The New Player’s Guide To Building a Sealed Constructed / Prerelease Magic: The Gathering Deck

Improve Your Magic: The Gathering Gameplay by learning all about Card Advantage here: https://youtu.be/yUnytR_VDng Learn all about Building Better Limited Mana Bases in Draft and Sealed here: https://youtu.be/4Lio7WqsoL4 Is it Worth It To Attend Prerelease: https://youtu.be/tQH6MI-46P0 What's it like at an MTG prerelease: https://youtu.be/zG39FZgc0ik Prepare For Prerelease: https://youtu.be/fnaBOlE8ico Tolarian Community College is brought to you by Card Kingdom! You can support The Professor just by checking out their store through this link: http://www.cardkingdom.com/TCC There are many different ways to play Magic: The Gathering. Sealed Constructed is the way used by prerelease events, some competitive tournaments, and a lot of casual play. If you want to go down to your local store and play in a prerelease, the format you will be playing is Sealed Constructed. So what is Sealed? In Sealed Constructed, players open 6 sealed booster packs of Magic: The Gathering and build a deck from those cards, that is, the six booster packs provide you with a pool of cards to choose from, and you will ultimately make a 40 card minimum deck from the options you have available after opening your booster packs. Since sealed constructed is the format of Magic prerelease, and also a great way to have casual games with friends, it is a good format for new players to learn and understand how best to build a deck for. Sometimes even experienced players may need help in the basics of sealed deck construction. This video will guide you through the process of building a sealed constructed deck for prerelease, launch, and other sealed events. This video is intended for beginners, if you are looking for more intermediate lessons, my own Tolarian Tutor series covers everything from Building Better Limited Mana Bases to Mana Curve and Card Advantage, and I will link both resources in this video’s description. He's got one of the best storytelling through game mechanics in all of Magic: he can bring things back from the dead, but only as hollow artifact shells, and they never last. Specifically he costs 1 and two red for a 2 / 3, and then for 2 and a red you can tap him to create an artifact token copy of a creature in your graveyard. It gains haste, but you sacrifice it at the end of turn. As the Commander of a mono-red deck, Feldon has a play style unlike any other, mono-red reanimator with artifact flair, which is a restriction that breeds creativity. Feldon lends himself to a simple plan with a lot of subtlety: fill our graveyard, reanimate sweet creatures, and squeeze every drop of value from them to batter our way to a win. Tolarian Tutor: Building Better Limited Mana Bases in Draft and Sealed for Magic: The Gathering

You can support The Professor just by checking out their store through this link: http://www.cardkingdom.com/TCC Our Professional Consultant is my own tutor, Emma Handy Twitter: @Em_TeeGee Our Script Supervisor is Michelle Rapp Twitter: @ninox_morpork You’ve finally built your deck after drafting three packs, crafting a cohesive and powerful combination of creatures and non-creature spells that will hopefully help you take down your pod during FNM. But no Magic player can exist on spells alone - you’re going to need to add lands to make a playable deck, but how many and what should you choose? This is the question we’re looking to answer in today’s Tolarian Tutor. When constructing your deck from either a Sealed pool or a draft, there are many different elements you’ll need to balance to become victorious. We’ll cover all of these in today’s session, including balancing multiple colors in a deck, good mana sources, how our mana curve affects our mana sources, what to do when splashing a color, and reexamining the color ratio theory we introduced in our Mana Curving and Land Base lesson. We’re not beginners anymore, but we’re not at the Pro Tour yet! This is for people who already play at Friday Night Magic but want to improve and get better. This is for intermediates, and this is Tolarian Tutor! First, we need to talk about balance. Building a deck is like putting together a recipe for cooking, part inspiration and part science. You’ll need to compare and evaluate different ingredients, like spices, sugar and salt in order to create a delicious dish. In Magic, you’ll be balancing spells and lands when making your deck to create a cohesive, game winning whole. This is particularly crucial in a Limited environment, where you’ll usually be playing a 40 card deck. With fewer cards, every card you draw will be crucial in making sure your strategy comes through. Though most Limited decks run 15 - 18 lands, we’ll be going over some of the broader elements you’ll need to keep in mind before focusing on specific recommendations. The different elements we’ll need to balance when considering our mana base are: Spells: Mana Curve, and Colors: How Many Are We Playing? Where Are They On Our Mana Curve? These parts need to come together harmoniously in your game plan. As we’ve been reiterating time and again, you always need to know what your deck is trying to do and how it’s going to win to be an effective Magic player. But it isn’t just designed as a game stalling, misery deck, rather, Zo-Zu can accelerate games to their conclusion quite quickly, and that conclusion can have the skilleed Zo-Zu pilot come out on top. But even if you do lose, your opponets will be so frustrated and so unhappy that their victories will be hollow as the modern format. Spendid, simply splendid.

Your local game store holds Magic: The Gathering events from Friday Night Magic to the Standard Showdown to other in store events throughout the week. For new and returning players, attending these events has often been difficult, as booster packs are designed with the draft format in mind and not constructed, thus buying tons of booster packs to crack in order to build a competitive Friday Night Magic standard deck has never been an easy, affordable or even successful strategy. The only alternative, however, has been downloading decklists and buying singles to build a complete deck from scratch. An expensive option considering Standard decks usually run in the hundreds of dollars, if not more. Challenger Decks seek to offer what has never before been done: a self-contained, preconstructed standard deck which can be bought at an affordable price and played effectively and competitively at Friday Night Magic or other in store events, right out of the box. At an MSRP of 29.99, these challenger decks would need to offer quite a lot to new and returning players interested in them. Do they rise to the challenge? Let’s take a look! Now, For The Record, Wizards has attempted products like this before, most notably with the long running product line of Event Decks. But, as my own reviews cover if you are curious on the details, Event Decks were almost always terrible right out of the box, technically playable at FNM but not something that put up much of, if any of a fight. A new or returning player using an event deck would likely end up in last place, and many times did not even have a framework from which to build a competitive deck. Event Decks were jank, containing 1-2 copies of largely unplayed cards, never mythics and never value. Now, one criticism many of my videos have had in the past is an over emphasis on the importance of financial value in products such as these. My answer to that is simple: when products of the past such as Event Decks were so terrible, so unplayable at an event, so failing in the very thing they were designed to do, then all there is left to look at is financial value. In the case of challenger decks, everyone is talking about financial value because these contain mythics, and playsets and playsets of mythics, but for me, i don’t care. I do not care one bit about whether the sum total of the individual cards within these 29.99 decks are worth 60, 80 or even 10 dollars each. I will still look at financial value, but what matters here is the degree to which these are playable out of the box at Friday Night Magic.

It’s a term that we hear thrown around in games of Magic, particularly during coverage at Pro Tours or other competitive level tournaments. Most of us have a general idea of what Card Advantage means, but it’s not always clear what the specifics are or when it’s appropriate to use the term. So instead we nod and smile and hope no one catches us out. Today, we’ll be putting an end to those moments of doubt by covering the major aspects of Card Advantage. We’ll be going over what Card Advantage means, what it isn’t, and when to use it. We’ll also be covering Card Advantage versus Board Advantage, and take a look at what slices of the color pie yield the most Card Advantage. We’re not n00bs anymore, but we’re not yet at the Pro Tour yet! This is for people who already play at Friday Night Magic but want to imrpove and get better. This is for intermediates, and this is Tolarian Tutor! Defining Card Advantage So what is Card Advantage? The best way we can define Card Advantage is: A game action that either generates more quantifiable benefits or resources to you than it costs, OR A game action that takes away more quantifiable resources from your opponents than it costs. Game actions in Magic are usually playing cards, which are your main resource in the game. Remember, Card Advantage is Resource Advantage in Magic, so when we evaluate cards to see if they can give you Card Advantage, you’ll need to ask yourself three questions: How many cards did this cost you? How many cards did this make your opponent lose? How many cards did this gain you? EXAMPLE 1: Let’s take a look at Divination. Divination is a sorcery that costs 2 and a Blue, and says: “Draw Two Cards”. So for the cost of one card - casting Divination - you gain two cards. This is what many players call a “Two For One”. You’ve basically come ahead by one card, which gives you more resources - therefore, more Card Advantage. EXAMPLE 2: You can also gain Card Advantage without having to draw cards. For example, say your opponent has a Sanguine Glorifier with the enchantment aura Mark of the Vampire attached to it. You’re able to kill it using an Impale, getting rid of two of their cards using a single card. Again, this is a “Two For One” situation, but instead of coming ahead by a card, you’ve pushed your opponent back and deprived them of two resources. EXAMPLE 3: Discard effects, like Mind Rot, also gain you Card Advantage by depriving your opponent of resources. For 2 and a Black, you force your opponent to discard two cards from their hand - cards that they could have used to establish board presence or hurt your resources. Again, this is a “Two for One”, and you’ve pulled ahead.

Once the star jewel of Wizards of the Coast, this years’ line has had a significant shakeup in both price and contents, begging the question more so than ever if if the now 40.00 price tag for this once perfect product is still worth, and if so, by how much? Is this price part of a plan for providing players with powerful commander cards, new and old, or just callously cashing in on a popular product? Now in open beta, Wizards is urging not only beta testers for finding bugs and stress testing, but also seems very open to communication about player wants and expectations. This video is my review and critique of the current beta program, examining what we have been given so far, and what direction the program appears to be headed in. It will be a critical review, exploring both positives and negatives about the Magic Arena Beta. This video is not sponsored nor in any way supported by Magic Arena or Wizards of the Coast, nor will it ever be. To do so would create an extreme conflict of interest. Thus, while you may disagree with my commentary on the game, know that my praise and my criticisms are my own, and in no way influenced by free coins, cards, etc. That being said, I feel there are three major categories to examine and critique: the software, meaning the the client itself and the user-interface experience. The game, what Magic Arena offers in regards to Magic The Gathering gameplay And the economy, what it costs to play, examining its Free 2 Play model and prize/reward structure. Please note: This review is of the open beta. Once the full version is released, I will post an updated review and link it at the top of this video’s description, so be sure to check for that if viewing in the future.

What is it about this deck that inspiration such devotion in its pilots? While not quite Tier 1, Merfolk is always on the cusp of breaking through in Modern, yet has been a consistent and reliable part of the meta since the formats very inception. What makes the deck so consistent and what methods and strategies can players use to pilot their lists for better results? This video is not a deck tech on Merfolk, but rather a deck lecture on fish. We’ll look not only at how to better understand effective piloting technique, but also examine how why mono blue builds are poised to do well with the unbanning of Jace, The Mind Sculptor and BloodBraid Elf, take a look at what advantages Simic has to offer us with key green merfolk from Ixalaln, and also explore how to build your own Modern Merfolk deck on a budget of less than $100. All this, as well as a special guest speaker, and a preview of key card for Merfolk that’s being reprinted in Masters 25, on the first of our Tolarian Deck Lecture series. The problem with Merfolk is that it is a very complicated deck. Merfolk is underestimated because of its complexity, and it demands a lot of experience to play properly. Merfolk has a very large decision tree, it’s not so one dimensional. You can play aggressive, you can play a tempo game, you can play controlling. There are many avenues to winning, either through unloading your hand, or playing just a few creatures while holding up counterspells, attacking your opponent’s mana, so there are many different ways of winning the game, but the win condition itself is very fragile! Unfortunately we have the worst win condition of all the Modern decks: we have to play creatures, we have to turn them sideways, and we have to connect with damage, and we have to repeat this process over and over again. The win condition is fragile because we have so many creatures, and if we lose too many creatures in the wrong way then we lose any hope of winning the game. Merfolk is one of the most fair decks in Modern. We are very honest, us Merfolk, but with the recent unbannings of Jace, The Mindsculptor and Bloodbraid Elf, our honest deck is going to be very well positioned. To explain how, I’ve invited Merfolk expert Jonathon Zaczek, much more widely known as Nikachu, to discuss how these bannings have affected Merfolk for the Better. Nikachu’s specialty is Merfolk, both in Modern and Legacy. In fact, his YouTube channel contains over 1,000 videos devoted to Merfolk. Last year, his expertise in fish took him all the way to the Pro Tour by way of placing second with Merfolk at GP Toronto, where he managed to defeat names such as Sam Black and Jon Stern, only to lose to Josh Utter-Letton in the finals.
MTG - Is it worth it to buy a Starter Cube for Magic: The Gathering?

Cube is quite possibly the apotheosis of Magic: The Gathering, the greatest expression of the game in the ultimate format. Unfortunately, Cube is also extremely expensive, with even non-Power cubes often costing in the high hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Now, Card Kingdom has released a Starter Cube, designed and refined by Magic pro and game designer Chris Van Meter, and priced at only $99. But is this a genuine cube experience of balanced yet powerful Magic gameplay, or just a strictly worse cube that can’t hold a candle to the real experience? Let’s take a look! But first, I quick word about this video. This channel is sponsored by the maker of this product, Card Kingdom, a Seattle based brick and mortar game store with a growing online presence, but my review of their product is just that: my own. Card Kingdom neither instructed me to make this review, nor have they even seen so much as a draft of the script for it. Although I am indeed sponsored by them I want to keep my evaluation open and honest as I would for any other review. And thus along those lines, I am posting the entire deck list for the Card Kingdom Starter Cube in this video’s description. You do not have to buy this product from card Kingdom, there is no mystery as to the cards contained within, and you may assemble the components yourself either from your own collection or other sellers as you see fit. I am reviewing the construction of this as a Starter Cube, in other words, I am analyzing and evaluating the CUBE itself and asking if this gameplay experience is worth $100, but the complete list is yours for free and you may do with it what you wish.

Well, we’re finally going to be discussing it in today’s episode of Tolarian Tutor, and hopefully start answering all of those questions you’ve been sending us. We’ll go into what a sideboard is, what it can do for you, what to put in it and when to use it. We’ll cover some common mistakes players make when sideboarding, and ways you can level up your sideboarding skills in both limited and constructed formats. This isn’t a beginning lesson in Magic: The Gathering, and this isn’t an advanced pro guide. This is for players who already know how to play, play regularly, and want to get better. This is Tolarian Tutor! We generally know that sideboards are cards that you can “sub in” to your main deck after the first game of a round, and are meant to help you better answer your opponent’s deck based on what you’ve seen so far. Sideboards are often treated as the “B-Team”, the cards you bring in when your “A-Team” just isn’t quite getting there, our second string as it were. However, a much more productive way of thinking about Sideboarding is using “The Elephant Method”, first introduced by Magic veteran Zuh-vee Mow--show--itz. To paraphrase, Zuh-vee advocates looking at your deck not as your “main board” versus your “sideboard”, but as a whole.

Well then have I got a deck for you! Pauper Elves. Pauper elves shares a great deal of cards and gameplay style and feel with its counterparts in Legacy and Modern, but unlike its counterparts in Legacy and Modern, it doesn’t share the high price tag. $700 for Modern elves? Ha. $2,185 for Legacy Elves? I take that same excellent gameplay experience but enjoy it with an eternal deck that only costs about 74.00, thanks. It’s pauper elves. Let’s take a look! Elves is a fun deck and rewards proper sequencing and practice. It is mutable, somewhat, with various other Elves taking slots at different points in metagame cycles. Presented here is a solid build for the elf lover in your playgroup. Do what is surprisingly difficult to do in the world of magic the gathering: play a deck of elves. I hope you’ll come play that deck or whichever deck you love with me at Mox Boarding House Seattle on March 24 for the Rags to Riches tournament. Mox Boarding House holds these events every month, so even if you can’t make it down to play with me on March 24, check the link in the description to see when the next Mox Boarding House Pauper rags to riches tournament is being held near you. Hope to see you in Seattle, playing pauper and making mad mana.

While being able to enjoy yourself and have fun will always be worth it in and of itself, it is still fair for players to evaluate the total bang for their buck that attending a prerelease event provides. This video will examine the current Ravnica prereleases, which included some noteworthy changes to their contents and overall value. Please Note: If you are looking for a general analysis of prerelease worth, you can view my original video on the subject here. Though made years ago, the recent changes to prerelease have ensured it is still completely accurate to today, so be sure to check that out. And if you are looking for a guide on what you do at prerelease, which is, construct a sealed deck from your prerelease kit, please see my video lesson here, which will tell you everything you need to know for properly and effectively building a prerelease deck. This video is evaluating the overall value on prerelease attendance for the current Ravnica sets, and comparing that value to previous prerelease events.
