He brought the woodblocks to create a print of Takashima Ohisa, the teahouse waitress, designed by Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1806) in the 1790s. Gallery visitors were amazed to witness Matsuzaki's deft touch as he applied seventeen colours with perfect alignment. Each colour was rubbed with the printers most precious tool, the baren. The final touch was a dusting of mica. Matsuzaki hails from Arakawa-ku in Tokyo and has been a printer since he was fifteen years old.

His paintings are gutsy, controversial and unforgettable. With painful beauty Bacon lays bare the struggles of the human condition. Surveying Francis Bacon's life and work, this is the first major exhibition in Australia of rare works by the master of post-war British art. With over 50 paintings -- including some of his well known triptychs -- the exhibition covers five decades of his career, from the pensive and shocking works of the 1940s to the exuberantly coloured and visceral large paintings of the 1970s and 80s. The works have been drawn from 37 collections including the Tate London, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Shown alongside the paintings is a wealth of archival material from his chaotic London studio, offering a fascinating insight into the artist and his creative process.

Aida Tomescu is a Sydney-based artist who has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally. She has won numerous prestigious art prizes, including the Sulman Prize, the Wynne Prize and the Dobell Prize. __________________________________________________ The Dobell Prize The annual Dobell Prize aimed to encourage excellence in drawing and draughtsmanship among Australian artists. Held annually from 1993 to 2012, it was initiated by the Art Gallery of NSW and the trustees of the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation (established from the estate of Australian artist William Dobell). What constitutes a drawing was deliberately not outlined in the conditions of entry. This flexible approach ensured a great variety of drawings were submitted, ranging from those made using materials traditionally associated with drawing (pencil, pen and ink, charcoal etc) to those that are part of contemporary practice (including pastel, watercolour and collage). Changes to the Dobell The Dobell Drawing Prize 2012 marked the final year of this competition. After 20 years, the Art Gallery of NSW and the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation confirmed a refreshed approach to the exhibition of contemporary Australian drawing at the Gallery with a new initiative -- the Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial -- to be launched in 2014.

'In an era of chaos came an explosion of creativity - edgy, provocative, yet utterly compelling.' __________________________________________________ The mad square modernity in German art 1910--37 Germany at the start of the 20th century was a country in turmoil. With the formation of the Weimar Republic, replacing the old imperial system, came a dramatic shift in thinking. In the new metropolis of Berlin and beyond, a period of intense creativity flourished amid chaos and revolution. Bold new movements such as Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, Bauhaus and New Objectivity exploded onto the turbulent social landscape. The artists' interest in experimentation extended across art forms, forging influential directions in painting, photography, design, decorative arts, film, theatre, street art and political satire. The mad square: modernity in German art 1910-37 brings together over 200 diverse works exploring the fascinating and complex ways in which artists sought to portray the modern world. Featuring leading artists such as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Hannah Höch and El Lissitzky among others, this major exhibition is drawn from renowned international and Australian collections. David is one of Australia's leading draughtsmen and portrait painters. He has exhibited widely in Australia and has won numerous prizes, including the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, the Mosman Art Prize and the Dobell Prize.
