirt after completing his £16million move to Roma this summer in order to pay tribute to his friend, who wore the same number in Holland. Nouri made 15 appearances for Ajax's first-team during the 2016-17 season, including three in the Europa League, and scored on his senior debut in a 5-0 win over Willem II in the Dutch Cup. He was tipped to have bright future having been a regular in all of Holland's youth teams, playing on 19 occasions for the country's Under 19s. Breaking News - Dillian Whyte's net worth revealed ahead of Joseph Parker fight

07:54
Jamaican-born Brixton boxer Dillian Whyte will be back in the ring on July 28, when he faces former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker. Like Parker, Whyte also knows what it’s like to lose to the current IBF, WBA (Super), WBO and IBO champion Anthony Joshua, but for him, his 2015 loss—his only loss so far—seems to have had an incredibly positive effect on the boxer. Since the defeat, Whyte changed his game-plan. He began focusing on eating and living right, training harder and improving himself. After Joshua, Whyte put in impressive displays against Dereck Chisora, Robert Helenius and Lucas Browne, boxers who between them have only lost seven fights. He will now face Joseph Parker, himself only defeated once in 25 fights, with a potential shot at the world title on the cards for the winner. Here is all you need to know about Dillian Whyte, including what is his net worth, the Whyte vs Parker fight, Instagram account and upbringing. Dillian Whyte was born on April 11, 1988 in Port Antonio, Jamaica. Whyte moved to London when he was 12-years-old. He had a very tough upbringing. His mother went to London to earn money so that Whyte could join her, sending some back as well so he could be looked after. However, Whyte went for days without food in Jamaica, resorting to stealing and scavenging for Coca-Cola bottles. At the age of 12, Whyte finally moved to London, but his life didn’t improve: 'I swapped one ghetto for another,' he said. Whyte ended up getting involved with the south-London gangs. The boxer has been shot and stabbed multiple times as a teen. One time Whyte was shot, he removed the bullet with pliers and sterilised the wound with alcohol. 'I must have watched John Rambo when I was a kid because I sterilised the wound with alcohol and took the bullet out with pliers and laid low for a couple of weeks,’ he said in an interview with the Mail on Sunday, adding that he hid the injuries from his mother. Whyte’s life began to change for the better when he discovered kickboxing. He recalled wondering: 'You can get paid and beat people up and not go to prison?'. In his early 20s Whyte moved to boxing, with his first professional fight coming in May 2011. Whyte has since fought 23 more times, losing only one, to Anthony Joshua, in 2015. However, as an amateur, Whyte beat Joshua in his very first fight. 'Winning a world title is part of my ambition but the ultimate goal is to inspire people. Let people see that it doesn't matter who ripped you off. Never let people put their doubt and their disbelief on you. Believe in yourself, work hard and dedicate yourself. In 2012, Whyte was banned from boxing for two years after he tested positive for the stimulant methylhexaneamine (MHA) following an in-competition test in October 2012. Whyte admitted to taking the supplement. He returned for the ring in November 2014, fighting three times in the space of one month. Dillian Whyte’s last fight before the Joseph Parker clash was against

Breaking News - Jana Novotna to be remembered as popular Wimbledon winner

05:31
For someone who won a total of 100 professional tennis titles in her career, it seems deeply unfair that Jana Novotna should be remembered for something associated with defeat. She was, undoubtedly, a winner, a fine singles player and truly great doubles exponent who possessed a range of skills that is increasingly hard to find in the modern women’s game.Yet the picture of her that will be etched in the minds of all who saw it will be that of her crying on the shoulder of the Duchess of Kent in the midst of the Centre Court, having missed the chance to beat Steffi Graf in the 1993 Wimbledon final. It remains one of the iconic images of sport in the nineties, and no wonder. The member of the royal family showing the basic human quality of offering comfort to someone distraught resonated way beyond competitive sport, let alone tennis. And anyone who has competed hard at anything could identify with what Novotna was going through, the regret of squandered opportunity when a chance presented itself.Ultimately, however, there was to be a happy ending to the story, five years later, when she won the final at the third attempt. She thus fulfilled the encouraging words that the Duchess had offered to her: “One day you will do it, I know you will,” she had told her. Finally the ghosts of the ’93 final were laid to rest, and it should not be underestimated what an achievement that was as the events of that match against Graf had followed Novotna around ever since.Novotna had a smooth all-court game that relied not on power but her wonderfully soft hands that allowed her to attack the net with serve-and-volley tactics or to approach it after a delicate sliced backhand. That style worked especially well on grass, and created all manner of problems for Graf, who was trailing 1-4 and 30-40 in the deciding set before Novotna buckled in sight of the winning post, her nerve punctured by a double fault.Coached by former Grand Slam winner Hana Mandlikova and from a country with a long history of producing a wide variety of gifted tennis players, she fought hard against the ‘Czech choker’ label, and in 1998 finally banished it.In 1997 she had reached the final again, but was beaten by Martina Hingis at a time when, it turned out, the Swiss was reaching her peak. A year later she carved open the draw by beating Venus Williams in the quarter finals and then, labouring under the burden of being strong favourite, defeated France’s overmatched Nathalie Tauziat to finally lift the Venus Rosewater Dish. How extraordinary to think that both Hingis and Williams were both performing at the US Open this September, because Novotna had been long gone.Fulfilled by winning Wimbledon, she retired in 1999 after collecting twelve Grand Slam doubles titles and four mixed doubles titles to go along with 24 singles trophies.Thereafter she became a popular member of the BBC’s commentary team, did some coaching and played in veterans’ events, a regular at the All England Club, where she had won

Breaking News - Marcus Rashford spotted out in with girlfriend Lucia Loi

Breaking News - Marcus Rashford spotted out in with girlfriend Lucia Loi #Manchester, #United, #star, #Marcus, #Rashford, #spotted, #girlfriend, #Lucia, #Loi Marcus Rashford may have been absent from Manchester United's win over Watford on Saturday, but that didn't stop him celebrating with a relaxing Sunday afternoon out with his girlfriend. The 20-year-old, who was suspended for the 2-1 win at Vicarage Road, was pictured walking through the leafy Altrincham suburb of Hale with his partner Lucia Loi. They were heading to the popular Italian eatery Piccolino, where they enjoyed lunch together as Rashford made the most of his afternoon off from training. The restaurant has grown used to the stars of Manchester's two biggest clubs dropping in and recently hosted Rashford's team-mates Chris Smalling, Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay. It would have been the perfect way for Rashford to forget about a troublesome week in which is has found himself in the spotlight through no fault of his own. Indeed, it was Jamie Carragher's suggestion that he should leave Old Trafford that sparked a debate that angered Jose Mourinho. The Sky Sports pundit, speaking after Rashford scored the winning goal for England against Switzerland last week, said the striker may have to switch clubs to reach his potential and suggested Everton as a possible destination. Mourinho hit back in his press conference prior to the Watford match, coming armed with a ton of statistics that seemingly prove Rashford is getting the required amount of playing time. 'In the season 2016-17, Marcus Rashford played 32 Premier League matches and 11 Europa League matches including the final. Three in the FA Cup,' he said. 'He had 53 appearances. But if you want minutes, he played 3,068 minutes. If you divide that by 90 it is 34.2 matches of 90 minutes in 2016-17. 'In 2017-18 he played 35 Premier League matches, eight Champions League, five FA Cup — including the final — three League Cup and the Super Cup. 'He played a total of 52 matches with 2,676 minutes. Divide that by 90 minutes and it is 29.7 matches. So in all, 105 appearances, 5,744 minutes, 63.7 matches of 90 minutes — including five finals.' Further backing up Mourinho's point, statistics compiled by Opta show Rashford has played 108 games since the Portuguese took charge in 2016. No other Manchester United player has featured more. Breaking News - Salah leaves young fan in tears as he hands over match worn shirt #Mohamed, #Salah, #leaves, #young, #fan, #tears, #Liverpool, #star, #hands, #match, #worn, #shirt Mohamed Salah left one young Liverpool fan in tears on Saturday afternoon as he handed him his match worn shirt following victory over Southampton. The aptly named 'Egyptian King' showed glimpses of his electrifying form from last season as he netted in a comfortable 3-0 win at Anfield. And as he said his thanks to the supporters that stayed behind, he noticed a sign asking for his shirt and was quick to fulfill the request, leaving the young Reds' fan in floods of tears. Wayne Dunlop, father of son Lewis who was handed Salah's shirt, took to Twitter after the match to reflect on a day he and his son will 'never forget'. He wrote: '@MoSalah I cannot thank you enough mo.. Brought my lad to tears (and me).... These are moments in life that hold more value than i can explain.. A day my son Lewis will never forget @LFC.' Salah has faced some criticism in the early parts of the season having failed to fully recapture his exceptional form from last season. But he was instrumental in the win over the Saints and deservedly got himself a goal - another reason he was more than happy to cap off the day by making a supporter's. Attention now turns to the Carabao Cup in midweek when Jurgen Klopp's side take on league rivals Chelsea at Anfield before then travelling to Stamford Bridge for a league meeting on Saturday. Breaking News - Liverpool super-fan creates bizarre but catchy jingle

02:35
A Liverpool fan has come up with a bizarre but catchy version of The Archies hit single 'Sugar, Sugar' following Philippe Coutinho's £145million move to Barcelona. The self-proclaimed 'biggest Liverpool fan in Cork' filmed himself singing the football chant as he sat in front of his bed which is draped with a red and white scarf and a Liverpool jacket in the background. The Reds super-fan and YouTuber 'Kevin Murphy' (real name Richy Sheehy) dedicates the song to Jurgen Klopp's fantastic front three, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino while claiming the club don't need Coutinho any more.Kevin starts off the Youtube video by proclaiming he's Cork's biggest Liverpool fan and that he loves the Merseyside club.He believes his song should be sang on 'The Kop' and will go down really well among his fellow supporters. The Irishman, who is wearing a Liverpool shirt and jacket in the video, suggests that jingle could be used for the club's massive game against league leaders Manchester City on Sunday. As the original song 'Sugar, Sugar' by The Archies plays in the background, the Reds supporter gives the lucky viewers a preview of his creation. The simple lyrics start off with Salah, Liverpool's top goalscorer this season, before being followed by Mane and Firmino.During the song, Kevin sings that Coutinho's departure 'doesn't matter' because they have the Egyptian striker as the song begins to loop. The bizarre recording has a similar feel to the 'Will Grigg's on fire' viral video which was posted last year by a Youtube user ‘Kenno’ (real name Sean Kennedy).Sheehy, an Irish comedian who currently resides in Amsterdam, posted the hilarious video on Tuesday as it begins to do the rounds of social media.Although the video has been labelled as 'comedy' on his channel, there's a serious chance the song could be echoing around Anfield very soon. ✅ Breaking News - Napoli fans don Koulibaly masks to show support after racism storm #Napoli, #fans, #don, #Kalidou, #Koulibaly, #masks, #support, #racism, #storm Napoli fans produced homemade banners and wore Kalidou Koulibaly masks as they showed for the Senegalese following the recent racism storm. The defender was subjected to racist chanting and monkey chants in the club's match against Inter Milan recently. Koulibaly was sent off in that 1-0 defeat but the club's supporters have shown their unwavering support in the face of racism towards their player by showing messages of support ahead of Saturday's home tie against Bologna. Koulibaly will not face Bologna as he serves a one-match suspension following his dismissal at the San Siro but he remains at the centre of events. His team-mates warmed up in shirts with his name on the back as they join the fans in lending their support in the face of adversity. Inter have already been punished for the episode and will have to play two home matches behind closed doors. Many supporters turned to the hashtag of #SiamoTuttiKoulibaly which translates into English as 'We Are All Koulibaly'. Should a similar incident happen again, boss Carlo Ancelotti has insisted he would take his players off the pitch in strike against the treatment of players such as Koulibaly. On Friday, team-mate Ghoulam Faouzi wrote on twitter: 'It doesn't matter the color of the skin. It doesn't matter the religion. It doesn't matter what team you're rooting for. 'Football, like all sports, is a game. And all the games are passion, fun, freedom: And in freedom we are all alike! Tomorrow we will all be Koulibaly!' Breaking News - Man United not for sale despite link to Saudi Arabia royal family

01:46
Breaking News - Man United not for sale despite link to Saudi Arabia royal family #Man, #United, #not, #sale, #despite, #link, #Saudi, #Arabia, #royal, #family Manchester United sources insist the club is not for sale following speculation over a takeover bid by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. The Saudi royal family, worth an estimated £850billion, are understood to be interested in buying United from the Glazer family to rival Abu Dhabi's ownership of Manchester City. The club already have a connection with the oil-rich Gulf state after announcing a strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia's General Sports Authority last year. The speculation was fuelled after it emerged that United co-owner Avram Glazer is due to fly to Riyadh for an investment conference next week, although a number of prominent business leaders have already pulled out over Saudi Arabia's alleged involvement in the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. However, it's understood the American owners have no wish to sell a club they bought in 2005 for £790m, even though United are now valued at between £3bn and £4bn. The Glazers sold two per cent of the club's shares with limited voting rights in August last year, and may be interested in selling more to the Saudis. But they are unlikely to sanction any deal that would dilute their ownership and control of United. Breaking News - Kaiser! The Greatest Footballer Never to Play Football - review

06:44
Sometimes it is nice to know that even the biggest anorak does not know every tale on planet football. Kaiser! The Greatest Footballer Never to Play Football is a wonderful reminder that this game can still throw up stories unlike any other. In the same way that Searching for Sugarman, the story of South Africa’s Bob Dylan Rodriguez, befuddled the minds of music lovers when it was released, the life of Carlos Henrique Raposo, also known as Carlos Kaiser, will entertain even the most minimal of football fans. Released in cinemas this week, this documentary that cleverly blends interviews with acted out scenes tells the story of the footballer who did not play football. Picture it. Your side has signed a new striker. Glowing reports appear in the press. He comes with endorsements from the likes of Renato Gaucho. You can’t wait to see him on the pitch. And then the injuries start to crop up. He never seems to be anywhere near playing. One day, there’s excitement. He appears on the bench. The manager sends him to warm up. And then, rather than taking a risk and revealing the truth – that he does not have an iota of football talent – he decides to climb over the fence and have a punch up with fans over a perceived slight. When the owner of the club, a local gangster, threatened him with a gun, he explained the fan had questioned the owner’s sexuality. Rather than being shot, the player earns a new three-month deal. Stories like this come rolling out of the film, which is fundamentally about a man who said: ‘If I had to symbolically kill my grandma not to play, I would’. Yet Kaiser managed to play for a series of Brazil’s biggest clubs. Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco da Gama all bought into the con and handed him contracts. It is enough to leave you watching with your jaw agape. The laughs also come as you find out how, exactly, he has managed to avoid revealing how bad he is at football on yet another occasion. The film benefits from the people telling the stories. It is not just the word of Kaiser, who is clearly something of an unreliable narrator. Instead, you hear the thoughts of Carlos Alberto Torres, Renato Gaucho and Bebeto, all of whom were involved in his playing career. It is Torres who has one of the standout lines of the early part of the film: ‘He could do everything but the ball was his problem’. As another former team-mate puts it, ‘let’s say if he was studying for a degree, he would have nailed the theory side of being a footballer’. It is in stories from off the field that Kaiser shines, while avoiding any close interaction with the pitch. ‘He was the class pimp’ – knowing women in every city while travelling with the team. He used his looks and his slight resemblance to former Brazil international Gaucho to convince the women of Rio De Janeiro that he was a top class player and therefore worth spending time with. Kaiser was one of the kings of Rio’s nightlife. That is part of the appeal of this film – the slow r

Breaking News - Paul Madeley was a one-club Rolls-Royce of a player and a gentleman

04:49
When Paul Madeley claimed he could not command a place in the great Leeds United team built by Don Revie he offered a clue to his two enduring qualities. First, of course, there was his versatility. For Madeley could play absolutely anywhere in the team and could perform with genuine quality wherever he might be selected to play. He wore every outfield shirt number at least 15 times during his 17 years at Elland Road as he made more than 700 appearances for Leeds. Revie liked to call him his 'Rolls- Royce' and even in a team which acquired a fierce reputation for being adept at the ugly side of the game he was always an absolute gentleman. Second was his humility. 'I'm not in the great team,' said Madeley. 'Ask anyone to name the great Leeds United team in my era and I don't figure in it. I don't figure in it, even if I'm choosing the team. 'I switched about, due to injury mainly, I never had a regular spot. No, the team was: Sprake; Reaney and Cooper full-backs; Charlton and Hunter centre backs; in midfield Lorimer, Bremner, Giles, Eddie Gray; and up front Mick Jones and Allan Clarke.' The modest appraisal encapsulates his brilliance and he was highly regarded by anyone who watched Revie's Leeds rise through the ranks and dominate English football. His death at the age of 73 was confirmed on Monday night with a message on Facebook from Paul Reaney's son Neil. 'An absolute colossus who has battled against the odds for years,' said Neil Reaney. 'A massive hero of mine and a lot of Leeds fans. Dad grew up with this legend and they came through the Elland Road ranks together to play in one of the best sides Europe and the world will see. Madeley's versatility extended beyond football, where he enjoyed a successful business career with his brothers. They sold a chain of DIY stores for £27million in 1987 and he was often hailed as a potential saviour as Leeds plunged into financial crisis. But he had suffered from health problems since his retirement. In 1992, he underwent a successful operation to remove a brain tumour. Later there was a mild heart attack and he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Madeley did not return in an official capacity after his retirement as a player in 1980 but he was a one-club man, born in Beeston, and, like most of Revie's players, would always adore Leeds United. The bonds were tight from the many battles they went through together and he played a significant part in many of them, sometimes up front and sometimes at the back. In the early year, he was more often utilised in attacking positions. He wore number nine in the League Cup final and scored the vital away goal at Juventus when Leeds won the Fairs Cup. Breaking News - Super-fit Ron Saunders was a mix of Bruce Lee and Popeye

06:19
Norwich, 1972, and there are butchers’ dogs across East Anglia viewing Ron Saunders with envy. A mix of Popeye and Bruce Lee, Saunders looks in better condition than some of the young Norwich City players he is preparing for life in the top flight.Saunders is 39 in the photograph. He is most famous for guiding Aston Villa to their first league title for 71 years in 1981, then resigning in February 1982 while Villa were in the last eight of the European Cup — which they went on to win under Tony Barton. However Saunders was an established manager by then; at Norwich City, when he joined in 1969, he was 36, had just been player-manager at Yeovil Town and had overseen 12 games at Oxford United. He was making his way.‘When he went to Norwich, he was a promising young manager,’ says David Cross. ‘He didn’t mind getting his kit off, that was the boss. He was a well-built fella.’Cross signed for Norwich from Rochdale in October 1971 for £45,000, a record for both clubs. Cross was 20, a novice centre forward from the third tier, but he developed quickly under Saunders, who had been a striker himself.Cross discovered many years later that Saunders had not seen him play before, but he fitted the profile the manager wanted: young, hungry, willing to listen.‘Ron really did mean business,’ Cross says. ‘I arrived early in his third season at Norwich. He had spent the first two getting together a young squad and getting rid of some older players. He signed young players from the lower leagues like Peter Silvester from Reading, myself from Rochdale, plus young players in First Division clubs’ reserves — Graham Paddon from Coventry and Doug Livermore from Liverpool.‘At the start of that third season — I found out when I got there — he had told the squad they would be promoted. It wasn’t arrogance, it was self-belief, and he wanted to go up as champions.’Given that Norwich had not been a top-flight club since their foundation 67 years earlier, and that they had finished 11th, then 10th in his first two seasons in the old Second Division, Saunders’ prediction was quite a leap - but the players had faith. He had, literally, made them fit for purpose.‘The first thing I noticed when I entered the changing room was a typed-up block of fixtures on the wall,’ Cross adds. ‘There’d be maybe six games and Ron had a designated number of points he expected from each.'All the home games were to be won — two points each in those days — and there might be a difficult away game where he had allocated one point. It was realistic. When I got there the lads were four points ahead of schedule. He made it quite clear, “We’re going up”.‘We were very fit. I learnt how hard pre-season had been. It was high intensity from the first minute of every match. What Liverpool do now, we did 40 years ago.‘Whenever keeper Kevin Keelan got the ball, the defence had six or seven seconds to get to the halfway line. That would push the midfield up. If the opposition won the ball from Keelan’s kick, the Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-5322817/Super-fit-Ron-Saunders-mix-Bruce-Lee-Popeye.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - Harry Kane meets Jimmy Greaves at Spurs training ground

03:40
Harry Kane may be on top form but he still has some distance to go before he matches up to the man he welcomed to Hotspur Way on Friday.Jimmy Greaves was a guest of honour at the training ground as Spurs prepare to take on Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday afternoon. And it was Tottenham skipper Kane who showed him around, clearly enjoying the chance to meet one of his club's most legendary players.Greaves, who was part of England's World Cup winning squad in 1966, suffered a life-threatening stroke in May 2016 and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since. But he was animated as he spent time with Kane, who showed him a photograph of himself that hangs in a room at the training ground.Christian Eriksen also popped in to spend some time with Greaves at the training ground in Enfield. This is not the first time the club have invited the iconic striker along since he suffered the stroke. He was invited back to White Hart Lane before it was torn down at the end of last season.Greaves joined Spurs in 1961 in a £99,999 transfer from AC Milan and went onto become their top goalscorer - with 266 - a record he still holds to this day.The 77-year-old has rarely been involved with his former clubs, especially as he has openly admitted he prefers watching games on television to travelling to stadiums.Greaves opened up about his illness last year. 'I remain in a wheelchair and it's now likely I will stay this way for the rest of my life,' he said.'The doctors have told me I won't walk again and that I will always need ongoing care.'It was devastating to hear them say that but I will never stop trying to get better - and the main thing is that I'm still here fighting all the way.'I'm not feeling sorry for myself, I'm just taking each day as it comes and trying to make small improvements all the time.'Greaves also represented Chelsea and West Ham during a distinguished playing career. Breaking News - John Magnier falls during a walk on beach in Barbados

02:20
Irish horse racing tycoon John Magnier was left a little red-faced after taking a fall during a walk along a beach in Barbados. The 69-year-old, who has built up a reported £3.5billion fortune on the back of the phenomenal success of the Coolmore Stud in County Tipperary, slipped and fell during a sunshine break on the Caribbean island.A frail-looking Magnier had to be helped back up to his feet by an assistant after stumbling in the water. The businessman, dubbed The Boss, has a multi-million pound seafront home on the Caribbean island, where he spends much of his time despite recently acquiring the Sutton Scotney Estate in Hampshire, which includes 23 houses and 4,200 acres of land, for an estimated £52m.Magnier is married to Susan, the daughter of Irish racehorse-trainer Vincent O'Brien, and they have five children. He has a property portfolio that stretches from a £30m beach-front pad in Marbella, which was once rented to former Manchester United, Real Madrid and England star David Beckham, and the 18th-century Cashel Palace Hotel in County Tipperary, which he bought for an estimated £2.25m.Magnier also has an interest in the exclusive Sandy Lane Resort in Barbados. He also has a stunning art collection, including a £70m Modigliani painting and a £25m Sir Joshua Reynolds portrait. Breaking News - Stradivarius wins £1m jackpot in Lonsdale Cup at York

03:43
Stradivarius scooped the inaugural Weatherbys Hamilton Stayers' Million bonus when completing a clean sweep of the series with a famous victory in the Lonsdale Cup at York. Winner of the Yorkshire Cup, Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup, the top-class stayer, owned by Bjorn Nielsen, landed the bonus for connections with a performance that was full of guts and determination. It may not have been straight forward for the 4-11 favourite, but the John Gosden-trained four-year-old ultimately got the upper hand in the final furlong to beat his old rival Count Octave in the hands of Frankie Dettori. Petitioner, wearing the Nielsen second colours, set a sensible gallop until the turn for home, where Count Octave took over. Stradivarius took some time to find his feet, but he knuckled down to his task and once he hit the front at the furlong pole, he kept up the gallop to beat Count Octave by a length and half. Aidan O'Brien's Idaho was four and a half lengths away in third place. Gosden said: 'Full marks to the owner, he's been trying to breed a Derby winner for years and he ends up with a Cup horse! 'But seriously, he's passionate about breeding and puts a lot of time and effort into it, so he deserves it. 'It's an extraordinary achievement. The horse has a lot of determination, but also a lot of class. 'I wouldn't say he was at his sparkling best today, Rab (Havlin, on Petitioner) did a good job setting a pace and it was a good job he was there otherwise there wouldn't have been much pace at all. 'I think he's better off a really strong pace. But we can't complain as we won. 'Just briefly Frankie had his ground taken. He hates coming up the rail at York, he won right down the middle on Mark Johnston's horse yesterday and was determined to do the same, but he ended up on the rail.' Reflecting on the year, he said: 'The highlight was definitely Ascot, that was a terrific race, we never knew if he'd stay or not. 'After the first leg we were only thinking of Ascot, after that then it (bonus) became a real possibility, then of course, after Goodwood we were only ever going to be thinking of it. 'When it was announced we thought it was a great incentive, but would be very hard to do, so I'm thrilled to do it in the first year.' Breaking News - Sir Michael Stoute admits Expert Eye is one of the best

04:34
Sir Michael Stoute has admitted Expert Eye is 'best two-year-old I have trained for a while' as the 10-time champion trainer aims to cap a resurgent season with victory in Saturday's Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.Success for the unbeaten son of Acclamation and first prize of almost £300,000 would lift Stoute above his career-best domestic prize money haul of £3.7million achieved in 2003.That was the year Stoute landed his last group-one two-year-old race with Kieren Fallon-ridden Red Bloom in the Fillies' Mile.Expert Eye is 8-13 favourite for the Dewhurst with Paddy Power after he landed the Group Two Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood by four and a half lengths.Immediately chasing him home that day were four subsequent winners including Mill Reef Stakes scorer James Garfield and Champagne Stakes winner Seahenge, a possible Aidan O'Brien-trained rival on Saturday.Stoute, whose only Dewhurst success was with Ajdal in 1986, said: 'Before Expert Eye ran we knew he was pretty smart. He is a good looking horse and very athletic and has been pretty natural from the beginning.'It was a very good performance at Goodwood and the form has worked out. We didn't know he would win like that but we knew he would win. He could not have done it any easier.'The option of running Khaled Abdullah-owned Expert Eye, who again will be ridden by Andrea Atzeni, in the Group One National Stakes at the Curragh last month was shelved when the colt picked up an infection. But Stoute said: 'We have had plenty of time to prepare him – there will be no excuses on that front.'Stoute's last British Classic success was Workforce in the 2010 Derby. Paddy Power make Expert Eye 4-1 for the 2018 2,000 Guineas. To enter the winter with a Classic favourite in his stable would be a fitting end to a Flat season again dominated by O'Brien with his 23 group-one wins but one in which Stoute has claimed both the Group One Eclipse and International Stakes with Ulysses. There is also the possibility of more top-level success.Ulysses is on course for next month's Breeders' Cup Turf, at which he could be joined by stablemate and 2016 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Queen's Trust.Poet's Word, winner of the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood and runner-up in the Irish Champion Stakes, runs in the Champion Stakes at Ascot a week on Saturday.Stoute said: 'I don't think we have ever had a battalion like Aidan's before. That's a fact. If you can't handle it, run away.'It's quite incredible really but I just get on with my job. I have won more group races this year than I have for a few years so I am having a resurgence.' Breaking News - Leo Percovich receives emotional reception at Middlesbrough

02:33
The Riverside was full of emotion prior to Middlesbrough's Championship play-off semi-final first-leg against Aston Villa on Saturday. Moments before kick-off, former Boro goalkeeping coach Leo Percovich walked emotionally around the pitch with his son after his world was turned upside down late last year. The Uruguayan flew from South America to Teesside to thank the Boro supporters in person after the heartbreaking loss of his two daughters following a car crash. Percovich, his wife Juliana, and their three children were all involved in the tragic accident in Brazil last December. While their son, Pietro, survived after being seriously ill at one stage, both daughters Antonella and Valentina passed away from their injuries. And on Saturday at the Riverside, Percovich, who returned for the first time since the car crash, and his son received a very emotional reception as they walked on the pitch before the game got underway. His son walked around with a Middlesbrough flag, while the 50-year-old proudly held up a red-coloured banner, which read 'Always Together'. It was a memorable moment for the pair and they would have been deeply touched by the welcome they received. Percovich was a terrace favourite during four years at the Riverside and the chest-thumping tribute he paid all four corners of the ground told you why. ✅ Breaking News - James Wade apologises and blames 'hypo mania' for Seigo Asada comments

✅ Breaking News - James Wade apologises and blames 'hypo mania' for Seigo Asada comments #James, #Wade, #apologises, #blames, #hypo, #mania, #Seigo, #Asada, #comments James Wade has apologised for his behaviour during his PDC World Darts Championship win over Seigo Asada on Wednesday night The World No 9 survived a major scare as he twice battled back from a set down to overcome Japanese qualifier Asada. After drawing level at one set all, Wade shouted in Asada's face in celebration, and after the game gave a bizarre interview in which he said he 'wanted to hurt' his opponent. Wade also said he had won 'for the UK', leading to some accusations of racism, however he has now apologised, calling Asada a 'great player'. The 35-year-old, who is bipolar, also blamed 'a hypo mania episode' - a euphoric high phase which comes with manic depression - for his unusual behaviour. In a statement on his Twitter page, Wade said: 'I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologise for my actions last night. 'Seigo Asada is a great player and I would like to say sorry to him, the fans and the PDC. Anyone who has followed my professional career will know this was very out of character for me, and I am disappointed in myself with the way I acted both on the stage and in my interviews after the match. 'I was fighting a battle with myself before I even got on the stage due to a hypo mania episode which can happen to me at any time, and no-one is more upset than I am about what happened. 'I would like to again apologise and hope that people can understand how remorseful I am.' Wade, who won the European Championship in October, was given a stern test by the Asian Tour No 2 player. He eventually progressed 3-2 and will face Jelle Klaasen or Keegan Brown in the next round. In his post match interview with Sky Sports, Wade said: 'I dug in deep there. It's a magnificent feeling. I could have easily lost that. I've done it for my son, for my country, so it's good. 'I kept giving it to him, I wanted to hurt him, I wanted to really hurt him in his face. It wasn't a great game but I wanted to hurt him and I wanted to progress. That's for my son, and also for the UK.' Former player Wayne Mardle, working as a pundit, described Wade's behaviour as 'thuggish' and said there was no place in darts for it. 'Does he mean he wanted to punch him in his face? What does he mean? I'm absolutely lost for words,' Mardle said. 'That's just not on. The intimidation, overly aggressive, I hope he wakes up in the morning and thinks, "I've made a mistake there". He can't think that's right and no-one watching it can think it's right. That's thuggish behaviour, there's no place in darts for that.' Wade is a patron of Bipolar UK, and has previously spoken openly about his battles with mental illness. He told the Observer in December 2017: 'I'm walking around my ideal world where I've got money, cars, sunshine and flowers in front of me while behind me it's like a nuclear bomb has gone off. 'I have lots of fun and get my sparkle back but I turn into an idiot again and upset people and I need to take the pills again. But I push my luck a Source:https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/othersports/article-6515755/James-Wade-apologises-blames-hypo-mania-Seigo-Asada-comments.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ito=1490&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele steps up recovery from injury

02:47
Ousmane Dembele is closing in on a return to full fitness after seeing his start to life at Barcelona ruined by a serious hamstring problem. The 20-year-old suffered the injury against Getafe on September 16, less than three weeks after he had sealed a £96million move from Borussia Dortmund. There were initial fears that Dembele could be missing for up to three-and-a-half months, but he now appears to be on target to return before the end of the year.Last week Spanish newspaper Marca claimed that the first La Liga Clasico of the season - against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on December 23 - was a potential comeback date for the France star. And a video posted by Barca to Twitter on Thursday did little to dispel hopes of an early return for Dembele, who became the second most expensive player in history when he put pen to paper at the Nou Camp in August. The clip shows the former Rennes youngster going through a light jog at the club's training base as a member of staff watches on.In an accompanying article on their official site, Barcelona add that Dembele is 'well on the way to making a full recovery'.Dembele was making only his third appearance in a Barca shirt when he injured his hamstring in a 2-1 victory away at Getafe in mid-September.His debut came as a 68th minute substitute against Espanyol a week earlier and he marked it with an assist in a convincing 5-0 win.Shortly after being injured, Dembele claimed he would 'be back in two months' in an Instagram post, which would make his comeback only a couple of weeks away. Breaking News - Blackpool put up for sale by owners the Oyston family

08:09
Sky Bet League One club Blackpool have been put up for sale by the Oyston family. The Seasiders confirmed the decision in a statement on Friday afternoon, which follows a High Court ruling against the Oyston family, who were ordered to pay £31.27million to former club president Valeri Belokon.VB Football Assets, the company of millionaire businessman Belokon, a minor shareholder in Blackpool, brought legal action against the Oystons and their companies alleging they had shown unfair prejudice against shareholders.Lawyers for VB Football complained that both Mr Belokon and his nominated directors were excluded from key decisions, information and share of profits.Owen Oyston, Blackpool's majority shareholder, and his son Karl, the club's chairman, denied the accusations during a lengthy civil trial in London earlier this year before Mr Justice Marcus Smith, who announced his decision on the dispute on Monday. After further discussion in court the judge ruled that a 'financial buy-out' was the appropriate course following his findings, and that an initial £10m should be paid within 28 days.Blackpool's club statement confirmed the Oystons, who were refused permission to appeal by the High Court, were to apply directly to the Court of Appeal in order to further argue their case. The League One side are now seeking 'expressions of interest' made to an independent nominee, which represents the first step towards eventual change of ownership at Bloomfield Road.A club statement issued on Friday afternoon read: 'The directors of Blackpool Football Club and Blackpool Football Club Properties are now in a position, following the conclusion of litigation, to market for sale Blackpool Football Club Limited and Blackpool Football Club Properties Limited.'Substantial, external, non-football revenue is a major component of the properties business.'Following the recent High Court judgement, legal counsel for the respondents have been instructed to apply for leave to appeal elements of the judgement with immediate effect.'In the interim period, as throughout the litigation process, the focus of the football club's board remains on supporting the manager and continuing to negate the impact of off-field issues.'Blackpool were a Premier League side in 2010-11 before dropping down the divisions. However, Gary Bowyer's team won promotion back to League One last season after victory in the play-off final at Wembley, where many Seasiders supporters decided to continue their boycott. The Blackpool Supporters' Trust has long called for a change of ownership and chair Christine Seddon welcomed Friday's news.'I really do feel overwhelmed. I have never doubted that this day would come, I just didn't know when,' she said, quoted by the Blackpool Gazette.'We are very confident that there are decent people out there that will buy this club. It's like Christmas and birthdays all come early at once.'1988: Owen Oyston buys Blackpool, then in the third tier, for £1 to save it from going bankrupt. 1990: Oyston promises to build a £60million 'soccer city' to replace Blackpool' s dilapidated stadium at Bloomfield Road. 1996: Oyston is found guilty of rape and jailed for six years. His wife, Vicki, starts running the club. 1999: Karl Oyston, Vicki and Owen's son, takes charge of the club amid fan protests over Vicki's chairmanship. 2000: Grants from the Football League kick-start work on Bloomfield Road at last. 2006: Valeri Belokon buys a 20 per cent stake in Blackpool, investing i1

✅ Breaking News - Phil Jones suffers friction burn FOREHEAD after faceplanting turf

✅ Breaking News - Phil Jones suffers friction burn FOREHEAD after faceplanting turf #Phil, #Jones, #suffers, #friction, #burn, #FOREHEAD, #faceplanting, #Old, #Trafford, #turf Phil Jones added another remarkable incident to his impressive collection of on-field calamities after suffering a friction burn in Manchester United's 2-0 FA Cup win over Reading. The defender received the injury to his forehead when challenging the Royals' striker Danny Loader, which sent him crashing head-first into the turf. A red mark and long gash were visible on Jones' forehead in the aftermath of the match as the Man United squad prepared to fly to Dubai for a warm weather camp. Despite Jones' scrape, the Old Trafford club produced an efficient display to see off their Championship opponents and reach the FA Cup fourth round. A Juan Mata penalty - awarded after a long delay to check using VAR - and a Romelu Lukaku strike were enough to seal victory. Jones was part of the Manchester United squad that won the 2016 FA Cup, although he conceded the penalty that Eden Hazard converted to win the 2018 final. It is far from the first time Jones' on-pitch antics have gained him attention, as his career seems littered with a spate of bizarre incidents. Against Arsenal in May 2015, Jones lost his footing when racing Olivier Giroud to a loose ball. As he stumbled to the ground, the centre-back somehow used his head to knock the ball off Giroud's shins and out of play. He was also left in an unflattering position by Derby's Jaden Bogle in a League Cup tie earlier this season. Teammate Juan Mata even mocked Jones after he tripped over some astroturf on the side of the pitch in a match against West Ham. ✅ Breaking News - Ex-South Africa star Naka Drotske stable after being shot THREE times

✅ Breaking News - Ex-South Africa star Naka Drotske stable after being shot THREE times #Ex, #South, #Africa, #hooker, #Naka, #Drotske, #stable, #shot, #THREE, #times, #bank, #robbery World Cup-winning hooker Naka Drotske is said to be in a stable condition after the former South Africa international was shot three times during an attempted robbery in Pretoria on Thursday. Local media reported that the former Cheetahs player and coach had lost almost a third of his blood in the incident, was in intensive care at the city's Montana Hospital, but was out of immediate danger. Drotske's family and former Springbok team-mate, prop Os du Randt, had been socializing on a smallholding on the outskirts of Pretoria when three armed men attempted to rob them, according to reports. 'From what we hear he is stable and they think it is OK,' Cheetahs Rugby CEO Harold Verster said of Drotske to Sport24. Verster later told radio station OFM: 'The news was absolutely shocking. This morning we got together as Cheetahs family and we had the team together and said that we were thinking about Naka and Os and their families. 'We wish them all the best and our thoughts are with them.' While Verster was unsure on the full details, he did attempt to shed some more light on the harrowing incident. 'What I do know is that numerous robbers entered the house while they were busy eating and sprayed them with pepper spray,' Verster added. 'A fight ensued and it went out onto the veranda or lawn, and when one of them drew a firearm to fend them off, Naka was shot. After that, they ran away.' The 47-year-old 1995 World Cup winner was shot in a tussle with one of the assailants, while Du Randt escaped harm. Drotske underwent surgery immediately upon arrival at the hospital and will require a further operation on an injured arm. No arrests had yet been made, police captain Kay Makhubele told reporters. Drotske played 26 times for South Africa from 1993-99 and was part of the squad that lifted the World Cup on home soil, though he only featured in one game against Samoa. He was the starting hooker for the 1999 tournament in which the Springboks lost to Australia in the semi-finals but beat New Zealand to finish third. He later spent three years with London Irish and was coach of South African Super Rugby side the Cheetahs from 2007-15. De Jong is one of the most sought-after talents in world football and Mbappe was left impressed after going up against him on international duty recently. 'He is a player who really impressed me during our two matches with the Netherlands,' he told France Football. 'His vision and the quality of his passing that breaks the lines make him very valuable, especially because he also intercepts a considerable amount of balls. 'Honestly, he is very welcome in Paris! I said to him as much, because he would be enormous for us. After that, he will make his own choice.' De Jong has scored twice in 22 appearances in all competitions this season and has played in all 10 of Ajax's Champions League matches over qualifying and the group stage. Barcelona are said to be leading the chase for the 21-year-old and recent reports in Spain claimed Ajax had set a price of £66million to lure him away from Amsterdam. PSG will be looking to bolster their options in midfield due to the impending departure of Adrien Rabiot. The Frenchman has decided against signing a new deal at Parc des Princes and looks set for a move away next summer. Breaking News - Rory McIlroy and Co prank captain Thomas Bjorn ahead of Ryder Cup

02:16
Rory McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Tommy Fleetwood and Henrik Stenson have pulled a hilarious prank on Team Europe's captain Thomas Bjorn ahead of this year's Ryder Cup. The four stars met up in Pennsylvania and filmed themselves pranking Bjorn over the phone as they drove to the Aronimink course to compete in the BMW Championships. McIlroy assumed the role of principal mischief and tried to convince Bjorn to spend £20,000 on a cryotherapy chamber after claiming he and Fleetwood had shot a round of 62 after using one recently. Bjorn, to their surprise, needed little convincing, telling McIlroy: 'Absolutely. Let me see what I can do. I'm with you there, anything that can help.' The four Ryder Cup stars chuckled, but their shenanigans were not quite finished. McIlroy, who will be playing in his fifth consecutive Ryder Cup this year, proceeded to ask if it would be possible for every player to have their own chamber. There was pause at that moment. McIlroy and Co held their breath and leant forward waiting for Bjorn's response. Perhaps the Ryder Cup captain had cottoned on this time and realised that some devilry was afoot? No, of course he hadn't. Bjorn agreed he would speak to the relevant people again, which left the four golfers almost in tears. Poulter quickly suggested to tell Bjorn the chambers - which are designed to boost recovery and improve fitness - can also help weight loss. The Dane's response triggered the biggest laugh of the day. 'Oh, f***ing hell, you won't see me all week then,' he replied. Bjorn will lead Team Europe into the biennial tournament in France later this month with hopes of avenging the 2016 Ryder Cup defeat. Breaking News - Canadian businessman Michael Latifi becomes 10% shareholder in McLaren

02:01
Canadian businessman Michael Latifi, whose son Nicholas currently races in Formula Two and is Force India's reserve driver, has bought a stake of around 10 percent in the McLaren Group that includes the Formula One team. McLaren, announcing the move on Monday, said the £203million investment 'significantly strengthens the group's balance sheet and underpins its ambitious growth plans'. The Group includes the McLaren Automotive, McLaren Racing and McLaren Applied Technologies companies. The Group emphasised that there was no connection between the deal and the 22-year-old Latifi's racing career. Latifi said: 'I have been an admirer of the McLaren brand and its businesses for some time. 'McLaren is a unique organisation in automotive, racing and technology with exciting long-term growth prospects, which is why I have made this investment.' McLaren Group executive chairman Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa said: 'This injection of capital is a vote of confidence in our future strategy and the group remains as focused as ever in positioning for growth.' Breaking News - Chelsea deserved a penalty for Klose's foul on Willian

02:04
What a shambles. On Tuesday at Leicester I heaped praise on the video referee. After Wednesday's game I’m baffled. When Norwich defender Timm Klose brought down Willian in the box in extra time, I can understand Graham Scott not seeing any contact. I can understand him thinking the Chelsea forward dived – but that’s why we have the technology.Video referee Mike Jones should have said, ‘No, there’s contact, it’s a trip. It’s a penalty.’The video referee has said it is not clear and obvious. What is then? A rugby tackle? At the very least, Jones has to tell Scott to go to the video screen at the side of the pitch so he can see a replay for himself. There were also two red cards for Chelsea in extra time, and both were correct.Pedro’s two bookings for a dive and then a lunge were absolutely stonewall. As for Alvaro Morata, he was shown his first yellow for diving. There was a tiny bit of contact, but nowhere near enough for a penalty.  I would have given a goal kick but Scott is well within his rights to caution him for diving. The video referee cannot intervene unless he thinks it was a penalty, and it definitely was not. Scott was then correct to show the Spaniard a second yellow card for dissent. Morata was in Scott’s face, waving his arms all over the place. You can’t accept that. ✅ Breaking News - Solskjaer 'accused United stars of playing the way Mourinho wanted'

✅ Breaking News - Solskjaer 'accused United stars of playing the way Mourinho wanted' #Ole, #Gunnar, #Solskjaer, #accused, #Man, #United, #playing, #way, #Jose, #Mourinho, #wanted, #Wolves, #defeat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has accused his Manchester United stars of reverting back to the way Jose Mourinho wanted them to play following their shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Wolves. The Norwegian boss channeled his inner-Sir Alex Ferguson and gave his own version of the hair-dryer treatment following the 2-1 defeat at Molineux.According to The Sun, Solskjaer lamented their slow build-up play in the changing rooms after the game before telling his squad to analyse their own performances during the international break. Share this article Share Following the result on Saturday, Solskjaer admitted that United had taken 'a big step backwards' after he suffered his second defeat in a row as the club's interim manager.Despite still being in the Champions League, Solskjaer saw the FA Cup as United's best chance of winning some silverware this season.'It was a big step backwards,' said the 46-year-old after the game, who suffered his first Premier League defeat at Arsenal last weekend.'That's the poorest performance since I've come here. We know that we played well against Arsenal last week and didn't get what we deserved, but we got what we deserved today.'The tempo wasn't high enough and we played into their hands. We never managed to put their keeper or defenders under pressure. There wasn't enough quality.' Asked if the positive impact of his arrival three months ago might be wearing off, Solskjaer replied: 'I think it's something natural. You can't perform to the top level every time.'It was still against a good team, don't forget that. Don't take anything away from Wolves' performance, even though we underperformed.'We're very disappointing tonight [Saturday] that we're not in the semis. I told the players the truth but, of course, you can't sit down and sulk too long. Everyone is disappointed but we have to move forward.'Solskjaer admitted the international break might have come at a good time for United, but vowed that his players would be ready to challenge for a top-four place in the Premier League and face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals when they come back.'The international break sometimes comes in handy,' he said. 'We would have loved to play again and put it right, but hopefully some of them will have good experiences with the national team and be ready to push again.'We're ready to go again after internationals, we've got so much to play for. We're in a great position in the league and in Champions League. Man United always find their good form in April and May.'We can't wait for the challenge for third and, of course, the big night when Barcelona come. There are so many highlights to look forward to. Don't worry about the players' attitude. When they come back they'll give it a good go.' ✅ Breaking News - MATCH OF THEIR DAY: Trevor Hebberd

✅ Breaking News - MATCH OF THEIR DAY: Trevor Hebberd #MATCH, #DAY, #Trevor, #Hebberd, #Jim, #Smith, #deserved, #win, #cup, #final, #just, #not, #today In February 1984, Oxford United lost 2-1 at Millwall in front of 5,000 supporters. They were fourth in the old Third Division. In April 1986, Oxford United won the League Cup final at Wembley against Queens Park Rangers in front of 90,000. They did so as a top-tier club. Under Jim Smith as manager, the dramatic rise of Oxford United was one of the football stories of the 1980s. Trevor Hebberd was one of five Oxford players who appeared in both of those games. Hebberd did not score at Millwall, but he got the first in the 3-0 victory over QPR. It remains Oxford United’s greatest day. ‘We went from the Third Division to the First Division in two seasons, both times as champions,’ Hebberd says. ‘We were a good side.’ They may not have looked it that day at Millwall, but Smith was gradually piecing together a team that could not just win back-to-back promotions, but which could hold its own in the top flight. All this at the 14,500-capacity Manor Ground, where, in 1982, the press baron Robert Maxwell took over amid a potential bankruptcy. ‘They were two big characters,’ Hebberd says of Maxwell and Smith. ‘Robert Maxwell was the centre of attention, overpowering, a big man physically. Dominant, that’s the word. He owned the club and could do what he wanted. ‘Jim Smith was a brilliant character. Even coach journeys were events with him. If we got beat, he would go mad. But by the time we got home and we’d had a few drinks, you’d have thought we’d won. That was the best period of my career.’ Born near Winchester, Hebberd joined Southampton around his 15th birthday. He made his debut in 1977, aged 18, as a substitute for Peter Osgood. A rangy, attacking midfielder, Hebberd scored his first senior goal a month later. The Saints were in the Second Division but were promoted in 1978 and established themselves in the First Division. By 1979-80 Hebberd was a regular in Lawrie McMenemy’s team which came eighth. He scored the first in a memorable 3-2 victory over Liverpool at The Dell. But by 1981, Hebberd was out on loan at Bolton, then Leicester, where he played alongside Gary Lineker. And when in March 1982, Southampton signed Mark Wright and Keith Cassells from Oxford, Hebberd was sent in the opposite direction. ‘I wasn’t getting in the side at Southampton and I was frustrated,’ he says. ‘I’d played quite a few first-team games, then came loans at Bolton and Leicester. I loved it at Southampton, but I blossomed at Oxford.’ Oxford began to climb and Smith added to his core with shrewd signings such as Ray Houghton from Fulham and John Aldridge from Newport County. The League Cup run began with an aggregate victory over Northampton, then a 3-1 win over Newcastle, featuring a teenage Paul Gascoigne. Hebberd scored: ‘I can’t remember that,’ he says. Norwich then Portsmouth were also beaten 3-1, setting up a two-legged semi-final with Aston Villa. Oxford prevailed over their illustrious opponents. At the same time QPR were stunning Liverpool in the Source:https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6427531/MATCH-DAY-Trevor-Hebberd-Jim-Smith-deserved-win-cup-final-just-not-today.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ito=1490&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - Joe Cokanasiga: The 17st wing who’s only 19!

08:18
Meet Ratu Josateki Tuivanuavou Waqanivalu Cokanasiga — most people call him Big Joe. His name translates as: Chief Joe, King of the new place, the warship with spears of the sun.All rather intimidating when matched to an enormous man. Cokanasiga pushes 6ft 4in tall and weighs 17st 9lb and the London Irish Exile is a winger, and 19 years old.He has a handy guide for commentators.‘The C becomes a TH in Fijian.‘If you are from a chiefly descent you can be called Ratu. My granddad was a chief and I was named after him, so I got the Ratu name.‘And Waqanivalu is our old family surname from cannibal times – but considered too aggressive to be used these days!’Cokanasiga may have been born in Suva, but all this is delivered from the gentle giant in a well-spoken, soft southern English accent – his upbringing is decidedly British. That is because father, Ilaitia, served in the Army’s Royal Logistic Corps. That job meant the family left the Pacific islands when Joe was three.Joe, sister Missy, seven years older, and brother Philip, three years younger, upped sticks to live in Mill Hill, then Abingdon, before moving to Monchengladbach as Cokanasiga approached his teens. By 14 Brunei was home.‘I was too young to remember Fiji,’ he adds.‘I used to run around shirtless apparently! My best childhood memories are from Germany. I loved it there.‘There was a big campus at General Headquarters. Every army base has a NAAFI (Navy, Army, Air Force Institutes) with English shops, so there is an Army Tescos! It kind of felt like living in England.‘I joined the football club and played centre back. Once we played Monchengladbach girls and I scored from the half-way line – I was meant to be clearing it but it went in!‘Surprisingly my passion for rugby started in Brunei. My dad played for the Army out there, I watched him before joining in. Then we played together for the club on the weekend in the centres.‘I let him do all the hard work and took the glory! He played very direct, loved running straight at people one-on-one.‘He would make a line-break then offload to me and mum would be on the sideline shouting at my dad to protect me.’These days sister Missy works for the Fiji High Commission in London, and Philip is a budding rugby player.Joe is the self-confessed ‘mummy’s boy’ who only started to love the game watching the 2013 Lions series as a 15-year-old.‘I saw George North pick up Israel Folau and after that I wanted to take it more seriously,’ he says.Fast-forward four years and Cokanasiga was touring Argentina with Eddie Jones and England. After moving back to Blighty he was picked up by Billy Clark, the former London Irish academy manager, just a couple of years ago.‘As soon as he saw my thighs he said: “yeah!”. I didn’t know whether to take that as a compliment or not!’ Cokanasiga laughs.Last season in the Championship he stunned London Scottish on his debut, scoring an outrageous try from his own 22, powering past a hapless defence carrying the ball in one hand above his head. After that he was part of the Six Nations Grand Slam-winning U20 national team but being picked in a senior England squad was beyond his wildest dreams.‘I thought there was no way I was going to go because I was in the Championship and had not played well enough to get a spot,’ he recalls.‘A couple of months before the announcement I was getting a haircut with the boys and got an email saying “England Rugby: Confidential” and I thought – what is this?‘It was from Eddie Jones saying 1

Share this article Share The British team said in a statement at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Friday that Head was 'currently offering some support to our engineering team on a short-term consultancy basis'.A spokeswoman said he had started this week at the Grove factory.Williams, the third most successful team in Formula One history with nine constructors' crowns and 114 grand prix wins, have not won a race since 2012.They face an uphill struggle with a car that was 3.8 seconds slower than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in first practice in Bahrain. The car was also late to be finished, missing the first two days of pre-season testing, and spare parts are in short supply although deputy principal Claire Williams, daughter of Frank, played down concerns expressed by Polish driver Robert Kubica.Kubica had said on Thursday that he would have to play safe on track to avoid any damage.'Inevitably we've got a little bit of a backlog from not having got the car out when we needed to in testing but everyone's worked really hard at the factory to make sure we've got the spares we need,' Williams told Sky Sports television.'We've got spares for all the parts that we need. We've just got to make sure that the drivers don't do anything on track to jeopardise that,' she added.'I think a lot of teams at this time of year anyway are in a similar kind of position, clearly we didn't help ourselves but it's not anything that I'm overly concerned about.'British rookie George Russell, last year's Formula Two champion and Kubica's team mate, said in Australia that the car had a 'fundamental problem' that would take months to fix. Breaking News - Wilfried Zaha scores against Fulham to equal Crystal Palace record

01:55
After scoring Crystal Palace's second in their opening-day London derby win over Fulham, Wilfried Zaha equalled the Eagles' Premier League scoring record. The winger now has 23 goals, the same as former Palace striker Chris Armstrong whose record had stood for 23 years. Armstrong played for the club between 1992 and 1995, notching 45 league goals in total from 118 appearances. Zaha came through the youth system at Selhurst Park before joining Manchester United. After rejoining the Eagles in 2015, he has established himself as a key player and was linked heavily with a move away during the summer. Jeffrey Schlupp had scored his first for the club before Zaha sealed the win at Craven Cottage to start the season with a win. This is in stark contrast to last season, when Palace failed to scored in their opening seven games.
